Smokey fought me to come out of her condo this morning, so I left her home from school. She was acting fine all evening. I went out to the stores for about 3 hours after work and when I came back, all she’s done is lay down. Smokey is usually pretty energetic, especially if I shake her treats, or I give more hay, or when I give her her greens. But I got no reaction from her. She’s not laying in the new bed, either, she’s laying in the twig binkybunny house she has, which is on the bottom floor, in the back corner, where it’s kind of dark.
Other than that, I’ve seen slowly hop to the litter box, sit in it to use it, then lay down in it, which she NEVER does. She proceeded after awhile to hop back into the twig house. I left the door to her condo open and she didn’t even take that invitation. I took her out and she withdrew from me, which she NEVER does.
So I take her out of the cage and she just keeps trying to go back in. I close the door and then she wedges herself between the cage and the space of the exercise pen :

She wouldn’t get up. When she would, she would sniff the door, then wedge herself back into that space. I felt bad after awhile so I opened the condo door back up. She waited until I left the pen and then she slowly hopped back into the cage, and is now back in the binkybunny twig house.
I have never seen this type of behavior in Smokey before, and I am extremely worried. Does anyone have any advice? I mean, she didn’t run over for pellets OR greens :/
The first video is showing what she kept doing :

The second is of what she just did right now :

How much of a struggle did Smokey put up this morning? Could she have been injured and she could now be in some kind of pain? Sometimes discomfort will make a rabbit withdraw from being sociable.
Sorry, my connection is so bad, I won’t get those videos up quickly anytime soon. Hopefully an admin will be able to view them and give you better advice.
No she just ran away from me, I didn’t actually touch her this morning. And she was fine when I left at 6:30pm EST. When I came back at 10pm EST is when I noticed she’s not right.
She still hasn’t eaten and won’t move from the basket. I am so worried.
Edit : I gave her a bowl of water and she drank some of that. She went to her litter box, but still won’t eat. She then ran up her ramp and is now laying on top of the hay she has scattered about. I have no idea what is going on, she has never acted like this before.
Is she drinking at all? Exactly how long has it been since she last ate something? Will she not even take treats if offered?
She could be in GI stasis or have gas. Can you touch her at all and if so, can you see if her tummy feels bloated? Are there any gurgling noises?
She drank a tiny bit when I offered her a bowl full. She won’t take her favorite treats, which she never denies them. When she peed, it was tiny, but I’m not sure if she pooped. It seems like every time she turns to lick her side or something to clean, she freezes like it hurts or she can’t reach.
She ate at 6pm when I was here. All she has to eat is Timothy hay, I don’t give her the greens until later. She looks uncomfortable, but I don’t hear any gurgling noises. I tried to feel under her belly for bloating but she hopped away from me, proceeded to stretch, then go to the other side of her condo. She sat for a bit, but is now laying down.
Once I moved away from the cage, she went back to the other side and is laying on the hay again, which I find odd.
Does she look like she’s pressing her belly to the floor? Does she shift position often?
Also, do you have any simethicone drops for infants in the house? Good to have on hand if bunny gets gassy. There’s a good article on bunny tummy troubles here:
http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/ileus.html
How much did she eat at 6PM? It’s got to be about 1 AM where you are now, right?
She needs the vet asap. You want to give her some anti-gas like they use for babies (simethicone) as gas is often the culprit when rabbits present like that. You will need to syringe feed the simethicone to her. The fact that she drank is a good sign that she is not blocked internally but you need to find out if she is pooping. We call this condition GI stasis for which bunnies are very prone. It can be brought on by many things, and often resilves itself but not always without veterinary care.
I have been giving her Kale the past few days, could this be the culprit?
I woke up and she was biting the cage to get my attention. She wanted me to come pet her. She ate ALL of her greens ( I left them in there ) and she is back to hopping around taking treats and wanting me to pet her.
She had me in tears earlier, I thought she had sprained her foot or something, the way she kept backing into a corner. I am watching her now eat a couple of treats. Se ate a healthy amount of hay, her pellets and almost all her greens.
It’s GI Stasis like indigestion?
Thank you two for responding quickly, I was really panicking. I am still going to take her to the vet today, despite her now acting her normal self. Wish me luck : )
I’m very glad you’re still taking her to the vet today. Even if she’s doing better, there are several internal conditions that could be possible, and they can get more serious awfully fast. She’s already been in discomfort, so it’s likely that the vet will diagnose her, and give her the right treatment for a full recovery. I hope she continues to get better today. It can be scary. Thank goodness we now have so many vets that can treat bunnies.
{{{{{{{{{{{Healing vibes}}}}}}}}}}}}
The way she acted, and for so long, is why I’m still taking her to the vet today, despite her acting/feeling better. I have irritable bowel syndrome myself and I know how painful it is. When I was diagnosed, it made things a lot easier with medicines. I don’t want her to be in pain like I was. And I could tell she was in pain since I have never seen her like that since I’ve had her. : ( Hopefully the vet will give me what you talked about. Smokey is NOT going to like getting fed a syringe, but she’ll just have to deal. I want her healthy and happy!
I’m so glad to hear you feel this way about getting her treated. I wish more bunny slaves would take this approach. Sorry you have IBS, but it does seem to help when we can relate our own discomfort to theirs. You have a lucky bunny.
Syringe feeding tip: approach from the side of the mouth, not straight on. You kind of hold her in place firmly (on the floor is fine) and put the tip of the syringe into her mouth toward her back teeth from the right side or the left. Squeeze it in once she opens. If she won’t open at all, you can put a drop of banana on the tip to make it taste better. Ask your vet to flavor the meds too. Mine always had some apple flavoring they mixed with meds and Spockie never refused it. Keep us posted later today after you get back.
Both my rabbits lie in the litter box when they aren’t feeling well. I haven’t been able to see all the video but it looked like she was trying to relieve some discomfort. Maybe from gas?
Is she used to kale? Are you still transistioning her onto the new pellets? I really hope it’s not them causing a problem. She seemed to go on them so easily.
That article MimzMum linked is well worth printing off a copy to have on hand.
GI stasis is not really comparable to anything humans get, because their digestive system is so different from ours. It’s similar to any herbivore’s colic, like a horse’s. It’s basically trapped gas that brings everything to a halt and causes distension pain as well as allows toxins to build up inside the bunny. It is possible the kale is the origin in your case and to be safe I’d cancel kale from her list of allowed veggies.
That last time I gave her kale was about 6 months ago. She’s been just hay and lettuce. But when she started acting like this was more than 24 hours after that last time I gave her some, so I’m not sure. She is mostly transitioned over to the new pellets and has been on them for more than a week now I believe and has had no problems.
Right now she is eating Timothy hay like it’s going out of style. She’s been pooping and peeing and has drank water, so when I take her to the vet tonight and she’s acting her normal self, they’re going to look at me like I’m crazy. But I’d rather be safe than sorry, you know? If there’s something wrong, I’d rather know sooner than later : )
Her vet appointment is at 6pm EST, so when I come back I’ll be sure to update on what her vet says.
Just got back from the vet.
Of course Smokey had to seem like I was a liar because she was fine haha, but they did believe me. The vet said she’s had this happen with 2 other rabbits before, and that since Smokey is going through a big shed right now, the combination of the hair plus the kale may have given her the gas.
She did feel her belly really thoroughly and checked her teeth and she said there wasn’t a lot of gas and no lumps, which is good. Her teeth are perfect as are her gums. She said she’s a really healthy rabbit, so she’s not worried about it now. She DID give her 10cc of fluid under her skin since she didn’t eat/drink for that extended period of time last night into this morning.
She told me that if it happens again, they’ll give me some fruit-flavored medicine to give Smokey that will act as sort of a laxative to push everything out.
Smokey jumped around the livingroom for awhile and now she’s back in her condo, happily munching away on her hay and romaine, back to her normal self
Which is a HUGE relief to me!
So you can’t know what brought it on. That’s a pity! I have one rabbit who gets terrible gas from sweet apple so I cut those out completely.
No because she said since she was eating/peeing/pooping normally again, that she wasn’t going to order an x-ray. Had she still been the same way she was last night today, the vet said she would have immediately ordered an x-ray to see what was going on. They were both happy to just see her healthy and eating and whatnot, even though a nurse had to wrap her up and hold her so the vet could check her teeth, as Smokey fought her. My little 3 pounds bunny haha
But yeah, I’m just going to cut kale completely out of her greens and just stick to Romaine. I’ll go shopping soon and pick up some other greens she gave me a list of which are :
carrot tops, beet tops, dandelion greens + flowers, collard greens, escarole, romaine, parsley, clover, cabbage, broccoli + leaves, carrot, brussel sprouts, basil, peppermint leaves, raddichio, bok choy and spinach.
In the Spring/Summer months, Smokey LOVES dandelions. She can’t get enough of them. And her Pre-Kers pick them in the playground just to give them to her ( my school does no pesticides, no worries! ). But as it’s winter now, there are none around
I’m just hoping that if I buy her something from this list, she’ll eat it! And now I’m always going to worry about her getting gas again ![]()
Smokey is going through a shed right now?
Has she ever had oat hay? I recommend it.. I’ve been giving it to my bunny because she has been shedding like mad. Lol. I highly recommend it for shedding bunnies. I mix it with orchard and meadow. Here is what oat looks like:
It helps push hair through the stomach. Rabbits will ingest their hair.. and they can’t throw up hair balls
hence the stringy poops!
I think kale is one of the veggies that has a high oxalic acid content, and probably too much vitamin A for bunnies to have it more than once a week at most. I stopped feeding it to mine because it seemed to upset their stomachs too much. Red leaf lettuce is a no-no for mine as well. And iceberg lettuce of any kind is not good for anybun. I also found my mini-rex cannot eat romaine lettuce. Something about it makes him extremely gassy. I rushed him to the vet one night due to how uncomfortable it made him. Taking your rabbit’s sensitivities into account is a good thing.
(BTW, what breed of bunny is Smokey?)
I only feed dandelions from my home yard that I can see well from my window. We don’t use fertilizers or pesticides either, but a public area where dogs could come and wee/poo on the dandies can transmit disease to a bunny.
The best way to keep a rabbit’s tummy happy….hay, hay, and more hay! Be aware of it’s freshness and don’t feed any that appears moldy. It should be the staple of their diet. Some bunnies do well with greens every day, others need less.
One more thing, I found my bunnies had a lot less tummy trouble without pellets. If you can find a high quality one that’s mostly hay and little or no filler, that’s better, but there’s just something about them that slows my bunnies’ tummies way down. It was hard to wean them off them, but they’ve been a whole year without them and are just as happy.
Well, that was a lot of words…but, just wanted to finish by saying I am also glad that Smokey is well! ^_^ I was worried too! Good for you for being cautious and taking her in to see the vet! Give her a snuggle for me! ![]()
The vet said that kale is really high in calcium, too, so to give it to her sparingly. I’m just going to cut her off it entirely and try other things from the list. Maybe I’ll try carrots again, with the leafy tops. I’m hoping she’ll like them or something else on the list.
The playgrounds at my school are fenced in ![]()
The pellets I give her were recommended by users on here and she gets 1/8 cup a day, and that’s it. I’ve noticed she lost a little bit of the pudge, which is great. It’s a Timothy hay pellet. Oxbow T ![]()
I actually wanted to try to give her oat because of the great reviews it has. She LOVES orchard hay, as well. So I’m going to try to go to the store sometime tonight after work and pick some up, although I’m not sure if they carry oat. I’ll probably have to order it offline. That site Drs Foster & Smith is great and have great prices, so I might just be ordering from them ![]()
Smokey is a Netherland Dwarf who will be 2 years old on March 19th ![]()
And yeah, I’m really glad I took her, too. My vet also doubles as an animal hospital, so the vets there are very experienced and nice. The breeder I purchased Smokey from recommended the vet’s office to me, since she said they’re very experienced with rabbits. Plus if I didn’t take her, I would feel like a terrible pet owner. A couple people kept asking me why I was going to spend $40 to take her when she was acting fine, but I don’t think they understand that bun owners -know- their rabbits ( which is what my vet was saying, she was glad I brought her in, too ) and that when something isn’t right, the best thing is TO take them to the vet.
Oh well, it doesn’t matter what those nay-sayers say! I want my Smokey to always be the happy, healthy, curious, energetic bunny that she is ![]()
Thank you all for helping me out and caring, it really helped keep me calm while I had to wait to see the vet!
Edit : I just checked and Petsmart carries Oxbox oat AND orchard. So I’m in luck
There’s also one only 7 minutes away from me ![]()
Oh boo to the nay sayers
I hope she loves the oat! I fed my bunny oat when she was young, and she didn’t like it, but after I got a sample from the binkybunny store, she has loved it since!
Ever since I cut out the kale, Smokey has only gotten romaine and her timothy since and she’s been fine. She’s back to her normal self.
I haven’t gotten to run to get her some oat because all of the stores are closed. I’ll have to call Petsmart and HOPE they’re open D:
Yeah, it didn’t bother me that people were saying why bother taking her. The vet said she was glad I did and that she understood that bun owners know their bunnies and that when something is wrong, we can tell. Like moms and their kids. So at least you guys/girls and the vet were on my side : ) I’m just so happy she’s back to her old self!
Me too! Now, I can plot to steal her … *chuckles*
I haven’t tried kale. My bunny is awfully picky o_o Won’t eat carrots or mint. Just likes her normal romaine, cilantro and the occasional italian parsley. She dislikes parsley, but will eat italian parsley.
I think that petsmart is open. A friend of mine on facebook works at petsmart and mentioned that she is going into work today ![]()
Yeah I got into Petsmart and got her some oat hay, which she devoured!
Smokey HATES carrots. She turns her nose on them in the most disapproving manner and looks at me as if I’m giving her poop to eat! She loves kale, but she’ll just have to deal with having romaine for now until the grocery stores are open and I can get her some mint, which she likes, and maybe some parsley. I’ll have to see what they offer.
And you can’t steal her, she’s my love
Although are two buns would look awfully cute together!
HEhehe!!
Those nethies are so cute
They are so bossy for such small bunnies!
Oh, yes my rabbit has snubbed carrots many times. So, no carrots
She likes mint? It has a strong smell for my bunny, I think. She sniffs it, runs away or foot flicks. Strange, as cilantro has a strong odor to it and she gobbles it right up!
I’ve gotten Smokey mint timothy before and she liked it, but they stopped selling it, so I couldn’t buy anymore for her. My supermarket does offer mint (leaves and whatnot) so maybe I’ll pick some up and see if she takes to it like the minty hay.
Yeah, she’s awfully bossy for 3.1lbs, it’s quite a site to see. When the cats used to roam around with her, she used to boss the cats around hahaha
I’m so glad Smokey is all better! I think it was smart to bring her to the vet just in case.
Both of my bunnies have had one bout of gas each, and one has had a case of full GI stasis. They both acted differently, but they were noticably “off”. Nelli, my girl bunny, was flinging herself around and flopping contstantly, where my boy bunny, Bunbun, acted like Smokey and wanted nothing to do with me. Bunbun needed to be warmed up, since his ears were freezing and he was shivering, but other than that I just rubbed their bellies and stressed out. It was the middle of the night both times- of course. Both bunnies recovered from their gas within a couple hours. When BunBun got GI stasis, he started acting weird at about midnight and I knew it was serious when he still wasn’t better by the morning, so I rushed him to the vet.
I find it hard not to panic when my bunnies act sick- my first impulse is to grab them and zoom them to the emergency vet. But sometimes all they need is to be kept warm and get belly rubs and maybe some simethicone. My rule is if they don’t eat for over 3 hours- vet time. I’m definitely more cautious than many, but that’s OK. I still haven’t figured out what gave my bunnies gas, but I’m much more cautious about any new foods now. I have also cut out kale, collard greens and spinache, due to high calcium and oxalic acid content and potential to upset their tummies. Like Mizmum’s bunnies, mine have been on a pellet free diet since November due to BunBun’s bladder sludge. They’re doing fine with it- I just give them extra greens and I don’t think they missed it after the initial “where’s our pellet bowl??” shock wore off. Anyway, that’s awesome that Smokey’s recovered! And she even got a clean bill ofhealth from the vet- now you can really relax
.
Brittany, you cannot claim smokey, she’s been clamied already, since her fur grew in as a siamese sable, My girls have claimed her into their tribe.. ![]()
Yeah I’ve almost weened Smokey off pellets. It was really rough for her at first and she would get nasty and growl if she didn’t have a lot, but with extra hay and papaya now and then, she’s happy and more energetic.
MirBear, I don’t think I’ve seen your siamese sable girls!
But you can’t have her! She’s all mine! Her attitude, curiosity and all : D

Chacha does not discriminate colors and gender ![]()
neither do mine, they just ADORE bunnies of their colour
and smokeybunnyrobinson, i’ll upload a pic of each.
Hershey at 6 months:
:
Hershey now (almost 2) :
Twix at 6 months:

Twixy now (2 years 3 months) :
They look like Smokey’s twins! Except Smokey is much darker. She was those colorings when she was 6 months to a year. I’m sure if I had her outside a lot, her colors would lighten up, but we have so much snow and cold weather here in NJ right now.
But regardless, your bunnies are beautiful! Are they Nethies?
Hersheys a lionhead, and twix is an american rex mix (i dont know her breed, but from research this is my best guess)
they are alot darker than in the pics, but the siamese sablles continuously get darker throughout their life untill they either pass on or are 100% black. lol.
Lioneads are usually a lot fluffier than what Hershey is, aren’t they? They breeder I got Smokey from showed me Lionheads (which I originally was going to purchase) and they are really fluffy. They almost look like Netherland mixed with Americans, but I don’t know rabbit breeds that well. Their hair is the same as Smokey’s hair, so that’s what I mean.
She’s un maned, she had a flaw and doesnt have a mane, her brother and sister did though.
Maned or unmaned, she’s still beautiful : )
