So tomorrow Zeus is going on a 2 hour trip with me to my parents’ house.  He travels just fine, but it never fails, he always pees in the carrier.  Usually I just put a towel down in there, but he bunches it up and it just gets wet with the pee and then he has to sit on a wet towel.

I’m thinking this time of lining his carrier with Care Fresh bedding.  It’s not dusty, cushiony, and will absorb the pee.  Is this ok?  Is there anything I should consider with this?

I tried that once, and it just made a mess. It got everywhere when I took Monkey out of hte carrier when we got where we were going

I put a litter box in my bunnies’ carriers when traveling even on a short trip to the vet, but I notice it slips and slides around a lot and then sometimes get crunched up between the carrier wall and the box, so I might just try the litter only approach when my 3 all go in tomorrow.
The Carefresh sounds like a good idea to me. You may find some of it comes out the barred open end, but perhaps you can put something up against it on the outside to keep it from getting everywhere. It’s better than having a wet and dirty bunny bummy when you arrive at your destination!

That should read, “Sometimes the BUNNIES get crunched up against the box and carrier side.” Sorry…just wrapped several gifts to go out and I’m in a Christmas present coma. >.<

We tried puppy Wee Wee pads. We keep a small package around. We placed a folded towel to fit the bottom of the carrier and folded a pad over it. Bumble does not move around much in the carrier even though he has room.

LOL…I’d use those, but Mimzy likes to eat them. 0_o

If Zeus isn’t a chewer though, that might be a good way to keep him comfortable, with less mess to clean afterwards.

I was going to suggest a litter pan that fits in the carrier, with some litter or hay or both in it. I still think, even if the pan slides a bit, it’s going to contain the bunny better than a carrier where they pee. That way, if you’re staying at your parents, you have the litter pan already with you to take out. I’d give it a try.

Otherwise, just wash the carrier out every time you arrive. Can’t tell you how many times my vet’s assistant had to give my carrier a bit of a rinse at the beginning of a visit. That’s why they’re all plastic I think!

I also put a lambswool pet bed into mine, which helped my bunny keep from sliding, was soft and comfy, and washable if necessary. She doesn’t pee in the carrier, and I once read that many animals actually hold their water if nervous and moving, so it may be OK.

I grab a ton of paper towels and fold them down to fit the carrier (my larger carrier is the exact same width as the paper towels, and pretty easy to get them the same length). Then, on top of that I’ll put a fleece blanket which seems to wick the pee away so they aren’t sitting directly on wet paper towels. If I have newspaper, I’ll put that under the paper towels too because I think it absorbs better, but I generally don’t have any newspaper around.

Otto used to pee in the carrier without fail and I had a bad experience when I didn’t put down enough absorbent material (the poor guy was trying to squeeze himself into 2sqin of space that wasn’t wet near the front of the carrier – we had to stop at a gas station, get all of the pee out (it was loose on the bottom of the carrier too, not even absorbed) and put down some fresh paper towel while keeping him from jumping out. Not fun, though we laugh about it now 🙂
