Not sure where to pos this but here it goes.

I am looking at adopting a Flemish Giant that is 5 months old for my wife who lost her rabbit a few months ago.  We are in WI and the bunny is in CT.  The shelter I have been in contact with said they will help me on their end if I can arrange the transportation.  Does anyone have any advice on animal transportaion services?  2,000 round trip isn’t something we can do right now and I think I’d probably spend more in gas!

        Thanks for any advice!

you might get lucky contacting the House Rabbit Society in your area. They can sometimes arrange a transport through their network of volunteers.

            Good idea petzy.
I know with our rescue group, we either have volunteer’s helping with a transportation ‘train’ to the new adopters, and some we have flewn to homes, though not usually far.

            Good luck.

Thanks. I’ll look into that. The shelter I want to adopt him from said she would not allow him to go on a plane because it is too stressful on them. So it would have to be train or driving.

Thanks for your help. I’ve been researching all day and it just doesn’t look like we can make it work.

Update: I gave up too soon. I just got an email from a local animal rescue transportation group. they don’t transfer that far but she knows other coordinators that have connections out there. She hoping someone will take our case and bring him out. Best of all, it’s completely volunteer!
The WHRS could help. He said it’s almost impossible to make those transports work. Hopefully we’ll be bringing our new little guy home soon!

I hope it works!! I was going to say-there is a trucker group called ‘truckers who care’ or soemthing like that-they’ll drive adopted animals to homes when they are able…or maybe check local.

Please keep us updated with pictures if you can!

Thanks! I did check out that group of truck drivers. They said rabbits are too sensitive and they wouldn’t move him for me. I may still have the truck driver option as her uncle is a trucker who live in NY. He said he doesn’t go there but he has some buddies that do and even go up to Milwaukee. I’m still waiting to her back from the Connecticut HRS to see if they can help. I’ll post again when I hear something. Merry Christmas everyone!

Good luck! It can take some time to set up transports and find the volunteers to help so don’t give up hope on this…just be patient.

Hi guys!  I just found out about this.  JerTop is actually my husband!  He is so awesome.  He actually did this because of a rabbit I’ve been drawn to, looking at it on petfinder and talking with the shelter about out of state adoptions.  I even asked him how he felt about a road trip!?!  lol  I don’t even like to be in the car.  Let alone for 2,000 miles.  I never imagined this might happen though!

Here’s his bio and a few pics.  Hopefully we’ll get some good news!

Boogie came into the rescue with his 4 other siblings who have found homes and his mother Tango.

Boogie is a big boy, he is around 7 pounds right now and will be around 10 or more pounds when full grown. He is around 5 months old. He is a good boy, very mellow and does well in any situation. Gets relaxed very easily. Would fit into any family very well. He is a lover not a fighter. He is fully litter box trained and neutered. He has a lot of energy for a large bunny and would like a home that will give him lots of out of cage time.

Boogie is an all white rabbit with a few grey specks and really pretty brown eyes. He would do well also with a spayed female friend.

Now I’m confused. I thought you didn’t want a rabbit right now? Have you talked to your husband about your feelings on this? I’m just wondering if this isn’t a good idea. The rabbit will have to go thru the stress of cross-country transport, and what if it’s still too much for you?  Is the issue really that Rhine was too much for you to handle, or was it just that you didn’t want Rhine?  If Rhine wasn’t the rabbit for you, that’s fine, but it seems like we’re getting very mixed signals from you.  I have the feeling that the time management, money, stress issues from last week were not miraculously resolved over the weekend.  So it’s got to be something else.  I’m just trying to understand what’s going on.  Maybe wait to do this big transport thing until after the holidays, or better yet, if you can somehow get out there and meet the rabbit and then make an informed decision and bring him back with you.

I am a firm believer that if this is what God wants for us it will work out and if it’s not the right thing I won’t have a way to get him here. I was very stressed out last week and venting out loud. Not always a good thing to do. Our money problems and time management problems were solved the next day which will alleviate the stress for me. My husband was able to quit his second job and will now be home every night and on the weekends instead of working 70+ hours and be making more money.
It’s not that I don’t want a rabbit and no Rhine wasn’t too much to handle. I know Rhine was not the rabbit I was going to adopt. I was able to get him adopted that night to a wonderful loving family. I made the decision that I did not want to foster anymore because I could not justify spending the extra money while my husband was working 2 jobs on an animal that was not ours. Rhine was a good boy and I did love him. He didn’t even go back to the shelter or to another home while waiting for his forever home. I think fostering just wasn’t for our family.

Oh I see. I must have missed that somewhere that the problems were temporary. I hope this does work out for everyone involved. If you can get this rabbit, you are committed to him no matter what, right? Even if he is Hugo’s exact opposite, which is possible.

I posted that about my husbands job at the same time I posted Rhine got adopted. I am not looking to replace Hugo. I know everybunny has their own personality. I have had a lot of conversations with the lady that runs the rescue. She thinks he is a very good fit for our family.

I have never once in my life given up on an animal I have owned or adopted. I took care of Hugo through all his sickness and my horse I only had for a year when I was 16 I was over $10,000 in debt because of vet bills before he passed away. I had my first rabbit for 8 years and he was a challenge through the whole thing. Such a little stinker but I loved him to pieces!

The other fosters I had that went back did so because that’s what the shelter thought was best for them. Not because I decided to. I worked very hard to find Rhine a good home so he would not go back to the shelter. I have a very big heart and jumped into fostering and found out it didn’t work for us.

Goodness, this Boogie (lol) sounds a bit like Binky Bunny’s Jack! Was your husband planning on this to be a surprise?

Rhine wasn’t too much to handle. I know Rhine was not the rabbit I was going to adopt.

This flemmie will be huge. He will need to be free-range so when you get him, you might like to pick up some NIC grids on your way to block off areas you don’t want him to mess with.

He is going to go through bunny puberty soon and will be destructive for that reason alone. A big rabbit like that can dig a hole into your carpet in a jiffy.

He is gorgeous. I can see that it will be easy to fall in love with him. Almost has Champagne d’Argent shadings. Wow.

–I have no prolem when someone says an animal they are fostering is not the one they want to adopt, but you never actually said that before until now.

(Honestly, though, do get the NIC grids and bunny-proof to the max!)

did I say to get NIC grids?

He is 5 months old, 7 lbs and has already been neutered. I have 2 boxes of nic grids that I also use to bunny proof everything! They think he’ll only be about 10 lbs when full grown. If that’s the case he’ll be smaller than Hugo was. Hugo was 13.
Jersey: Not a surprise like he gets here and I find out. lol. I wasn’t even considering asking him about it. He surprised me by helping me plan everything and get it started!
Like I said. If it’s meant to be we’ll be able to get him. If not, there will be another bunny for me some day. One thing I know is that I can not spend hundreds of dollars trying (the cost of ground transportation was over $500) and it would cost us close to $1,000 to drive there and get him although that would be ideal.
Thanks for all your input. I appreciate it all! =)
