My bun has not been well today, but she is doing much better this evening and eating well now.     I watched her litter pan often today and she was using the bathroom today some during her illness.   Late today, she passed a cluster of clear jelly looking stool pellets.    These were not the very small grape looking clusters.    These are larger …. like her stool pellet size.   I did not note any mucous …. just the clear jelly round things.    Can anyone tell me what this may indicate ?

By unwell do you mean she stopped eating and toileting?

This could be mucus from her stomach (enteritis) which happens when they have GI stasis. It’s good she has improved and is eating now but I think a vet check would be an idea to see she hasn’t any blocakges. Especially if you notice her declining again. They do have clear mucus around those grape-like cluster but not a lot. This does sound different to that. My rabbit after a stasis episode passed a “plug” of mucus then started to poop normally thank goodness. I hope yours will recover swiftly also.

Edit: sorry, i didn’t notice you had said this was not mucus….I’m really unsure. I think if she has been unwell and experiencing stasis like symptoms, your vet should really assess her.

            How is she today?
If she hasn’t returned to normal poos and eating after passing this (whatever it was) then I think you need to call the vet. It’s been a full day, and if it’s an illness she needs to be seen and treated. If it’s still there in her litter pan, scoop out the normal and the strange poos to bring as a sample for the vet. It could help her diagnose.

I typed a long explanation twice yesterday… but when I hit “submit” … I got an error application message and it erased my detailed explanation.   My third attempt, which is above, was brief.

(Sorry this is so long … but my last paragraph will explain why I want to list detail and get good advise.   Thank you for taking the time to read).

Below explains what I observed and did for Bonnie yesterday:

I sat and monitored Bonnie all afternoon instead of doing some Christmas things.   Once I noted she was ill … my life stops to care for her.  She is our baby.   She had stopped eating, but she was still dropping some stool pellets.    I noted she had not drank much of her water during the night. I got her in my arms and lay her on my chest & I massaged her … rubbing her belly and spine.    (Note:  nerves come from the spine and it also helps to rub the spine to help them ).   I lay in a recliner and cuddled and massaged her for 20 min. at a time.  She got so relaxed and lay down her head and seem to enjoy this so much.    She began to nibble some on Cilatra, but then stopped eating again.   She would stretch out and lay, but I noted she was moving her body in some unusual ways …. so I knew she was uncomfortable and I suspected gas.   Then she would move into a meatloaf position and close her eyes and stay like this for a long time.    I called my vet and they were closed.   Last weekend we had a midnight emergency with our Akita and I woke my vet.  He  sent me to a new Night and Weekend Emerg. Clinic in our area.  I was not impressed with the vet at this clinic.    I decided if Bonnie got worse …I would then take her to the Emerg. Clinic.  … but I felt my care at home at that time would be better for her so I continued to massage her and monitor her.

At 4pm, I gave Bonnie Mylicon.   I have never given this to her before.   From reading this forum in the past,  … I decided to buy a bottle and have just in case.    It seemed to help….. or all the massages and prayers helped too.   By 6pm she was eating and moving around much more.

This is when I checked her litter box again and noted the clear jelly like poop.    They are not the cecum … they are large just like her regular stool.     But they are in a cluster … I do  not see any mucous in the litter box.   The clear jelly like poop is sitting in a cluster.   I did scoop carefully from litter pan and had put in a container …… to show vet if we had to go.

By 7:30 pm  (yesterday)  Bonnie was back to normal.    This morning she is great and running around and eating

We have incurred a tremondous amount of vet bills on our Akita  in the last 4 months.  I really can not afford to take Bonnie to the vet right now just for a check if she is fine.   Of course if she was really sick again … I will take her.       I have two elderly parents that are both 87.  My dad has terminal cancer and my mother has been ill too.    I have spent a great deal helping them and my hubby has been out of work.   I will take Bonnie to the vet if these clear stools indicate a problem.     Can anyone advise ?

I’m sorry to hear about your dog. Its stressful when they aren’t well. On a positive note, it seems Bonnie is doing better. : ) I guess the main thing is she stops both eating and pooping then she’ll need attention.
The other thing that crossed my mind is whether it was parasite eggs…???? I’d be surprised if they looked that large though. I suppose you could check the contents you removed if you still have it.

It really sounded to me like she passed some mucus (the clear jelly) through the intestine which shaped it likeit does fecal matter. The stomach lining becomes inflammed and mucus forms . That she wasn’t passing fecal matter but was passing this jelly was why I suggested a possible blockage.  But perhaps it was a gut slow down that has now improved.   I am totally guessing though.

Has Bonnie had any stasis trouble before? Regular gas discomfort or anything like that? In very young rabbits, passing anything like this is serious and needs immediate attention. In adult rabbits, it’s more often because of some chronic GI issue.

Maybe you could post your question on the All Experts site? Personally, I think Dana Krempels, Mirella Brown and Lee Meyer all offer great advice.

Thank you Jersey Girl for the info and website.

My bun has been doing very well since my last post on this subject.   I am thinking the same that you are …. I suspect she had mucus in her stomach and it did form and shape into fecal matter. …. but I will still contact the dr’s and let them know what she passed to see if there is any concern.    And no….. the jelly like stools did not look like any parasite.   I often check her litter box when I take it outdoors to dump it … to look for parasites and I have never found anything.    I live in the country and have a garden and many flowers …. so I use their litter droppings around my trees and plants.

You asked …. has Bonnie had any stasis trouble before ? ….. yes, she has. … or at least I have thought so when she was sick a couple times before …. but she overcome it quickly in the past ….. always after I massage her spine.    This past time, is when she seemed  ill for over 7 hours.

I do not know her age.   I adopted her 3 yrs ago.   I was unable to get any info on her.    When I first brought Bonnie home … I knew nothing about caring for a house rabbit, but I began researching immediately after getting her.    She had mushy stool the first few weeks after I brought her home.    I then learned to change her pellets to a better brand and the mushy stool problem vanished.    I have learned she is very sensitive to different brand pellets and she can only handle Oxbow Basic T at this time.  Dry Oatmeal flakes make her sick too.

I give Bonnie less than 1/4 cup Oxbow pellets each evening.   She loves her pellets and goes crazy when she knows it is time to get them.    The night she got sick (last week)…. I gave her a little more of the Oxbow pellets than I do normally.    I am wondering if she has to be on a strict  limit now ?

In addition to her Oxbow pellets, she gets unlimited Timothy Hay and fresh greens daily.   I limit her on carrots, apples, etc.

I have another lop … she is a regular size rabbit with lop ears.   She can eat anything and NEVER gets sick.    Bonnie … my little sensitive girl, is a Dwarf Holland Lop.   Bonnie is also deaf.

I would take a stool sample and have it checked by your vet- some intestinal parasites are microscopic and can cause GI irritation which can produce mucus.  Intestinal parasites will not clear on their own.  So hopefully it is just something that cleared up on its own- but to be sure I would have a stool sample checked- it should not be very expensive and could prevent emergency costs.
