I heard some people leave an entire small bale with their rabbits, to always have ample supply of hay but I didn’t think it would work for me because my rabbits would climb the bale and ruin it quickly. It would be a waste. But I thought I’d keep one bale right in their pen, contained in a crate so that my refill job would be easy. I am just trying it out to see how well it will work, what the drawbacks are.

After three days I have to say I’m liking this bale set-up. It is super-easy now to refresh their rack. No more hay trackings through the house. The rabbits are also able to eat directly from the bale through the bars so that I never have to worry that they are out of hay.

Also an easier way to keep an eye on your supply. Less chance of nasties or mice moving in!

Yeah… mice crossed my mind when I wrangled the bale into the basement but it had been in my hay shed for a while with mousetraps around it so I think it is clean.
Mocha, I think you were supposed to move your hay supply into the garage LOL!

That looks really good! Not sure Mike would go for it, but I’m glad it’s working out well for you!!!

Very cool! What a great idea. I think anything that makes it easier to care for our rabbits is always good.

Yeah i did. I keep 1/4 bale of hay in the house and 1/4 a bale in the garage and it lasts my buns about a month!

                        Two Thumbs Up.

I’m all about easy, if there is something i can do to save time, I’m all over it LOL.
I’m starting to wonder if there is anytime that a rabbit isn’t inside the hay rack? LOL silly bunny. If mine could they would be too, Bo broke one I made for him buy sitting in it.

I am discovering a new focus in my rabbits’ habitat. I used to only consider the bunnies. But with the bale there, I am starting to think of me, how I can make it even easier for me. Since this is all in my basement, looks are secondary.

I put up a shelf for the cleaning supplies: litter strips, garbage bags, etc, and now all messy transfer happens inside the rabbit pen.

                          I am liking this!

Andi, I did see Neigey stick his head all the way into the haybale crate. He doesn’t fit with his body but it worried me so I blocked it off.

–blocked off from Neigey, he was the only one to fit his little head in between the bars.

I keep vinegar and cleaning cloth inside the rubbermaid container along with fresh litter material. The box contains their ‘treat’ hay that has clover, alfalfa and dandelion. This hay always made the biggest transfer mess.

That is lovely! ^_^ I couldn’t hire you to come up and make something like that for me, could I? And then please bring little Neigey with you, so I can meet him. (and maybe bun nap him…lol)

I agree about the hay, I used to think I had it under control here, but it’s everywhere. >_< I can't get out from under it. Somebody needs to invent a hay magnet…like the kind they use to move junk cars to be crushed. (Oh wait…there's already one…it's my clothes/bed/carpet/hair/etc.!)

This is my goal, to eventually have ONE place where bunnies and supplies go, with supplies neatly tucked out of the way of bunny teeth, and basically a self-serve buffet bar for their nomming pleasure.
And of course this means bonding. Which I will hope to do soon also. I really think the three of them will be happier if they can all be together and cared for/cleaned/left to play with each other…and I’ll be happier because it will be less work for me to clean one big habitat than three little ones.

you are so funny, MM. A hay magnet! I thought that’s what a bunny was… LOL. But you are on to something. A hay magnet could be the name of a very unique vacuum cleaner designed for rabbit keepers.
I wanted my pen to be like a room just for them and their stuff as I too was tired of the hay going everywhere no matter how hard I tried to keep it under control. I like your line “I used to think I had it under control” — sounds like an intro to Hay Managers Anonymous.
I think ‘hay’ and ‘control’ are mutually exclusive…
I really want you to try the bonding when you get a chance. You will enjoy the rabbits more.

I am actually looking forward to it in a way. Mimzy and Fiver both present to me as kind of lonely. And they seem to enjoy each other’s company when I would have Mimzy on the bed for cuddle time in the past. I was just fearful of the first time Fiver ever charged him and took a snap at him. A lot has changed since that first meeting.
It’s Pip who may be the difficult one. She has a very aloof personality and was always kind of possessive of Mimzy. Fiver is little more than an afterthought to her. She won’t even look at him when I have her on the bed next to his pen. I am not sure she will feel good about sharing her ‘husbun’ when we finally get them back together.
Plus I have concern that Pip will squish poor Fiver, she is bigger than him by more than half and likes to ‘crush hump’ her charges.
If one winds up the odd bun out, though, that leave me someone to play with.

                                Meh…sorry for the OT….
lol @ the Hay Managers Anonymous idea…I think there’d be quite a few ‘addicts’ here. I could make a mint if I could come up with the all-purpose hay picker-upper. ^_^
Your first comment about people giving an entire bale for their bunnies to munch reminded me of my old vet, who kept her rabbits in a (hopefully temperature controlled) conex in the back of the veterinary hospital property. She claimed she would just toss big bales in there for them to eat, and encouraged me to do something similar for Mimzy…said he needed a job to do, so what better work for a bun than to have it plow through a bale of hay? I had to ask her how much room she thought I had in my house?

Personally I thought it sad that she kept her bunnies like that. Can you imagine the mess? Dark all the time in there? Little human interaction… that I know of. And the poop alone would be legion! Just sad. One of the reasons I changed vets.
