I just bought the bunny’s Christmas presents and when i got home I found out the timothy hay cubes I bought had a date on them, It said oct. 26 2010. Can I still give them to them? We aren’t going to go back there until after Christmas. I hope they are still ok. they look fine.

I wouldn’t worry too much since it’s only been a month or so since then. Usually the dates for expiration of perishables are relatively kind to prevent lawsuits and such if food is spoiled; companies don’t like to take chances and put a fairly early date. I doubt it would be a problem if it’s just hay either way. What are the ingredients in the cubes?

If they look and smell okay, my guess is that they are fine. There isn’t anything that will really “go bad” in hay cubes, they might just not be the freshest available. Also, is the date a “use by” date, or a “sell by” date? That might make a difference. I’m not sure what brand you purchased. If you were really worried, you might want to call the store and tell them the situation, maybe they’d be willing to send you a new bag?

I am not sure about the date. it was just on a little white sticker on the back. thats why I didn’t notice it until i got home.

This may well be the packaging date but even if it is a use-by date, like Beka saiid, you’d know if the were bad. If they look fresh in color and are dry and sweet-smelling, there is nothing to be concerned with.

You can examine them for mold (white spots or patches). I think they are not that old and will be fine. I have some treats lasting in my home as long as that before I get around to opening the bags. They are dried and cooked, so don’t spoil that easily. I expect they go stale and lose their flavor first.

I gave them two hay cubes today and i put mocha’s by him on the hard floor and it kept moving every time he chewed it so he picked it up and ran over to his blanket! It was so cute!
