Just brought home a new little girl three days ago! 5-7 mos. old Netherlands dwarf girl, who had been returned to pet store by previous owners who moved to a no-pet apartment.  She seems like she’s adjusted pretty well to her new home…she loves dashing around and doing binkies everywhere, and is comfortable enough to flop down on her side when she’s tired out from all the fun.

However, there’s one thing that worried me a little…she doesn’t seem to be very affectionate or even tolerate being touched.  She approaches me easily for a few good sniffs when I get down on the floor with her, and doesn’t show any sign of being afraid of me, but immediately bolts when I begin to reach out a hand to touch her.  Funny thing is, when she’s in her cage, she doesn’t back away from my hand at all, and is very easily picked up and handled.  When I manage to get a few good strokes in, she even grinds her teeth (in pleasure, I hope!).  I’ve had experience with two dutch rabbits before, who would give me tongue baths if I laid down long enough and not at all shy about nudging me for petting, so now I’m really pining for some bunny love

I don’t know if her behavior is a product of her personality or a product of the new environment…though she hasn’t been here very long, she seems to be settling in just fine.  I know I can’t expect her to love me immediately, but I wish I could at least touch her. Anybody had luck with a similar situation?

It could just be her personality – plenty of us here have buns who don’t like pets even though we’ve had them for quite a while. I’m sure she is a bit out of her element in a new place, so she’ll open up the longer you have her (it can take bunnies as much as 6 months or a year to really open up), but she may never enjoy pets as much as your other rabbit.

Oh dear, you have the same exact breed and color of my baby

Well, you need to be patient. My rabbit wanted nothing to do with me. NOTHING. It took several months for her to calm down (after being spayed, and being in the same environment) and get used to me. Rabbits take longer to trust their humans. I thought mine would never warm up to me, now, she will willingly kiss me and accept pets.

Some rabbits aren’t very big kissers. Some are. Some like to be alone, some don’t.

They have A LOT of personality just like us

My netherland dwarf girl is also a Queen of No-Touchy. It’s just the way she is. She is content to climb all over me, as long as I don’t try to pet her. Some bunnies are just like that

Ditto Monkeybun, I think the no-touchy buns are the rule rather than the exception.
