› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Emergency Vet or Not? – Teeth Issues
I’m fairly sure Otto is having teeth issues, even though he hasn’t had them before. He’s been very grouchy since we got home from vacation a couple days ago, he seems to be only eating pellets (our friend who watched them for us confirmed that he went straight for the pellets, though he usually eats the lettuce first), and he takes treats very gingerly, then drops them and eats them piece by piece. He seems uncomfortable and spends most of his time in the Maze – tonight we had to coax him out with food and he ran back in as soon as the food ran out. Last night he was doing some binkies and seemed mostly ok, so the fact that he seems more uncomfortable today worries me.
My regular vet is closed tomorrow and I’m conflicted about what I should do. I could call any number of emergency clinics (my vet does emergency hours), or try to find an exotic vet open on Sundays (I’ve found one, but I would need to see if their exotic vet is in) – or I could wait until Monday and take him into his regular vet.
Thoughts? I feel awful that he’s probably suffering and seems uncomfortable. Of course, I’d rather he see his usual vet, who I trust very much, and pay non-emergency fees (especially for the teeth trimming, which my vet already charges $200 for). Then again, I feel like he should see a vet as soon as possible if he needs it, just because he’s my little guy and I don’t want him to suffer at all.
If he is still eating I think it would be ok to wait. If you can see the other exotic vet that is open Sunday, that seems the better option if you don’t want to wait. With emergency vets, you might end up frustrated if there isn’t a rabbit savvy vet on. If you do have to go that route, maybe ring ahead and find out.
What has he been like in the past when you’ve been away?
Most emergency vets are not going to do anything with the teeth so you are best to wait to see your regular vet. An emergency vet may help stabilize if needed but with the teeth, nothing.
I think if he is eating, regardless of what, and pooping normally, you can wait until tomorrow. Might want to take notes on what happened when. (You started to here with this post actually.) so the vet can know.
I am not surprised he binkied once home, and his eating may have changed due only to the change in routine. Like pellets smell normal to him, but the lettuce smelled like your friend’s hand or perfume or other pets so he avoided it. Possible?
If it seems painful to chew, you can grind up some pellets with water and make a slushie to syringe feed him, or put it in a low dish so he can lap it up. but that’s only if he clearly stops chewing totally. Be sure he has lots of hay so if it’s not his teeth he can keep his gut moving. Maybe a bit of hay will get a piece of lettuce unstuck from one of his teeth? bunnies are mysterious, and if it goes in and comes out the other end in a day, it’s probably not an emergency. I just hope he doesn’t have a painful toothache. Call your vet and leave a message if you can to make an appointment tomorrow morning.
You can also just show up when they open if he takes a turn for the worse.
Thanks for the input, guys!
DH fed them this morning and gave them just lettuce for the first 15 minutes and he seemed to be eating it ok, so hopefully he’s not as uncomfortable as he seemed last night.
Good to know that the emergency vet wouldn’t deal with teeth! My regular vet has an exotic only emergency number, so I know it would be an exotic vet on call, but you’re probably right that they wouldn’t be set up to do a procedure like that with no staff around. I sort of doubt the other place will be set up to see exotics today because their exotic vet is the head of the practice and he probably doesn’t want to work Sundays 😉 but I could call and see.
Usually he’s a good traveler and hasn’t had issues when we were gone, so I kind of doubt it’s that – our friend said that he was acting really quiet and wouldn’t come out of the cage and that he was only eating pellets for the most part, so it sounds like he was a little off then too. Usually it’s Hannah who gets nervous in new places while Otto acts like he’s always lived there. We bought brand new lettuce on Friday, so that didn’t come from our friend’s house either.
I think he’ll make it just fine until Monday since he’s eating (unfortunately I can’t take him until after work, unless it really seems like an emergency). I just hope he’s not miserable 🙁
I would consider dropping him off in the morning – if it’s teeth they’ll have to sedate him and stuff so they usually like to fit that in with their surgeries. I like doing drop offs because the vet can see them in between appts and surgeries and I feel they spend more time with them that way.
Unfortunately I can’t really do the drop off because the vet is a half hour from home, then an hour or so from work (and more during rush hour) 🙁 And I can’t show up late to work because I’ve been out for two weeks. I could probably leave around 4:00 though to get him there in time for a 5:30 appointment.
I hope everything went well at the vet with Otto. My BunBun gets weird about treats when he gets a bellyache or has urinary issues, bu obviously a tooth problem would do it too. They seem to eat different things when they’re not feeling well. It’s just so hard to figure out what’s wrong with them Rabbitpam said it perfectly- they are mysterious! Keep us posted on how he’s doing.
I agree- if he is eatng then you could wait to see regular vet. If an e-vet is not comfortable with rabbit dental procedures they will not go them. BUT if needed they can help you keep your bunny stable if needed- if not eating and drinking- like Critical Care, SQ fluids, etc.
So in your situation it sounds like you do not need to go to e-vet- but if the situation were different it could be necessary even if the vet cannot address the teeth issue- they can help with feeding, fluids and possibly pain control.
Update on Otto: he seemed much less grumpy last night and came out of his maze to run around, check out the Christmas tree, and lay in the middle of the floor like he usually does. In general he was just a much happier bun. Hopefully his grumpiness was more related to the change in schedule from our vacation.
He’s still eating well, though favoring the pellets. When he does eat greens he takes small bites and chews very thoroughly, instead of inhaling them in one long bite like he normally does. He also has issues taking pieces of papaya and his chewing seems labored. I still think he might have teeth issues, but they’re not as severe as it seemed on Saturday.
Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of options for the vet, so it looks like we might have to take him on Wednesday 🙁 There was a potential appointment time tomorrow at 5, but I would have to leave work almost at 3:00 to make it, so we’ll see how he looks tonight and tomorrow morning and whether he needs to go. I feel bad leaving so early when I just got back, but I might not have as much to catch up on tomorrow as I think. Either way, he and Hannah both need their yearly checkups, so we’ll go even if he seems ok.
Keep us update! As long as he’s eating he should be fine.
{{Otto}} Please let us know!
I can sympathize-vet hours just aren’t awesome for people who work the monday-friday
I often have to call my parents and tell them “Ok Noot is the gray one, the blue carrier is hanging on the bunny room gate. Take him to the vet and tell them I will be there at 530 to pay the bill and find out what is going on”. Any chance you have a friend or family member you could loan a key to and get them to take him to the vet for you?
You’re so lucky your parents live close by! Unfortunately all of our friends live near work (or half an hour north) while we live half an hour east of work in another state. We picked our town because I used to work in the state, but don’t anymore, and it’s just a pain now. The kicker is that the vet is at least half an hour *south* of our house (follow that?
) which puts it an hour+ away from work (at least home is in between so we can pick up the buns). There is a bunny vet 5min from our house, but I don’t really trust them for anything other than nail trims – the place I go is fantastic and has 4-5 exotic vets (they’re also bird specialists) but they’re just so far.
So yeah, nobody who could pick up the bunnies
It’s hard for us to take them other than a weekend just because it takes so long and there’s always a chance traffic will be bad. Can’t wait until we move near work and find another vet who isn’t so ridiculously far away!
Otto doesn’t have teeth issues afterall! Yay! I guess he was faking it all along 😛 Both bunnies got the ok from the vet and are looking healthy. Hannah didn’t seem to mind being up on the table and being petted – she hates being picked up, but as long as someone is petting her she’s ok. Otto was awful though and kept trying to swan dive off the table and onto the window ledge. lol I thought he’d be good since he’s fairly easy to pick up, but he didn’t feel like standing still at all.
Glad all is well with Otto! Faker, just wanted attention :~) That’s okay, your happy to give him attention!
I’m glad he’s okay and nothing is wrong. Swan dives off the table huh? That sounds like Otto alright!
Yeah, sounds like Otto – not very bright! At least he was diving towards the window ledge on one side instead of the floor on the other side.
