I usually buy the big bag of Oxbow tim hay for Dexter and it usually lasts a month.  I just bought a new bag on the 10th and it’s already ran out.  He constantly wants hay all of a sudden.  I usually give him 2 big handfulls a day too.   Is this normal or could there be something wrong?  Or is he just becoming a piggy because of winter coming up?  I have had him for 3 years and this never happened before.  His poops are fine, he is acting normal, and he’s still very spunky and happy.

Frankie was the same way, actually. He wasn’t too into hay, then one day he decided he needed it. Now I refill a few times a day and usually have to get up once during the night to give him some. Maybe he just needs more fiber. I wouldn’t be worried about anything.Your theory about putting on some winter weight is a good theory too. May be preparing for a nice big shed for you to grow in some denser fur. Woo.

Wouldn’t worry at all-it’s the best thing they could eat and your feeding the best brand
Mine are hoovering hay too-perhaps a winter thing. They shed coats in spring and fall based on changing light not temperature-so even though they are indoor bunnies perhaps reduced sunlight tells them to eat more?

I have been wondering about hay consumption also. We have had Bumblebunny for almost two years and in the last month or two he has been eating more hay than ever before. Instead of filling his basket every other day, I now need to get him fresh hay at least once a day.

My dad isn’t a bunny expert but I mentioned this to him and he said all animals seem to stuff themselves more during the colder months.. it makes sense.

Could it be that the hay coming thru to customers now is really fresh? Cut this Summer just passed?

Well, I know when mine was cut, as I help pack it lol. So its not that, in my case at least.

Thank you so much guys I was getting a bit worried but he gets so mad at me if I don’t have hay in there every second of the day now lol. He just sits on his top shelf of his condo and glares at me. Then when I try to put the hay in his hay rack he puts his head in there first so it all falls on top of him lol. The hay I got recently has been really green and soft and he goes nuts for it. I am glad he is ok though, just being a winter piggy

There’s no such thing as too much hay! If this pattern continues, you might look into ordering a big box of Oxbow hay. They have them in 25 and 50lb boxes and you save SO MUCH MONEY!

Where can I find the big boxes of oxbow tim hay at? I checked their website and didn’t see anything. I am very interested! I can just imagine putting Dexter in a 50 lb box of hay and see him go to town..hehehe.

Drs Foster and Smith carries both tim and orchard hay in the big boxes… And they usually have a flat shipping rate.

Dutchess is eating more hay as well. She eats much more at night than during the day, I suspect it’s from winter, to keep her nice and cuddly warm. I usually dump in a pile of hay bigger than she is, and she’s got most of it eaten in a few days. She seems to like to snuggle up in it or next to it too.

I think most pet stores will special order the larger sizes, if you are in Kenosha PetSuppliesPlus, or even PetCo. Dex is a very cute bun.
