So I think my buns favorite pasttime is digging the carpet in her house. I’ve been looking around on here for ideas. I came across the dig box, you know cardboard box with shredded newspaper. Bun loves shredding stuff…. But she also loves to eat stuff she’s not supposed to! I really want her to have more fun, but not sure what to do. She’ll totally eat the cardboard, I know it. How much is okay? I know it’s inevitable… and  I know other buns CHEW cardboard.

I saw something online where somone actually put dirt or soil into a long plastic bin for their bun to play in. I know that would be a gigantic mess lol… boyfriend said no way, but I’m tempted to do it anyway. Unless you wonderful bunnies have any other ideas??

Oh, forgot to say. We had this big futon chair that she was in love with. I let her dig in it all the time, so much that I’d have to go get her out of it b/c she’d get so carried away and forget her little heart was beating so fast. haha, I’m sure she was fine… but I worry. She dug so many holes in it, which I patched and sewed over and over, but it unfortunately has met it’s true end.

Bun says RIP Big blue chair.

The dirt isn’t such a great idea for indoors. But a shredder is a diggy box maker’s best friend. First, know that soy based ink is safe for bunnies, so you are in great shape with a yellow pages or other phone books. They are good toys by themselves, because a bunny will open it and start ripping out pages. Good fun. So toss last year’s down on the floor and watch her enjoy it.

You can take one and shred up the pages to fill the diggy box. Also, put a cardboard box on it’s side, fill it with shredded paper, and let her tunnel into it. BB has a video of one she gave to Vivian or Bailey, who burrowed into it, pushed it behind her, and was a very happy disappearing bunny.

Toilet paper rolls stuffed with hay is a good toss treat. It is chewing, tossing, and digging out goodies all at the same time.

You can hide a treat or two in the middle of a diggy box so she has to find it. Keeps her motivated to stay digging longer.

It’s ok for her to eat some of the cardboard and paper. It’s plant fibre. You could always scatter some hay in with it so she might be more tempted to eat that instead. Unless hay = litter box.

I’ve been wanting to set up a digging spot for my2 using small pebbles. Like river pebbles. I’ve been thinking to more this week as the hot weather is here in our part of the world. I think they’d love to lie on the cool pebbles.

My doe when she was a single bun, use to love a beanbag to dig, nibble and arrange. Bella and the big blue chair reminded me of that. : )

Thanks RabbitPam I’ll look for that vid

I had never thought of the pebbles idea. I wouldn’t lay on pebbles, but bunnies would probably enjoy it!

I read online about using a covered litter box for them to dig in, it would at least keep the mess down. That is what I am going to try with my little girl

I recently took a box, cut a hole in one end, and put a piece of carpeting on the bottom of it. Our rabbit absolutely loves it, and hasn’t dug at the carpeting in our apartment ever since!
