The doctor gave me 7 syringes with 0.2 ml of metacam in each.  At first I was holding her but then I noticed she kept biting on the syringe like she wanted more.  Today I gave it to her without holding her and she ate it all WOOHOO!  I hate forcing them to take stuff.  But anyways, my question is, how long does it take to see results?  I haven’t been home long enough to tell but today I’ll be home all day.  She had some poo smears on the cage floor this morning and will probably need a bath today   I’m not sure if that’s from the metacam or not.  The dr. said if I think it’s working then she’ll give me more metacam but since it can affect her kidneys, she’ll only get it every 3 days.  I have 2 more syringes left, so I dunno if I should get more or not…

Is this the first dosage and are you giving it to her daily for the trial period? If it’s daily you should see some results in 3 or 4 days.

This is a trial to see if it works since she only gave me 7 days worth of metacam. I’ve been giving it to her every day and today is her 5th day of having it.

Do you notice any improvement at all? I think with rabbits it’s such a challenge to tell whether or not their mobility is increased compared to a cat or dog.

Well the past few days I haven’t been home as much and they haven’t been out as much. But today I’m home all day so I can really watch her. She’s sleeping right now in her cage. The main thing that will determine if she seems better is if she can jump off the second floor of her cage after laying for awhile (or even laying in the living room and getting up) and running up to me normally. Usually after laying for a long time and getting up to quick she drags her back legs for a few seconds, like they’re asleep or stiff like arthritis. The doctor did x-rays and said she does have a little arthritis but nothing really bad. She has some calcium in her kidneys but there’s not much we can do about that, I don’t feed her alfalfa hay or pellets. It’s nothing really serious, it’s just the way she processes stuff she has a higher level of calcium than others.
I’ve tried to get video of her dragging her feet but I never know when she’s going to do it.

                  From my own experiance –
I went the Homeopathic way with one of my handicap bunnies who had a small spinal fracture. I was giving her Arnica Montana, and found it helped wonders and didn’t have the side effects of the metacam (which we had also tried). I would reccomend looking into it and asking your Vet about this option as well, specially if it is long term. No harm in getting more info

Hope your bunny’s feeling good again

Thanks Andi! I just emailed the vet about it. Hopefully I’ll hear back tomorrow.

Do you give the metacam with food? Food and/or water? Our less-abled Karla has been on daily doses for several years.

Treasured friend, you don’t have to give this with food and water. Just dose as prescribed.

I think our dr said you could mix it with food but Gracie loves it plain. I’m not sure what’s the flavor but she really likes it. No email or call back from the vet yet (she might be out of the office). Gracie’s still peeing outside her litter box though I just don’t know what to do. I know Sandy’s next to her (which we can’t move) but it’s not all territorial. I just feel so helpless, I wish she could just talk to me and tell me what’s wrong.

I got an email back from the dr.  She said I could try that if I wanted but she wasn’t sure if it would work or not.  I have no clue where you even get that.  But she said since she’s still having issues, she gave me a referral to an exotic vet.  But it’s all the way in Akron which is an hour away for us.  He’s also not on the care credit.  I just don’t know what to do   I mean she’s not sick, she just pees all over herself.  I really can’t afford to take her in anymore, especially if that dr. isn’t under that credit card.  Gracie gets car sick just by going to vet which is 15 minutes away. ( car sick for rabbits is drooling all over themselves, poor girl).

Meloxicam / metacam is honey flavored according to a rabbit-savvy vet who tasted this.   This was mentioned at an HRS education event I attended.  I also asked about giving with food and water and she thought it wouldn’t be a bad idea as metacam is rough on the kidneys if given for long periods.   When giving metacam or Tramadol, I’ll follow-up with a small amount of food…  Karla (our disabled girl of several years) will readily take metacam.   Not so with bitter Tramadol.

I know whatcha mean though about vets giving metacam without food or water.

Is Arnica available at Health Food stores?  (We would give to cottontails in wildlife rehabilitation.)

Karla is a 4.45 lbs. Her maintenance dose of metacam to alleve her disabled spine and permit comfort (especially after scooting about on carpeted floor, or therapy in her wheelcart) has been .28 ml to .3 ml for the last year (and longer). I see results within 10 minutes; Karla’s eyes tell me she’s feeling much more cheerful!

skibunny, from my experience with Karla, she’ll generate more ceco packs too from the honey-flavored metacam so I watch & wash her butt.

Andi, what side effects did you notice with the metacam?
