I kind of mentioned it in the Christmas thread but thought maybe it’d be cool to do a seperate thread on gift ideas. Unique gift ideas, ideas for people who are hard to buy for etc. Or share what you bought for your friends & family (provided they don’t snoop on here!! )

I usually get my grandfather a magezine subscription every year-I was doing the Canadian history mag and then last year found a mag totally on WWII which he was in and loves to talk about. But this spring he is planning to move into a seniors condo, so I thought I’d do the subscription then as a surprise and get him something different for Christmas. Course I’m stumped!

I just started working on gift lists and there are lots of great ideas out there…just can’t put my finger on any lol

Oh and I found some NEAT things today just googling neat gift ideas-I’ll share

This is SOOO neat but so impractical  http://www.hammacher.com/Product/17495?promo=search  Totally self contained ecosphere!!

And this is what I want lol A fish agility training set!!! Course my fish is JUST learning not to be scared when I walk by

        http://www.hammacher.com/Product/76216?promo=search

And then this is super sweet-it’s Canadian but I’m sure there are similar things in other countries. You basically buy someone a voucher for an adventrue-flying, helicopter, scuba, horse back riding etc. Very cool!!

        http://www.totalexperience.ca/

Anyways!! Please share what’s on your list, what you’ve bought (if it’s safe from peeping family members!) what your getting, etc!

I haven’t started shopping yet. Usually by this time I have most if not all gifts bought. I’m making a lot of embroidery gifts this year but have no idea what I’m buying the people who are getting store bought gifts. The hardest people to buy for are usually Ricky’s 2 sisters. I never have a clue and he’s absolutely no help.

I give vouchers for charity or volunteer hours at a shelter in their name they get annoyed but they can just get stuffed over giving crap and knowing it is going to be thrown out or chucked in the cupboard

I’m so glad I no longer have to gift anyone! I’m also happy no one is giving me gifts too…I’m just happy with the gift of spending time with my family and not stressing about what to give and what I’m going to get (that I cannot use)!

I am going to do mainly homemade gifts this year. I always crochet my mom a scarf and some arm-warmers. I thought I would buy my sister one of those little silver picture frame necklaces and put a picture of Mr. Bun-Bun in it for her (she’s in love with him.) For the others I think I’m going to decoupage containers or picture frames. A combination of pictures of the rabbit or abstract designs, I haven’t planned any of them. For my dad I was thinking of getting a cheap wooden frame, decoupaging it with pictures of his cat, and then using it to frame a nice picture of his cat! It’s a super easy craft and I think it’ll be fun. http://familycrafts.about.com/cs/decoupage/a/012201a.htm
This kind of stuff is only appropriate for parents/family members/close friends. My parents have money and don’t want me to spend money on them, so it’s a good idea.

The first christmas with my husband after we moved in together I bought him a dressing gown… but hid homemade vouchers in the pockets. His face when he put his hand in his pockets whilst ranting about the dullness of his present – hehehe!

K&K, just wanted to suggest Smithsonian Magazine as another subscription that is really enjoyed by men who like history. My Dad gets it (I think I started it for him) and he now gets it for me. History, animals, nature, art, all covered.

An idea: Netflix subscription for a month or 6 or a year. $10/month is a good option.

Thanks! That sounds NEAT -actually I bet my dad would love that!

You guys all sound so HANDY and CRAFTY my goodness!!! That’s awesome!!

I did a little shopping-just got Dave a small thing and a small gift basket for a work gift exchange. I was thinking that I should probably put some little baskets of goodies together for people at work the more I think about it the bigger my list gets!!

My brother went on a funny rant the other night. He is a chef and food is his passion. So he always gets -of course -cookbooks and cooking stuff right? He pointed out that he doesn’t need cookbooks because he went to school and his job supplies him with cooking supplies LOL Well he has threatened that this year he’s getting me diapers (since I work for an organization that does so called ‘old folks homes’) dave wires (because he works often with electrical equipment, my dad gasoline (because he worked in oil) my mom tylenol (since she was a psych nurse) and so on and so on BHAHAAH
Point Taken Phil…no more ‘food’ gifts

Well, all the special women in my life are getting homemade items (jewelry, scarves, mittens), but MEN are so difficult to shop for, and I go through so much turmoil every year trying to figure out what to get my dad!

Usually a gift certificate is a safe option that he likes, but I feel like that gets boring sometimes.

Oh man I went to a concert the other night and saw a girl wearing these shoes:

I’ve never seen bunny shoes before! She told me the brand, here’s the link. http://shop.irregularchoice.com/sea…l?offset=1#

I don’t wear leather, nor can I spend over $100 on shoes… nor can I walk in heels… I love these shoes though. These would be a great gift for a bunny lover… for those who have the money!

Search the term “bunny” on their website, they have the shoe in red and black too. Actually the girl’s shoes were a little different (the bunny was on front, not the side, and there was a little plastic carrot in front of him.) I think this company makes limited editions of shoes, different every season.

hee hee! Those zombie bunny flats are pretty cute. If I had a pair I’d end up wearing then round home though. I’m not game enough to wear quirky stuff out.

Maya, you could attempt to make shoes like that with an old pair. Fabric and laundry starch or cornstarch. Could be a disaster though….lol. Might not work so well on something that flexes or might get wet. You can wallpaper walls with fabric and starch and it’s removable.

I’ve thought about coming up with ‘skins’ for shoes before (like u get for phones and ipods etc). Probably already been done.

The Adventure/Outdoorsy type vouchers sounds a good idea for those that are hard to buy for. Maybe these S.O.’s? If they’ve mentioned some leisure activity they’ve always wanted to do but never got round to booking it.

I could easily make the flat bunny shoes, I do lots of sewing, quilting, and beading. However I’m a little too old to pull off pink bunny rabbit shoes… not really appropriate for a woman in her 30s… although I wear plenty of unusual stuff, those shoes are too “little girl.” But would be perfect for a little girl!
The heels could be replicated if you found a good pair, painted on polka dots, and glued on the rabbit brooch/ribbons. Just have to find the right kind of rabbit to glue on. I do lots of crafty stuff with clothes but have never attempted to do anything with shoes besides beading on cloth shoes. Hmmmm.

That’s funny. An australian rabbit advocate site is doing lip balm too. Maybe it’s connected somehow. Thanks for the link. Seems many members are vego/vegan and have awarenss of these resources. Even if not veg/vegan, cruelty-free options are good to know. Should be the only option!

What those animals go through so people can buy their favorite brands is so inhumane!!! You can go to The Leaping Bunny’s website and sign their pledge to go cruelty free!

All the people who are getting me gifts know to make sure there is a little bunny logo on the products or I won’t use it. My Mom always buys me lots of bath stuff for Christmas and I gave her a Pocket Cruelty Free Shopping Guide.

Vervacious has some awesome spices, cocoa mixes, and other seasonings. We just bought a bunch and we’re making up little baskets for friends and family. When we were up in Maine we visited one of their locations and got some. They are so yummy! You can even use many of them to season grilled veggies if you do not eat meat.

My sister is always making up little baskets of stuff like that. She’s so crafty. One year she gave all the adults on her list a “movie night” basket. It was a jumbo bowl filled with popcorn packets, popcorn seasoning,a king size chocolate bar, 2 cans of pop, and a DVD all wrapped up nice. I thought it was a great gift idea. We enjoyed it too!

You never know…. Do it once and they may make sure to tell you every year thereafter EXACTLY what they want.

That’s AWESOME! What a neat idea!

You never know…. Do it once and they may make sure to tell you every year thereafter EXACTLY what they want.

Hmmmmm Now that is a great idea

If you go to Dollarama they often have big plastic popcorn buckets – with the stripes on the side and saying “popcorn” on them – probably $1.25 now that they’ve raised some of their prices. I like licorice with movies, and you can get the big packs from Walmart for $1. Maybe a couple of other snacky type things and and few packets of microwave popcorn and you’ve got yourself a gift basket!
