So my newest baby has a problem with his eye. I noticed it late last night (I had to work all day). The membrane under his eyelid is swollen a little bit and it’s a little red. I had to work all day today, but I looked at it when I got home and it looks about the same. I’m wondering if maybe he got poked or got something in his eye that caused the inflammation. There is no discharge and his eye looks clear. There is absolutely no way I am taking him to the emergency vet. They know nothing about small animals there. I had a really bad experience with my chinchilla that I had years ago. I took him there because he was having a problem and they actually made it worse. So I’m just going to watch it and see how it looks by Monday morning. I can usually get in the same day if I call them in the morning. Does anyone have any advice? Does it sound like he got something in his eye or he got poked or something?

Yeah I wouldn’t rush in to the emergency vet for anything but a bunny who isn’t eating. I’d say as long as bunny is eating and drinking and comfy, it’s fine to wait until Monday. But a vet should be seen then
          I wouldn’t mess with the eye at all-at most -most- maybe put some fake tear gel in the eye just to keep it lubricated-it’s sterile and will be like adding tears…but I’d only do that if bunny is worrying at the eye to maybe ease it. Otherwise I’d just leave it until you can see your vet. {{VIBES}}

I looked at it just now and it looks like the swelling has gone down a bit. He had a little booger in the corner of his eye that I wiped away. It looks less red now too. I have to go to work, so I will check again when I get home. I don’t think it’s life threatening, he ate all of his food that I gave him last night and he was really hyper during play time too. I’m wondering if it was the hay I bought. It was more “sticky” than usual instead of the soft blades there were a lot of thick stems. Maybe one got him in the eye, I don’t know.

Okay, I just looked at it again. It is still a little swollen but is looks better. It is more pink than red now and it is just peeking out from underneath his eyelid a little bit now.

My rule for myself is, if it’s still hurting/bothering me/looking weird after 3 days, i go to the doctor. I’m not sure if that’s the way to go with bunnies though LOL I’d just see how it looks tomorrow, and if it seems to keep getting better, then maybe wait to see how it looks on Tuesday. If he did get poked with some hay or something like that, it seems like it might be going back to normal on its own…

I would take your bunny into your regular vet.  Your vet will probably do a test to make sure the eye is not scratched- and then they can prescribe meds to help it heal and relieve the pain.

Bunnies do get into the darndest things and there have been quite a few members that have had their bunnies get a scratch on their eye- and they do not know how it happened.  It can easily happen to any pet.

Okay, I will look at his eye again tomorrow and see how it looks. Then I will go from there.

I’d take him in too. I am nervous about eye issues, as Monkey has had ulcers in both her eyes, which do not heal on their own. Had I not taken her in, she would have lost her eyes

It’s also possible she could have scratched herself while grooming or itching. I agree with the others, I’d take her in just to be sure, the last thing you want is for her to, worst case scenario, lose her sight for something that could have been prevented. I hope it’s minor!

                            *** UPDATE ***

Okay… where did my post go? Did I accidentally delete it or something? I had tried to edit it last night, maybe I clicked on the wrong thing. Weird…

Well, let’s try this again. I wanted to update you guys on what has been going on and ask a question. I said in my other post (which is apparently MIA) that I took him to the vet. It was what I thought it was, he somehow scratched or poked himself in his third eyelid. She said it was completely superficial and that he has probably been repeatedly scratching it. She was hesitant to give antibiotics, but did give me some clear gel ointment to keep it moist. Anyway, he has apparently scratched it again. It was looking better but I found a bloody scab on his fur right below his eye yesterday and the area looked swollen again. I was asking what you all suggested I do. Any ideas? They don’t really make cones that small and he would probably hurt himself if I put one on him. But I don’t know how to keep him from scratching it.

Ugh… I was just looking at his eye and his fur is all icky looking. I hate having to put that gel on his eye, he hates it so much.

Agh! He’s been scratching it! No one has any suggestions?

Well, I looked at it this morning and it surprisingly looks so much better. He must not have caught it with his claw when he was scratching yesterday. Now if he can just keep it that way!

Please don’t scratch anymore, please don’t scratch anymore, please don’t scratch anymore…

Hi, sorry to have overlooked your post the other day. (Pardon the pun.)
I’m hoping that by today he’s improved, but my advice would be to call your vet and give her an update. If he is making it worse or preventing it from healing, she would have the equipment or recommendations of what to do for him based on having just seen it. She’d know if that’s a problem, or if it’s been treated enough to just take longer. Call her, especially before the holiday when she can’t be reached if it’s worse. She may want to call in a prescription of something else to try that you would need to pick up.

If your post was deleted it may be due to some sneaky spammers that have gotten onto the site lately.
