I’m looking for thoughts, opinions and advice.
Since we’re getting anew foster boy tonight I’ve been thinking about the pen. Right now I have a 3×4 pen setup but I’m wondering if a condo is nicer for a bunny. It seems like they would have more room to play when they aren’t out running and it seems like they would have more space without taking up the whole floor.
I’d like to know your thoughts. Which do you think is better. A condo or a pen?
I am a fan of the condos because they can offer levels and hide-outs in itself but they are harder to clean. I compromised this time around and made a pen with added condo-style shelf section. Pens tend to have sturdiier walls than condo grids so many owners go with pens for that reason.
My pen is made out of grids! It was the most affordable way for me to do it. So I was toying with the idea of making it into a condo.
I think for young active rabbits, the condos are great if they have levels.
I like the pens because they are so easy to clean.
well, if you have grids already — you have to make a condo! I think rabbits love them. ![]()
i bought a pen because I couldn’t afford a condo or building one myself. lol I also didn’t want Eddie cooped up in his cage, so i figured attaching a pen to his cage would give him room but still contain him. lol And I’m such a batty rabbit owner, even if I did get a condo, I’d still probably attach a pen to it. LOL Yeah, I don’t spoil my bunny! ![]()
When my buns were caged I preferred the pen but made shelves and bunny hammocks for them to hop up on. I liked the pen for the ease of cleaning and because I could just reach down and pet them. Plus it was a whole lot easier to get them back into their pen once free time was over.
I like the look of a condo better and it looks more stimulating but I don’t see me having the patience with building it or cleaning it lol.
I think my deciding factor right now is how much the additional supplies will be. Like the plywood, vinyl or carpet, ect. I love the idea of saving the floor space though.
I’m with you on the floor space Amy. That’s what I love about my Leith condo that my Dutch pair is in. I’m just lucky that they are still pretty agile at their age (8 years). My other two are about the same age and in pens but Toffee is a larger girl and she is pretty grounded and Mango has a bit of arthritis so they do best with no levels.
I much prefer the condo. It is a little more difficult to clean but actually overall I don’t think it’s that much harder than the pen. And it provides a lot more space for them to run around. And definitely takes up less floor space!
We’ve made some modifications to the condo since this picture was taken. It’s still divided into two halves, since the twins on the right don’t get along with the trio on the left. The wooden condo box on the left had been in their pen before, and it really was much too difficult to clean with it in the big condo, so that’s gone now and 2 more shelves added in its place. We took 2 of the grids with larger squares and bent them in half to make hay mangers and those are on the shared inside wall now. For me one of the very important things is to make sure your have a door opening on each level, in case you want to reach into the condo there and for cleaning. And in fact when cleaning it’s much easier to have all the doors open so that you can more easily reach in.

That’s incredible Annette. I don’t have room for anything that large. Either 2×3 grids or 2×4 grids and 3 grids high. I just need to figure out an affordable way to do the shelves. Pegboard or grids covered in plywood? Then carpet or vinyl remnants?
I’ve got support beams of, okay to tell the truth I’m not sure what they are. They’re square and were a little wider than the grid openings so I had to pare them down a little bit. Then I’ve got plywood on top, with those peel’n’stick vinyl flooring tiles on top of them for easier cleaning.
The bunnies live in the dining room, which is the only place we could reasonably put them on the main floor. This thing is 2×6, but it was built to house 6 bunnies.

I have both. A condo with a pen attached ![]()
I prefer pens – they’re easy to set up and take down for travel (my buns go with us to parents’ houses and to other homes for bunny sitting). I like that pens are easy to clean as well.
Well done condos look very cool, but I’ll admit that I’m lazy and like the ease of a pen! I don’t have the time or energy to buy all of the parts to a condo and set it up to look as nice as I would wish.
Floor space isn’t really an issue for me though since we only have two buns and they live in a dining room that we don’t really use (there’s still space for the table in there next to their pen). If I had more bunnies or their cage had to be in my main living area, I’m sure I would think differently!

I would not do anything smaller than 2×4 grids. Another thing to keep in mind is how easily the materials can be disinfected. If you are having a series of fosters and planning on using the same housing, everything has to be able to be thoroughly washed down. Or you’ll have to replace the shelving/flooring each time. I am a fan of the pen because it’s basic and very easy to keep clean.
I like both, they each have their advantages.
I like condos because my bunnies like being up high and they offer extra space if your floor space is limited. I like pens because they offer the bunnies space to run and binky.
I find that both are easy to clean. In my condo I have one huge door that goes all the way to the top, so I just open the door and clean it. The pen I just vacuum.
The bunnies like both. If your bun will be confined for a long time I’d recommend a pen, but if it is just a “hideout” I would recommend a condo. My bunnies have to spend their whole lives in their enclosure so I have both a pen and a condo attached!
