Well as if I haven’t posted enough here lately- there’s been another trauma but I THINK it’s gonna be OK. Here it is:
My vet kindly made a red mark on the dosing syringes for the MetaCam and the liquid Baytril- I was pleased, thinking it would make things easier. Well, today I mixed up BunBun’s meds, and then they sat for so long mixed with juice while I waited for my husband to help, that I discarded everything and started over. When I was preparing the new dose of Metacam, I noticed that the bottle had less than I remember. Then I tough, well good thing BunBun just getsa tiny amount of this cuz it looks like there’s not much extra. I gave BunBun his meds and all was well- he hopped off, very offended as usual, and went to sit with Nelli.
I was putting the meds away and rinsing the syringes when I suddenly noticed that I put the syringes back on the wrong bottles. Then it occurred to me that I could’ve done the same thing while dosing- given Bunbun 1.2 ml of Baytril, and .6 ml of Metacam. I don’t think I did, since I have extra Metacam than I need left, instead of being short and they don’t give that much extra. It has been almost an hour and Bunbun is acting very awake and normal, except he won’t eat. But he gets like that sometimes, esp after his meds cuz he’s upset. I looked up the max dose for guinea pigs and it was .7-1.4 mls pr kg of body weight. BunBun weighs 2 kg but rabbits are aren’t as tolerant of Metacam as piggies, so I cut the max. dose range in half, which would give me the same .7-1.4 mls. So I’m thinking that even if I did mess up, he will probably be OK.
I feel like such an idiot posting this and I don’t think I screwed up, but just in case I wanted to check it out with you guys. I will be extra EXTRA careful from now on with his meds. I’ll check back later t see what youall think- meanwhile keeping an eye on BunBun and doing more research. Whatta day.
10 MINUTES LATER- I really think he’s fine- he’s hopping around more lively than he’s been in days. Sorry to be a drama queen
I just got kinda scared. Well, I guess it’s a good warning for anyone else new to medicating their bunnies- always double check what med you’re giving., and how much. This was quite a humbling experience, to know that I could so easily screw up like that.
I am pretty sure the meds dosage will be ok, as it’s a one time mistake, I think they test for that before it goes to market. Don’t feel too badly, on occasion I have taken my dog’s meds by mistake. I’m still fine.
You can always call the vet if you have a concern about the dosage…that would be my recommendation. I have to say that I’ve heard varying things on metacam in rabbits too…there isn’t any real research done with rabbits on this medication that I’m aware of since it’s made for cats and dogs. As you said even the dosage amounts vary from .7 to 1.4 mls per kg of body weight.
AB you have taken your dogs medicine by mistake? rofl. Glad you were ok.
No you aren’t a drama queen. Glad bun is ok. Our buns do enuf to worry and scare us. lol Then we go scare ourselves ooops. lol
Honestly if you gave less of the metacam then more I wouldn’t even worry. A little bit more antibiotic won’t do anything. But more pain meds can be tough on the stomach.
THAT being said I know many people who look at an nsaid (like tylenol or ibuprofen, which are just like metacam-same indications, same side effects) read ‘take 1-2’ and take 3 instead. Or take them more often then they should. So even if you gave *more* metacam then you should have that should be fine.
This was once-so keep an eye-but I’m sure either way it went, things will be fine ![]()
Thanks, you guys
. I couldn’t believe it- finally he’s doing better, off his “sick chair” and eating, then I go and OD him. Bunny Mom of the Year.
Allegrabunny- Your dog’s meds?? Lmao- that would be a great phone call to have to make to your doctor! It definitely sounds like something I would do- I’ve taken my kid’s antibiotics instead of my thyroid meds a few times. Nice to know I’m not the only one with these issues :p
Sarita- Yeah, thinking back I don’t know why i didn’t call the vet…. if I had given him too much Metacam and it was harmful, I would’ve lost time doing my own research. Thank God it turned out OK- and I didn’t have to call the vet. I had to call them 3 times so far this week- I’m sure that they deeply regret taking BunBun on as a patient- lol. You’re right- the research on Metacam/rabbits is really hard to find! I found rats, guinea pigs, cats, dogs… no lrabbit doses though.
Thanks, Bunnytowne, for saying I’m not a drama queen. Now I would like you to tell that to my husband please! I’ve driven him crazy all week- more than usual that is.
Kokaneeandkahlua- as I read your reply, I noticed that I even messed up how I explained BunBun’s dosage! He should get .6 ml of liquid Baytril and .12 of Metacam (I wrote 1.2 ml)- he is allowed to have .25 ml of Metacam daily but I split it into two .12 doses for more even pain coverage. So he would’ve gotten almost 3X the dose of Metacam that he was prescribed, and only .12 ml of Baytril. From what I read online, he would’ve been OK, but I’m still glad I didn’t have to find out.
Anyway, hopefully things are looking up. BunBun is doing really well today- he even attacked his fruit/green dinner like normal tonight! He was so happy- until I had to make him into a bunny burrito and stuff his meds into him. Poor thing. But I keep reminding myself that nobody like doing this, but must be done. I am glad that I’ve finally gotten past the not being about to syringe feed BunBun meds- now when I think he has gas, I will be able to just give him simethicone, instead of stressing about it for hours. Well, I will keep you all informed of BunBun’s progress- thanks again for your help!
Now we know he’s ok I had to have a little smile at this! One evening Oxo took his baytril with remarkably little fuss. I realised the next evening that would be because I wasn’t putting the syringe far enough down the bottle and had actually administered .8ml of air ![]()
glad you’re bun is doing better, you can imagine my dog’s face when I took her meds.
Allegrabunny- Lol- well at least you didn’t give the dog your meds- I’m sure she really would’ve disapproved of that!
Grumpbun- That’s great- I can so picture it! Don’t feel bad- I fed almost a whole dose of Baytril into BunBun’s dewlap until I realized where it was going. BunBun has the remarkable ability to withdraw his whole snout/mouth into his dewlap- like a furry little turtle.
