  My boyfriend and I bought a dwarf hotot when he was 8 weeks old over the summer. Now he is about 5 months old and has been healthy except for a bout of coccidiosis when we first got him. I noticed a couple weeks ago that he has some clear to white eye discharge that is only really in his right eye. There isnt very much and I remove it for him with a Q-tip. This past week though I have noticed a yellow color on the fur around his nose and some yellow-green boogers that hes never had before. He doesn’t do any sneezing and he has a tremendous appetite. He is very energetic and binkies all the time when I let him out daily. I have him in my dorm room and as a college student I can’t afford to have a vet run a million tests and rack up a huge bill for me to pay. I am taking him to the vet this weekend but I would just like to have some insight of maybe what this could be so we have a good starting point. I do use perfume in my room so maybe an allergy? I hesitate to say for sure that its a respiratory infection though because of the lack of sneezing and his energy and that hes still eating a lot. I hate to see my bunbun sick and I just wanted to run it by someone to see if they knew what this could be?

  Welcome! Rabbits are very sensitive to perfumes, cleaners and other toxic substances, and exposure to any of these would be especially harmful to a rabbit’s delicate respiratory system in a tightly confined area like dorm rooms are. I would air out the room and discontinue using any perfume in it. It would be best not to use any perfumes but if you’re set on using it, wait til you’re in the hall or in an outside bathroom to put it on and wash it off before going near the bunny. If he has a respiratory infection which it sounds is likely, treatment from a rabbit-savvy vet can clear up the infection and then his nasal symptoms should clear up as well. But it can’t hurt and can only help for your bunny not to be exposed to any perfumes, room deodorizers, cleaning agents or other toxic substances as they’re very harmful to him.   It sounds respiratory. The vet will check him out and might just be able to prescribe some meds without doing cultures and testing. If so, he should be on the meds for a full 10-14 days. If the meds don’t resolve the problem tho, he’ll have to go back for cultures.
  
  Is this the same vet that treated him for the coccidia? Did he ever have a follow-up fecal test for that?

  What you are describing makes me more suspicious of an infection than an irritation. Anything with a green/yellow color is usually going to indicate infection as opposed to clear- which could be the bodys way a flushing an irritant.

  Thank-you for responding to my post. Yes I will discontinue using my perfume around him I didn’t realize until I looked it up that things like that can irritate them. Yes I am taking him to the same vet that treated him before for the coccidia. There was no follow up fecal test as that was my boyfriends job to take them in a sample and he dropped the ball on that one.. but he hasnt had any diarrhea since he took the antibiotics for it and his poops are normal. I think he probably does have an infection unfortunately. I am just glad that he is acting normally and hopefully I’m catching whatever it is early. I am taking him to the vet on thursday so when he is diagnosed I will get back to you about what the vet says and what he prescribes but I suspect hell give him a round of Baytril and see if that clears it up.

  Awe you really love your little bunny I can tell. You can still take a fecal test to the I mean take his droppings to the vet to test.
  
  This follow up is usually not billed. So it shouldn’ t cost not normally.
  
  I bet you are anxious for thursday to have him seen.
