She made a nest of her fur, then i checked this morning, she has tipped the nest over, layed all the babies next to eachother, and she put one far far off to the side, why did she do this?! What should i do? It’s cold, what if the baby dies? It seems to be fed, it’s stomach is very big. Please help?!

I don’t know anything about baby rabbits- I’m sure someone more knowledgable will reply soon- people are so nice here . But I would think you would want them in a warm place- are they outside? Then again, moving them may upset the mom- I would at least provide lots of nesting material- straw, old clean towels/blankets, even lots of shredded paper towels or toilet paper would do- as long as mommy doesn’t eat it (my buns adore paper prodects). Many mother animals don’t do a great job caring for their 1st litter, I know that much. And the baby that she separated may have something wrong with it. If it’s stomach is much larger than it’s siblings, it may be having kidney failure- both of my hamsters puffed up before they died. I wish I could help more- meanwhile, search online for a hotline for rabbit info- maybe they could give immediate advice. This must be so stressful for you- I hope everything works out.

Yeah, this is her first litter, she seemed like such a good mom till i took a look at it this morning! Idk why she would put one to the side though, I’d like to save it, but will she get mad? She put it to the side to die, am I right? But she seems to check on it often, not sure why she did this!

First, you need to separate the male and the female as she can get pregnant soon after giving birth. It would be a good time to get your male neutered.

Second, if they are outside, bring them in. Babies need to be warm to digest their food. Put the other baby in the nest with the rest. Give mom unlimited pellets as she needs this while she’s nursing.

They’ve been inside, and I seperated the father the day before she gave birth. If I try to move the baby, she becomes seriously defensive and tries to attack me, I don’t want her to get angry. Also I found a baby FAR from the cage, outside of it. as if she was angry and threw it, I picked it up and wrapped it up. Im aware its too late to put it back, but I’d rather not, seeing that she THREW IT THAT FAR, im aware of what to do with this baby. But what to do with the one put to the side? She flipped over the nest and the babies are laying on the wire!

Can you let her out of the cage and then move the baby – you need to try. Keep trying – it may not be too late.

You need to get her off a wire bottom too – that’s not good for rabbits. They need to be on a flat surface.

Let her come out on her own.

Try coaxing her out with a treat.

Keep trying to put the babies in the nest! If there’s one specific baby that she keeps throwing, try to put them under a couple of babies. A mother throwing away a baby bunny doesn’t always mean the baby has something wrong with them.

Also, if her nest is just in her cage and not in a box, the babies might be crawling out on their own. If you think that’s your problem, you should put the nest in a small box.

thanks, i put the babies back inside and she seems to be okay with it. I called a rabbit breeder though and he said that it means the baby is sick and will die soon /:

It’s good you put the baby back in. You do what you can, but it is true that some mothers will avoid babies that they (somehow?) know might be sick. I think this is their way of reserving precious resources (milk) so it goes to the babies that have the greatest chance of survival. But who know, they all might still survive.

If you need to move the mother and babies inside still, see if you can coax mama into a cardboard box and then move the babies. It’s very important that they are not outside right now.

It could be-often they move the baby away if there is soemthing wrong. But also that baby could be crawling on his own, or be fine just mom doesn’t want that many. It’s hard to know why they do those things.
We had a few litters at the shelter so I did lots of reading on it. If a baby gets cold you can put them in a ziplock bag (open of course) and run warm water (ie. from room temperature and increase it to bath water temperature slowly) over the baby. The ziplock bag is to keep it from getting wet.
Lure mom out with her food and water so you can put babies back.
If the baby passes, its not your fault-these things do happen.

Mom’s cage can be cleaned (i.e. you can then put her somewhere that babies can’t crawl away) in about a week.
It’s an old wives tale that moms will reject a baby with your scent on it-so go on and put that baby back if you need to.

Drape a towel or sheet over most of the cage to keep it warmer and quieter and darker. Keep mom undisturbed as much as you can, and let her eat as much as she wants-that means free feeding pellets and lots of hay and any veggies she normally eats. She’s going to drink way more then she did so ensure you are watching her water. Babies start eating solid food pretty much as soon as their eyes are open-which is way earlier then the internet told me but that’s just what they do. They’ll need to stay with mom for eight weeks though. Eyes will open at about one week.

Good luck and ask any questions you have.

I’ve found dropping a towel or blanket over the mother and picking her up in it can help in calming and subdueing a resisting rabbit and covering her eyes with the blanket might get her to be calm and still so she can be moved somewhere else and you can tend to doing everything you need to in making the babies comfortable. My rabbit stopped madly struggling at the vet when they were able to cover his eyes, he was then still, wrapped in the towel burrito style and then they were able to examine him. The sooner you are able to bring the cage into the warm house and get the babies off the wire and have them on a flat surface such as in a nice box, the better off they’ll be. Some thoughts. Hope it helps.

If you move them too far from where she left them or change the nest before they have fur she may eat them. This happened years ago to a friend of mine. Coz she put them in a box and the mother went back later and it was different so she sensed danger. I would slide some flat cardboard under them but try not to disturb the actual nest, and pick up the baby and put it back with the others. Just a thought.
