        Late August

I’m a first time rabbit owner, and I bought a rabbit from a local pet shop who seemed to be ‘crying’ (whitish/yellowish drop of goopiness in the corner) from his right eye. This was two months ago. Upon arriving home, I looked it up, and saw that it was probably an eye infection. Now, being a naturally paranoid person, I didn’t waste any time seeing a vet. He prescribed my rabbit vetrochloracin opthalmic ointment and something called ditrim liquid to be taken orally, both twice a day for 1 week. upon taking him back to the vet for his checkup, everything seemed fine and there had been no more crying for about two days. he tells me to continue administering ditrim till it is used up

Mid september, about a week or two weeks later, it seems to recur, although this time in a much smaller amount. I use the vetrochloracin in a small amount to see if it clears it up, and it seems to, but this is where it gets a bit fuzzy. I believe I kept using the vetrochloracin because it came back again after that time, this time for about 4 days or so, and the eye problem dissapeared again.

So fast forwarding to the past week and a half, it came back again. Yes, I know it was/is probably stupid to keep administering the vertrochloracin, but it seemed to get rid of the problem. This time I did it twice a day, for a little over a week. I just stopped using it the day before yesterday. Now my rabbit seems to have something from the eye again. The thing is, excuse my language, but, I don’t know what the hell it is. most of the pages I read say pus from an eye infection is about the consistency of toothpaste, yet it never seemed to be like that, it has basically been just a little speck that runs out of the front of his eye and forms a little droplet, basically in the shape of a small, small bead, and almost looks like a crusty, but still doesn’t seem to be as dry as a crusty. I have not seen a single picture of a rabbit eye infection that looks like what my rabbit ever had. it might just be because most of the pictures I see show a rabbit with a lot of goop, that appear to have had it or have had it progress for quite a while. She also never gets any discharge from the other eye. The sides of her face are different colors on either side (can’t judge the eyes against one another), so I don’t know whether or not the area around the eye is actually inflamed, but it doesn’t appear to be. She hasn’t had any discharge from the nose, but I have seen her sneeze on two occasions in the past week.

I’m probably going to take her to the vet if I see it come back by monday, but I have some questions that may be a bit strange to most of you, but again I am a fairly new rabbit owner.

Pictures/examples would help greatly with my questions, because I have searched nearly every rabbit medical page about this and it seems none of them have a truly good example of any of these things

Exactly how does a rabbit crusty (sleep) look?

What does a eye infection or dacrostysis look like at the start?

Do rabbits usually get an infection in one eye at a time or both at a time?

Does anyone know how to check a rabbits teeth/mouth area for abcesses in the root? If there is a lump around a rabbits mouth that may be an abcess, how does it feel?

Are there any things I can do to rule out certain possibilities of what is ailing her?

Anything helps at the moment guys, I worry a lot and get quite a lot of anxiety easily and check up on her nearly around the clock because of it. And not to sound selfish, but I’m a college student and things can get rather hard balancing the money I have to take care of everything that suddenly came up in the past month, so I like to study and make sure and get as much insight as possible about this before rushing to the worst conclusions like I usually do.

I’ll probably introduce her with one of the videos I made of her recently, she’s really sweet, and I want to make sure she’s always ok. Even with all the worry she gives me at times, my life and my family seem much happier with a little rabbit running around the house.

Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any help.

Hi, and Welcome, and Yes – videos!

I haven’t had experience with an infection in the eye, so therefore have not used the treatment your vet gave you. However, spockie had a chronic eye duct problem his whole life, which is pretty common. It leaked clear, not milky or yellow. When his eye area got wet, I had a small tube of white goo that went into the corner, just a drop, melted from his body heat, and cleared up the duct problem in about 2 days. The vet determined this was the problem by putting in a solution initially that glowed under a blue light. Diagnosis and cure were simple, and since it reoccurred frequently over the years, the treatment was always in the house and worked.

My first impulse was to have you seek a second opinion, in case the eye diagnosis and treatment can be something other than what your vet has determined. However, you could also call her and say it keeps reoccuring and ask her what should be your next step. It may be that you are not administering the meds that she gave you effectively now, so need exact instructions to clear it up. Probably more time, or a stronger dose, or something similar.

Don’t have pix of a normal crustie (sorry I read this after I wiped one off of Herself) but it’s like a tiny white snot. It can be soft, but less than half the size of the tip of your pinkie fingernail, appears at the corner like ours do, and wipes off easily. Not runny, not long or large. Usually not clear or yellow.

Sneezes, lumpy jaw, crusties that are not typical, all can indicate something more is going on. That’s a vet visit, I think.
You can assist yourself with the $ before going for what becomes a chronic condition by applying for Pet Insurance with VPI. It’s $12/month and well worth it. They will not cover a pre-existing condition, so i would apply immediately. They may need to check with your vet, so the records might prohibit coverage of this particular issue, but it’s worth finding out. They don’t cover routine speuters, but it’s really nice insurance the minute you have a new medical need that can get very expensive. You just need to plan your pet’s costs into your budget whether it’s emergency vet care $ or monthly expenses for food, litter, etc. Starting now when bunny is healthier is better so it’s available for the senior years when most costs come up.

Exactly how does a rabbit crusty (sleep) look?

My bun usually gets this every day, and her’s are just tiny little specks in the corners of her eyes, usually white. I wipe my finger across or if its large enough just give a little tug and out it comes. It is not runny, it is just like ours.

What does a eye infection or dacrostysis look like at the start?

I haven’t experienced this so I don’t know, but with most eye infections I’m assuming the eye might tint a different color to give you an indication. Do her eyes look clear or red/pink?

Do rabbits usually get an infection in one eye at a time or both at a time?

It could be either, I’m thinking, depending on the origin of the infection.

Does anyone know how to check a rabbits teeth/mouth area for abcesses in the root? If there is a lump around a rabbits mouth that may be an abcess, how does it feel?

Feel around her jaw, there should be no lumps at all, if there is that would indicate something. If she have a tooth problem, her eating/drinking would be off due to pain. If you palipate her jaw and cheeks, is it painful for her? If she had an abcessed tooth I doubt she’d be in no pain.

Are there any things I can do to rule out certain possibilities of what is ailing her?

I think this is probably a time to consult your or a different vet. I’m not sure how much of human afflictions can go to rabbits, but when I get a sinus infection my right eye is always the one that tears up, my left eye doesn’t. I don’t know if rabbits can get sinus infections, but I used that as an example of an overactive eye that had nothing to do with the eye itself. Perhaps it’s something else that is just affecting her eye, like you mentioned something from her teeth. Do her ears look all right as well?

I’m super new to bunnies myself, but that’s what I would be questioning if it was my bun. I hope you can get this sorted out

There can be other things than infection that causes eye discharge.  I don’t think you mentioned the age of your bunny- but if it is young, I would suspect it was from a breeder and exposed to other rabbits and infections can be transmitted from rabbit to rabbit.  But a nontransmittable infection, or even an eye injury can cause discharge.

I would call your vet and give them an update on what is going on and ask their advice.  It does not sound normal and should be looked at.  Wet eye discharge will start to affect the skin around the area usually- making it raw and sensitive.

Rabbit “sleep” crusties are always dry and very, very small- My bunnies let me clean their faces if I lick my finger and “pet” over the corner of the eye to get it- they did not like it at first- but soon seemed to think that I was grooming them.
