I’m wondering if any of you here have mastered getting your bun to come to you when “called” for?  If so, how do you do it? Do you call them by name, snap, whistle, tap fingers, use treats?

We use pellets as a “treat”….At first I would sit on the floor with Oliver, put all my fingers and thumb together and “peck” at the floor while saying “here…” as soon as he came to where I tapped my fingers I would give him the treat. I would do this in various locations all around me…giving him the treat each time. Oliver is very good at going into his cage when told to, usually with a double-clap then a snap….then a point LOL. Hey, if it works…it works

However, if Oliver has alot of energy and has just been let out to roam….he’s going to do his own thing until he is good and ready to pay any attention to me.

Eddie came really good when I called for him. Sometimes I would shake the treat bag to get them to come when they were being stubborn. Lolli doesn’t really come to me unless I have treats, but she will show herself. lol

Hey thanks everyone for your feedback! I don’t have treats yet, he’s still a baby, but what kind of treats do you all use? And can baby bunnies have treats? He’s really comfortable around me, he comes and lets me pet him, and he’ll climb in my lap, but so far won’t come when I WANT him to lol. I know it takes time and patience, I’ve trained dogs, but never rabbits!

Chace actually comes up to me everytime i call him.even if he’s sleeping, his ears perk up and come to me.im the only one who he listens to though.when my boyfriend calls him,he wont even care.LOL. i just kept saying his name ever since i got him & he’s really smart to understand that its his name.

just try to call your bunny & give him a treat if he comes up to you.

Raisins and dried cranberries (unsweetened) are good bunny treats. Some people use pellets.

My rabbits will come if I say raisin and crinkle the bag, if they can be bothered. Most of the time they can’t – I’m just not interesting enough. They’ve got good at going home when they’re told – they’ve twigged the can’t avoid it for long so they may as well do as they’re told and get a treat.

Fresh foods are best for treats, bits of carrot (a matchstick carrot can be cut up into multiple pieces), raisins, craisins, bits of herb. Pellets are great too b/c they are already part of their diet. Oxbow makes papaya tablets that can be used as a treat. And all of these must be in limited amounts. So not 20 raisins, no more than 2-5 raisins a day!

You do not want to use cereal (Cheerios are NOT an acceptable, healthy treat!) You do not want to use treats with seeds, excess sugar, dairy (yogurt drops are a no-no). Pretty much everything pet stores sell as treats for rabbits are NOT healthy.

I find that both of my bunnies respond much better to tapping on the floor than their names. I didn’t even really train it – I started doing it to get their attention, and when they would come, I would give them a treat. Now they both come racing across the room the second I tap the floor. I’ve tried adding their names to it and Hannah gets it for the most part, but Otto doesn’t really seem to understand the name thing at all no matter how hard I try – but the tapping gets his attention every time.

For treats, I use pellets in a little measuring cup and I’ll just shake the measuring cup back and forth. I like pellets because they’re tiny, so you can give quite a few before you’ve even given 1/8 of a cup or something. With bigger treats, you might give 3 and you’re already through the daily ration. Plus, unlike sugary treats, my buns don’t go super crazy for them, so they’re able to focus on training better. When I give dried papaya (their other treat) both bunnies end up climbing all over each other and me to get at the food, rather than focusing on what they’re supposed to be doing. I usually save the papaya for the end of training, or for something they do especially well, or for coming when called (I’ll put the little pieces in a ziplock bag and shake it to reinforce my “come” command).

^^^Some of that might be them sensing the vibration as they are on the ground, rather than the actual sound of tapping… interesting!

Beka, I agree – I think they can definitely feel the vibration as much as they can hear it.

I’ve noticed that most bunnies learn their names early and quickly. They can readily respond to being called by their name.
As they get older they learn that you are fairly dull and simply choose not to. LOL

Bun-Bun comes when I whistle. I think it’s hysterical, he acts like a dog. Most of the time I don’t give him a treat either (for him it’s just pellets as treats.) Maybe his previous owner had done this, I don’t know. He sometimes responds to his name as well. Both of my cats know their names and the bunny doesn’t respond to their names… it’s funny. Whoever mentioned above that they know how to train dogs (sorry I’m too lazy to look) should have no problem training the bunny! They seem to respond really well to sounds and patterns (my bunny runs in the same direction every time he comes out of his cage, and then explores almost the same way every time, it’s cute.) Yes training your bunny to respond to you is worth it, people who aren’t used to rabbits see that when they come over and can’t believe it!

Zeus and the fridge have a very close relationship.. the fridge calls to him by the sound of the crisper drawer opening.  He comes running every time he hears it.

The only time I call my bunny is when he has been let out and now it is time to be put away and get pellets. I make a clicking noise with my tongue and call his name and he comes RUNNING. He loves his pellets like no other so it works well. HOWEVER if I had let him out of his pen within 1 hour of trying to put him back he “forgets” his name, or doesn’t “hear” me. No matter what. 1 hour seems to be the magic number.

I use matchstick carrots and Bite size veggie shreds! Today I used swiss chard haha. Franz started running up To the fridge after I showed him that’s where the veggies are! He likes the crinkle sounds too I think.

My boys won’t usually come when called but if I’m on the couch and I “thump” the pillow a few times they will hop up to say “hello”. Olivia is too self-absorbed being such a Diva that she ignores me.
