› FORUM › DIET & CARE › Herbal Tea?
Well, since I’ve been home for a few days with Hugo and the girls and not working on the house I keep coming up with things to think about. Sorry if I’m bugging anyone!
Anyway, I was reading on my local HRS website that a small dish of herbal tea or apple cider could be given as a treat. Since I don’t give Hugo any fresh fruits and veggies right now I wondered if this might be an option. I know a lot of buns like mint and I’m always drinking mint or peppermint tea. Do you think this would be an ok thing to try? or maybe chamomile? I know that’s in some oxbow treats.
Thanks for your opinions. ![]()
I don’t think it would hurt at all – now the question is, will he even eat it….how is he doing on his pellet and hay only diet?
my rabbits passed up the chamomile even though it was in big pieces and grown in my mother’s garden. My rabbits love bay leaves which is not a tea but I keep it in the same cabinet. They also took sage and a flower blossom tea mix that I did not like at all. Incidentally, the flower tea mix looked and smelled exactly like the hay topper bouquet you can buy for bunnies. I have considered making a hay topper tea for myself but I am just kidding.
How about just buying fresh mint at your local grocery shop as a little treat? But other than that, I see no harm in a bit of herbal tea.
I give mine diluted apple juice because I need them to drink some stinky herbal remedies, but perhaps herbal tea is better!
Sarita: He is doing much better with the hay and pellets only. Especially since the antibiotics are giving his tummy a little trouble. I think it’s not as bad as a few days ago when I asked about it though. He’s just on overload, the poor thing.
Petzy: I had noticed that a few herbal teas I’ve had reminded me of my days at the barn. Hugo will eat anything he can get his nose into. Had to guard our container of cheese balls the other night. He tried to steal them and the can of Pepsi right out of my husbands hand.
Karla: I had thought about giving it fresh as a treat but the vet said to stay away from fresh foods since his tummy reacted to his diet. That’s why I thought maybe the dried and steeped would be a better option for him now.
He begs for food so much. I feel so bad with everything he’s been through and would love some more treat options for him. Maybe I’ll ask my vet about it today too. Shortly after I posted this I had to make another appointment for him. He has a new abscess o his foot. It’s actually where he had 2 really close together that had healed closed have turned into a large one that is very painful for him today. My poor Hugo. =(
Thanks for the opinions and suggestions!
Are you giving him some kind of prebiotic along with the antibiotics?
Oh, how about dried herbs perhaps instead of fresh greens? These days I am collecting tons of herbs and plants for winter time. I got rose hips shells, willow leaves, nettles, blackberry leaves et.c. Some of them you can just let dry out on their own, while the rose hips for instance needs to go in the oven at a very low temperature for a couple of hours. That way they keep all the vitamins and beneficial properties.
With store bought herbal tea I’d be worried about what else is in it, they are always adding things. So it’s best to double check.
I bought chamomile organic tea to use as a face/eye whipe for my degu as recommended from my Vet, never though of bunnies actually drinking it. I actually wonder how many would?
Karla, do your rabbits like to eat rosehips? My rabbits will not touch them in any form.
Not even if you dry them and remove the seeds? Mine love them dried and seedless. I was adviced to give it to Freddie due to his struggle with E.Cuniculi, so at first I bought it online, but then I realised I can just go out and pick them myself. It is actually great fun. I fed one partly dried to Molly today, and she loved it, but I have heart others saying that their bunnies don’t like them fresh.
I am becoming such a botanist
Apart from the fact that I also brought home hemlock…thinking it was Sweet Cicely.
Yes, it’s fun to pick them but mine will not even try them, even dried and seeds removed. My dog eats them right from the bushes so I imagine it is a matter of predilection.

I wish I knew more about what type of herbs were good for different things. Especially for Hugo with all the problems he’s had with his tummy and these abscesses. I’m a very natural a fresh person since we can’t have wheat, barely, rye or oats in our house and my girls seem to react to most dyes and fragrances.
Mine hate rosehips but some LOVE rose peddles.
I actually like fresh rosehips lol, i used to eat them when i was a kid.
I accidentally left my mug of peppermint tea out and I caught Arduina sticking her head in the mug slopping up the tea! It was very cute. Luckily the only ingredient was peppermint, so yeah make sure there is not green/black tea leaves mixed in. It should be fine if they have a little. Also make sure to take the tea bag out and that its not too hot ;-).
I’ve offered cold brewed fruity teas and had them just look at it suspciously. I also tried the tiniest amount of marigold (calendula) tea in their water and the same thing happened.
I have fed wet echinacea tea and they’ve eaten that. I just dip it in water once. They’ve had it dry but seems to like it better wet. This had lemon in it too so I was surprised. Jersey pulled the wet bag out of my cup once.
Mint, blackberry leaves or tea & even rose petals/leaves/stems are good for tums I think.

Blackberry leaves are actually good for tummy problems. And if you can get a hold of dried echinecea, I’d suggest you do that too – it is a strong immune booster that has an effect on bacterias and parasites. ,
Thanks! I think I’ll try the peppermint when I make myself a cup tonight. After all he went through yesterday he could use a treat.
My rabbits love mint. They really gobble up the herbs – I usually buy basil, mint and dill and they love all of those (for the most part, dill is not everybuns favorites but the majority like it).
Just looked at my tea. It’s a mint medley. It’s all natural and caffeine free. Here are the ingredients: peppermint leaves, spearmint leaves, rose hips, lemon peel and hibiscus. Is this ok? I wasn’t sure about the hibiscus. Thanks.
Absolutely all of that is okay. Let us know what he thinks of it.
I know in relation to cats that it can give them diarrehea, but I don’t know about rabbits. Honestly, I stick to the: would rabbits in the wild eat this? And hibiscus is not something I expect the European wild rabbit to eat
Not meaning that it is bad for rabbits then, but it is just my general guideline.
Don’t you have a shop near you that sells herbal remedies and stuff like that?
I’ve had those dry flower blends for rabbits with hibiscus in them for my rabbits and I’ve never had a problem with it for my rabbits. And I’m pretty sure they put some hibiscus in the botanical hay from oxbow.
Cool. As I said, I have no idea about it
Do you know if it has any beneficial properties?
I don’t have any store like that close to me unfortunately. I’ll get him a regular peppermint next time I’m out though. I had a neighbor with a hibiscus plant and the wild rabbits would eat the flowers right off of it. She wasn’t happy about it but I always thought it was cute to see them steal the pretty flowers. I’ll let you know if he likes it. He tries to drink my tea and coffee all the time and any food we eat. You can be chased around the house when you’re eating here. =)
Rabbits are just a bunch a herbal-vores! LOL
YEs hibiscus mine liked chammomile mint and love basil
