I often have questions that I don’t feel are worth their own thread. If you do too, then I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread for those little quicky questions.

        My questions:

        1. My bf bought Yesterday’s News Scented by accident. It’s just been sitting in my basement for months. Can I use it, maybe mixed in with the other non-scented?

        2. Does anyone else’s bun get a winter coat? Olivia is way fluffier right now than in the summer. She does this every fall about this time. She reminds me of a horse; short, silky, shiny coat in summer and thick, wooly, rougher coat in winter. Is this abnormal for a house rabbit? Storm and Bindi pretty much stay the same all year. I will try to post a pic so you can see the difference.

I would use the scented YN – I’ve used it before on my rabbits without incident – it would be a shame for this to go to waste.

Lolli seems to stay the same since her coat is so plush. Eddie seemed to get a more thicker, fluffier coat. Maybe it depends on how thick their fur usually is? ?????

              Opposite of Sarita – LOL.
I would return the Scented YN to the store. I have always had very good luck returning pet supplies, even opened one. You just have to tell them that your pet refused to use it and they let you do an exchange for a product you like better. Animals are so finicky that it happens all the time, so they are used to returns. If you can’t, then I have donated my bags of rejects (I reject all things scented, bunny rejects all things that bother her on a whim on alternate Thursdays….) to shelters or my vet for them to use for their overnight guests.

Oh RP  that is a good idea.  And donating them to the vets.  Never thought of that.

I don’t think the scented would hurt if used occassionally til it is gone but hey if you can return it all the better.  Exchange like RP said good idea

THanks for opening this thread! i was just thinking a little while ago on how many Q i had and wondering if i should start a new thread or not.

Q: Is fruit important in a rabbits diet? like does it have important nutrition in it that they don’t get from veggies and pellets and hay? ( of coarse i would only give a little bit a day.) if so what fruit?

Q: my dad bought my veggies last time and i wasn’t with him and he got Kale. I know it is safe for them but on the HRS website it says not to feed to much. but my dad bought 3 bundles of it and i don’t want to wast it. so how much is to much?

No, fruit is not a neccessary part of a healthy rabbit’s diet. They get all of the vitamins they need from hay, veggies and pellets.

I’ve personally never had problems giving my bunnies kale as if it’s any other veggie. Just give it to them as you would give something like lettuce. If you notice any changes in their pee or poop, lower the amount to two or three small leaves of it per week.

Mocha, just go easy on it if they haven’t had it before. Humans can eat it too…The bunnies always get the most nutritious food!

                      I have some questions.

                      1. Jersey is having a full molt – first time in over a year. Above her tail she has bald spots where you can see just skin. Kind of freaky. It all looks healthy but I’ve never see this before. If anyone elses rabbits shed this way, how long before the fur grows back on these spots? The areas seem protected enough by surrounding fur but it looks soo fragile up close.

                      2. On Saturday Rumball was unwell. He refused food, slept alot and tended to lie in the litterbox alot. By about 2 or 3 pm I found him eating cardboard so offered him some hay & he ate it. He seemed to have come around.
He’d been fine the night before, even when I saw them in the early hours (restless night). I’m never sure if it’s gas, urinary or something else. Like a full feeling in the tummy. His turn around makes me think perhaps it was gas? Is there other things though were they can be unwell quickly then recover within a day? I just find it odd he was so down and thought he needed a vet, then once he ate he seemed much improved. He wasn’t super keen on the evening pellets but ate some greens later. Mostly he keep eating hay. I wonder if he was sluggish in the gut and knew he needed fibre?

Jerseygirl: this is from the HRS

”Bald spots on rabbits are quite common when they are shedding. I have one Angora rabbit for instance, that gets totally naked except for her face and feet. But, short haired rabbits can do the same thing. If these bald spots occur from shedding, they will begin to grow back within a week or two.”

I would expect jersey to be fully back to normal within a month. Just watch for any increased redness in the skin, just in case, since it’s vulnerable.

Spockie would occasionally have an off day, and then when I was planning on a trip to the vet the next day he’d beat me to it and be fine within about 12 hours. I think it’s just occasional indigestion. Like us. And the hay and water makes it pass. When they get to be senior buns, you can tell if it’s gas….p.u.

Fluffybunny, I give her kale as a meal now that she’s used to it and made it clear she loves the stuff. The risk is gas. So you can usually tell if it doesn’t agree with them. But start out small, with it mixed in with other greens. I think the kale tends to last a bit longer, so you can build up if she likes it and feels OK.

yeah. I have been feeding it to them for a few days now and they seem to be fine. does it matter how much i give a day?

I never really give more than a handful, ie. about a cup, of any greens.

Yeah, I give our buns one cup of veggies at night and one cup in the morning for breakfast. I bought a gigantic bag of kale when we first got Oliver and fed a handful of it to him daily, and never had a problem. However, I’ve heard that kale can cause gas in very sensitive rabbits, so you might just want to monitor them for the first couple of feedings.

Sounds good Mocha. Kale is something that’s not available all the time and so not something they’ll get regularly. If you have it and they’re not experiencing any upset from it, then I don’t see any prob in continuing as you have been. Do they love it?

Thanks guys for your answers to my questions. I’m feeling much more settled about it now. @Mocha, I hadn’t seen that on HRS before. Good to know. Oh, and imagine that poor angora! Almost like a poodle.

                                      ^^^ haha i know!

When I set the plate of veggies down they both go for the Kale first so i think they like it. Every thing seems to be normal, eating, pooing.

i have another Q (sorry guys ): why is lulu peeing out side of her box? its not all the time, its just about once a week. and it is always right out side of the box. why wouldn’t she just go in the box? should i get a bigger box?
