So I feel absolutely horrible because it’s all my fault…long story short, I’m at my parents’ house with my two bunnies while we try to sell our house. They are not set up as well as we were at our house for free roam time so I’m still trying to figure it out.  It’s been a few days that we weren’t around and they’ve been pent up in their cages … so I was trying to give them both lots of time out (separately as they aren’t bonded) and I wasn’t watching Oreo for a minute…heard something…went to check on her and it looked like she was eating something.  But I looked at her mouth closely and it was all red on her bottom lip.  I’m thinking from the heat vent?  if she licked it or something like that??  I am so upset…it’s all because I didn’t supervise her  I’m a bit stressed out living here (without my husband…) in the first place and now I’m even more stressed with trying to keep the bunnies happy with free time out of their pens.  I guess I need to let them out one at a time and just decrease their playtime.

Should I be concerned immediately ?  Or just see how she does with eating, etc.??  It just happened and she’s hiding in her cottage now.  It’s not dripping blood or anything, just red…  Wow I’m so mad at myself….

First of all… please don’t beat yourself up like this! Everyone makes mistakes, and you certainly never meant for her to get hurt. You were simply trying to do the right thing by giving her lots of exercise and time out of her pen!

So please try not to be so angry with yourself. Think about it this way… I bet you wouldn’t want your mom or dad beating themselves up every time you stubbed your toe!

Yeah you’re absolutely right. I just tend to be oversensitive to .. um .. EVERYTHING. It’s a flaw of mine, but this whole situation just has me a mess. And it’s only been a few days!

On the good side, she just devoured a carrot in record time…so I can be reassured she’s not in much pain. So hopefully it’ll heal quickly. I checked again, not bleeding..just a cut .. poor thing.

Thanks LizzieKnittyBun…I need to chill sometimes …

Maybe run your fingers around the inside of her pen to check for any sharpness. She maybe pulling at it more than usual.
I hope your home sells quickly and this time is over soon. It’s naturally stressful but thankfully temporary. Stay positive.

Is it possible you can use this opportunity of a strange place to bond them? Just a thought…

Thanks guys, Oreo seems to be fine. Just a small cut on her lip, but hasn’t affected her otherwise.

Beka, you’re absolutely right … I really want to, I just need to get the guts to start again. I have only had them there a week and I wanted to see how they adjusted first before throwing more stress into the mix. But since they’ve adjusted far better than I could have expected, I need to start soon before they feel like they own the house…lol.

Just a side note, good news is, we got our first offer! and we only put the house on the market on Friday! So at least that’s encouraging!

Stress is good for bonding. This is one of the theories behind new, unfamiliar territory. Not only does neither “own” the space, but they need to turn to each other for comfort.

Yes, very true. Also, there is a lot more room in this house, so plenty of unknown areas left to use. I wonder how the basement would be? It’s a cement floor..not a finished basement. But if I needed to stress on the washer/dryer (which is in basement) I could move right to the ground? I would have to set up a pen though. I guess I could try the bathtub first. I’m used to living in a ranch where all areas were only a few steps away so they didn’t have to be transported very far… Also, when they are out of their pens, they are very interested in seeing the other one…Oreo will wait at the baby gate for Blu and vice versa…I hope this is out of good feelings for each other and not bad ones…

A bathtub would not be necessary where you are. The only reason behind using the bathtub is that it’s an area bunnies never go. Even if they go in the bathroom, they very rarely (never?) are in the tub.

I think a pen on top of a blanket in the basement could be a good spot to start.
