I have never bathed Lucy, except for when I first got her because she was kept in a FILTHY cage and her paws were all dirty. I only just barely put water in the sink (she was super tiny) got them a little damp, cleaned them, and kept her in a towel until she dried.
However, I’ve been exploring bunny yawn and bunny flop videos on youtube, and came across a few where people have their bunnies swimming. I remember I had a baby sitter as a kid whose bunny “loved” to swim. I would never do this to Lucy, as I think she’d give me the staaaaank eye for days and she’s just too big. She’d definitely struggle a ton and it’s just not in my nature to stress her. But what’s with these people? Do some bunnies genuinely enjoy swimming? I find it so odd.
Some bunnies do like water, but I think they are rare. Most just tolerate it, and because they do tolerate it, people say they “love it”. Bah. People suck ![]()
It’s kind of cute when I see a video of bunnies who look like they genuinely enjoy it, but omg, Lucy would poop in my slippers if I put her in a pool!
I don’t think those rabbits really enjoy swimming – it’s more of a survival thing than an enjoyment thing.
That makes sense, but part of me really wants to believe that they somewhat enjoy it, even though I’m probably wrong ![]()
Like Monkeybun said, some do enjoy water but like only maybe bathtub/sink running water that immediately drains. I don’t think any rabbits whether domestic or wild actually swim on their own. I think people on youtube who make their rabbits swim are cruel and dumb and should have their rabbit taken away. But that’s just my opinion.
I have given my bunnies butt baths. I know they didn’t enjoy it, but they had poopy butt and I think they felt better afterward, so I never got thumped at or anything. Eddie acted humiliated after. LOL But I only had to give them baths once.
I’ve seen this video of a rabbit just laying there in a pool. It made me disgusted watching it. So I stopped.
Speaking of water, my bunny just jumped out of her litter box and she landed in her water dish, knocking water onto the carpet and onto herself, LOL
I believe rabbits do not enjoy swimming and that it is cruel, and I also think people who are cruel ought to have their animals taken away. I think some buns like water – when Bisto was a baby he liked to play with the water in his bowl and sit in it, but I feel I can only say he enjoyed it because he chose to do it and could easily move away from the water if he didn’t like it. I don’t believe you can make a judgement about whether an animal enjoys something unless they have a choice as to whether or not they do it.
That’s a good point, Grumpy. Like I said, I’ve never really given it much thought, and I’d never do it to my bun. She’d whoop my backside for sure. All good points made by everyone ![]()
MissPinUp I had a question for you but didn’t want to change the topic on your thread so I sent it to you privately![]()
I wouldn’t dare put my bun in the water. He would freak out. I with everyone else. I don’t think they enjoy it really. Just tolerate it. I don’t bathe Baxter but if he got dirty I would just use a damp cloth of something to wipe him.
I must have an odd bunny. I have a kiddie pool in my yard for my dogs for the warmer months since we don’t get to go to the lake or beach often. When I take Pacey outside he makes a beeline for the pool. At first I thought it was from the heat but after he tried it when it was about 70F outside I knew it wasn’t the heat. I would never force my rabbits into water. Walter will barely drink out of a water bowl let alone hop into one.
Sonn, I stand corrected. Some buns do choose to swim, and therefore must like it! ![]()
Very interesting Sonn! I love the crazy random things buns do to surprise us ![]()

And that is the difference between you and some dummyhead noodlewomp brain on youtube who forces their bunny into a swimming pool and exclaims their bunny likes it. You offer a choice to Pacey and if he likes water then I am happy for Aqua bunny! It’s the rest of the goofballs out there that worry me.
BB I have to completely agree with you. That’s the reason I decided not to become an animal cop because the stupid things people do that’s not techniquly considered abuse (although would be to us) make me wanna kick them in the ‘nads…I can’t imagine if I saw cruelty as stated by the law…
I’ve only bathed bud a couple of times but that was because the people who were watching him while I was away at college let his cage get FILTHY and his paws were matted with urine and feces… He had stopped grooming completely…I mean really what was the point…would you take a bath if you lived in a mud hole? I was so angry with them. Now that he is up here with me he’s not had that problem. I don’t know why they thought it would be okay to let the cage get so dirty.. -sigh-
I forgot to mention. After bud’s bath I got bunny butt for several days after that. He did eventually forgive me but he was NOT happy about the bath.
Oh yeah definitely I have seen videos on youtube that I want to just run through the screen and rescue the bun. It is quite obvious to even a non bunny person when a rabbit isn’t happy. I never understand people who force their animals to do what us humans think would be ‘fun’.
