I’m looking for info on some good cage set ups for two buns. I don’t have a lot of room, so I’d like it to be able to be against the wall. I also have a regular bunny cage, and that could factor into it. I was thinking maybe two story.  Thanks.

If you can attach the pen onto the cage, that would increase their space. I wouldn’t use the cage if you only have the pen set-up in a 4×4 square because you don’t want to take away their horizontal space. You could also make an xpen shelf like we did for vertical space.

How does the shelf thing work?

This was one a member posted some time ago. Really good use of xpen. https://www.binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/a…fault.aspx

In this one you can see 2 lengths of pipe or dowel with shelf on top. ww.binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/af…fault.aspx

Or add a small area. Like Beka has done incorporating a hidey house/shelf.

You could make the pen rectangular with long side against wall and have a 2nd story. So smallish footprint but room to move for your pair.

Picture from member Osprey. You could either put in a 2nd level to cover most of area or just a half or quarter. You’d need to make a top for the pen.

Thanks so much! this is perfect!  The first one is my favorite. do you think if I used grids and zip tied them to make another floor/top it would be okay if I covered it with something, say cardboard, or a soft towel?

also, whats a good way to make stairs, or a way for them to go to the ext storey comfortably?

You could do that. It’d be similar to the levels in a NIC condo. You just need rigid support under like dowel rods. Cardboard or coroplast would be better over grids then just a towel. If it were me, I’d save the grids to make a pen top and make the level floor out of something like plywood & dowel. ;o)

are dowels absolutely necessary? I was planning on zip tying them down. per cube bottom, I was going to use two or more zip ties on each side, plus the ones to zip them together, plus zip tie them to the back  of the cage. is there anything else I could use, to really bolster it without dowel rods?

Oh, how did you sneak that extra post in there? I didn’t see that before. :p You can use grids for a ramp too I think. Or put a box near the entry like a step. So they can get on box then jump from there to upper level.

re: your qu about dowels, I’m a bit confused now – sorry. Are you doing this with an xpen then adding a level with grids? I have seen some people help support the suspended floor using some grids vertically. i.e between underside of the upper floor down to the pen floor. Though this makes the space more restricted below.

That’s what I’m thinking. though i’m sure it would be the same with just the NIC cubes.

I’m pretty excited to start on this!

and, to answer your first question, I think we posted at the same time.

I think using a pen would be quicker then putting together an entire NIC condo. A mix of the 2 would work well. One thing to keep in mind is to make it accessible for cleaning too.

So….have you started the new pen?! :o)

Cleaning is a big drawback to NIC condos. The beauty of a pen is that it can be taken apart and moved to clean under and around in only a minute. So definitely keep that in mind when building something with multiple levels… how easy is it to move and clean.

My friend made a second floor in the xpen for my bunny Lago recently. I posted a few pictures of it in another thread: https://www.binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/a…fault.aspx

My friend used some closet extender rods I had lying around to stabilize the hammock and tent. He used a hidey barn to keep the tube leading up to the hammock and tied yarn around the tube. Lago really likes this setup.
