I just recently bought a plastic toddler toy for Zeus.. and discovered tonight when I got home he had eaten a considerable piece of the toy.

I discovered the eaten toy at 5pm, so he did it sometime between 830am and 5pm.  It’s 945pm now.  He’s acting totally normal, pooping and peeing, eating.  His appetite is normal, he just ate his dinner greens and is eating his carrot  and pellets right now.  I gave him some extra greens to make sure everything passes ok, I hope that’s alright.  Just a little extra, not a ton.

When will I know he passed everything and is safe?  I think I’ll sleep with my head close to his cage tonight to keep an eye on him, and maybe wake up a few times overnight to check on him.  I’m seriously worried.

Oh dear… I swear, sometimes bunnies think they’re actually goats.

I could be wrong, but I’m fairly certain that if there is a problem you will know within 24 hours or so. Keep a sharp eye on him and if anything seems odd or different in his behavior, then I would bring him in to a vet. One of the things that can happen when bunnies don’t feel right is that they breathe very heavily or quickly. Keep an eye on his abdomen and see if he breathes more rapidly than normal.

Good luck and keep us posted!!

I’ll definitely keep an eye on his breathing.  He ate all his greens, his carrot, and some of his pellets.  He just pooped, and it looks normal.  Now he’s lounging.

Sadly, rabbits do not pass things they aren’t able to digest. So what he ate will just sit in his stomach. Unless it causes problems in his stomach, he probably won’t show any signs that he even ate the toy. You could take him to the vet for a check up just to be sure he’s ok. I don’t think there’s a whole lot they can do unless it causes a blockage. Then they could possibly operate to remove it but that’s an invasive and risky surgery.

Wow, I’d be very alarmed if my bunnies ate something plastic. 0_o Does it seem like he chewed small pieces off or were they larger ones, can you tell? How large was the toy originally and how much is left?

I think a leader should be alerted to this thread if they haven’t already.

I know my buns tend to nibble at their litterboxes, but they usually spit the stuff out on the floor. He actually swallowed the pieces?

I would already be packed and on my way to the vet, but that’s because I am so far away from mine, I can’t wait too long to take them in if they are possibly going to be ill.

Vibes that Zeus either passes this stuff safely or that he’s got the chewed parts hidden under the carpet somewhere for you to find. (((((((vibes))))))))

He probably ate about a business card’s worth, if I had to guess.  I can’t find any plastic bits left in his cage, but maybe he hid them somewhere I can’t find?

Luckily there is an emergency vet about 20 minutes from my apartment, that’s open from 6pm-8am.  I’ve got their address and number on my fridge.  I’m going to stay up late to keep an eye on him, and then set my alarm to wake up a few times overnight to check on him.

I’m thinking the fact that he’s eating and acting normally, as well as pooping and peeing ok, is a good sign.

You could always call the ER vet and see what they advise you to do. Although I’m pretty sure they’d have you bring him in, but I’d rather be on the safe side either way if it was me.

Geesh, some rabbits will eat anything….Just ask member Digxmexnow as her bunny, Frankie, has eaten the craziest things– always gives her a scare, but he always seems to have a stomach of steel.    A business card’s worth of plastic is a pretty good sized amount. If this happened to Jack, and he was acting normal, I would still call my trusted vet first thing in the morning and let her know what happened. She would either suggest I watch for digestive upset signs or bring him in.

Obviously, if you see current issues, then you’d have to seek out an Emergency Vet. (You could also call the emergency vet to get his/her advice)

Edited to Add: I found this answer from Dana Krempels who was replying to a question about their bunny eating plastic. it might be helpful for you.

Am I wrong or do they not pass things they can’t digest? I can’t remember if I read that somewhere or was told. But I just want to know if I was given wrong information.

Yeah I might give my small exotics vet a call in the morning.  I really don’t know how much I’d trust what the emergency vets would have to say, as they primarily do just dogs and cats.  They WILL do buns in an emergency, but they don’t specialize in them.

Right now he’s trying to doze and keeps glaring at me for peeking in on him every 5 seconds and disturbing him.   He ate some hay, has pooped 3 times since 5, and peed once.  Appetite is still good, I’m feeding him little bits of greens every hour or so to try and keep that gut moving.

My rabbit has eaten about 20 pounds of linoleum over his lifetime and he’s never really had any issues from it. Don’t worry about it.

Sounds good that he’s eating and eliminating. And oh boy, do I know that sour look you get when they think they are fine and you think they are not and you keep checking them! Mimzy gives me that stinkeye ALL the time!

Continued vibes that he does okay. Keep us updated. And let us know what your vet says if you call them.

Yeah I might tear apart his enclosure tomorrow when he’s out and see if I can find any bits.  I’m still planning on checking on him throughout the night, I might leave a few bites of carrot next to my bed to give to him to make sure he continues to have an appetite through the night as well.

I’m pretty sure I’ll call the vet in the morning, even just as a future reference if something like this ever happens again.  Hopefully it won’t!

I would definitely call the vet that is open early this morning and get him in right away. That is a large piece of plastic, and unless you find it, and even if it’s a small bit in his stomach, I think it should be looked at for potential blockage if it moves. Very glad he’s eating and pooing still.
Might want to redo some of the habitat to be less tasty, or switch to one of the biodegradable cat litter pans that are disposable paper based, just in case.

Well he did just fine last night.  I checked on him every 2 hours through the night, which he wasn’t too happy about.  He kept looking at me like, “Really?  Again?  It’s 4am woman, let me sleep!”

Gave him his morning pellets, he ate them fine.  He pooped twice through the night, and I’m really starting to think that he perhaps chewed the bits and spit them back out somewhere.  His poops look totally normal, his appetite’s totally normal, and so is his behavior.  It’s been.. 15.5 hours now with no symptoms.

I just called the vet.  They said to do pretty much what I’ve been doing, to watch for any signs of distress, make sure he keeps pooping, watch to make sure his poops are normal, and to watch for a sore abdomen/belly.  They couldn’t give me a time frame where it should be “safe” after (x) amount of hours, though.  When do you guys think I’ll be in the clear?

Hmm.. well I don’t know.. I’ve never offered Zeus some crepe… hahahaha! .

Crepescular means they’re most active at dawn and dusk, and sleep in the middle of the day and middle of the night.

I’m at work for a few hours.. then a quick stop at home to check on Mr Zeus.. then to the barn for an hour or so.  I spent the whole morning and early afternoon watching him, so far, so good!

Just thought I’d post one more update; it’s been over 24 hours now and Zeus is doing a-ok!  I THINK we’re out of the woods, but I’ll continue to keep an eye on him. .

Thanks to everyone for the help!

I went through that with mine too. Their brush has a plastic handle that also has a rubber grip. They have both taken pretty big bites out of it and swallowed it. That was several months ago and they were fine then and are now Rabbits will sample anything. I’m glad your bun is okay I wouldn’t worry about it anymore than you already have.

Oh, someone posted to watch for fast breathing. Rabbits breath fast normally.

Rabbits are not nocturnal. Mine are active all day. More so in the morning and at dusk but still active all day

Rabbits are twilight creatures, and are most active around dusk and dawn. If you ever watched them at night, you’d see that they do sleep some parts of the night as well. The rabbits I have had or boarded would sleep mostly from about 9:00 a.m. till 3:00 p.m. so I wonder if rabbits are able to change their biorhythm since you say yours are active all day, Nibbles. I think this topic is worth discussing separately.
