  So, after a week of having the HRS people asking us all kinds of disturbing personal questions before we could adopt, my family and I decided to just see if there were any rabbits at the other nearby shelter – the one we adopted Mr. Bunny from.
  
  They sure did have bunnies!
  
  At Petsmart, there were three bunnies from that shelter. There was one small female named Smokey. She was caught in the Boulder fires. Apparently, her old bonded bunny friend got stuck in the burning house, but somehow, she managed to survive. That’s why the shelter named her Smokey.
  
  All we had to do was fill out some forms and talk with the shelter owner for 2 minutes…so easy after trying to deal with the HRS.
  
  Smokey – now renamed Ms. Rabby Rabrab Rabbit – is a mostly-brown agouti bunny. I’m not entirely sure what her weight is, but I’d guess around 3-5 pounds. She’s only a year old, and she’s a rex mix, so she might still grow a little bit. She’s an incredibly sweet bunny – she sat in my lap for most of the hour’s drive home!
  
  The way I have the bunnies set up, both are free-run, but they can only see eachother with cage bars in between them. Mr. Bunny was afraid of Ms. Rabbit at first, but now he’s slightly obsessed with seeing her. I’ll start bonding them in a few days.
  
  I promise I’ll have pics in a few hours. Beat me with a carrot if I don’t.

  Congratulations!!! I hope her and Mr B hit it off. So sad about what she’s been thru and losing her mate that way. At least she hasn’t been in the shelter overly long. Looking forward to seeing the pictures… Carrots a-ready.

  She loves her boxes! (just for comparison, Mr. Bunny is about as tall as the first level of boxes in that pic)

  I’m sorry you didn’t have a positive experience with HRS. They have seen so many rabbits in and out of shelters, they want to be thorough and find the very best home for each and every rabbit. If there were issues with the questions they were asking (or the answers you were giving) then that is their prerogative not to adopt to you. Some shelters are not as stringent with their requirements, but they may also end up seeing many of the rabbits they adopt out returned because owners are not prepared for what a rabbit needs.
  
  Smokey is a gorgeous bunny. Congrats!

  I’m also curious about the very involved questions. Sounds like the two shelters need a happy medium for both.

  I know what you mean about the involved question – I use to be an HRS Educator/Fosterer and did rabbit rescue for a long time. I was never as involved or nosy if the person had a rabbit already or had previously had a rabbit that they cared (inside only) but I understand why they are this way – they feel they have a stewardship to the rabbit and an obligation to find them the best possible home. I encouraged owners to rescue those rabbits in shelters too – so many rabbits needing homes.

  Fluffy, Ms Rabbits colour is puzzling me! lol It does resemble agouti but she doesn’t have the tan around the eyes or nostrils, nor the white belly from what I can tell. Is she the same colour on her belly? Her fur appears chocolate tipped…It’s really pretty!

  jersey, she does have very interesting coloring! Her belly is gray. I was actually thinking that she had a chocolate tipped coat, but I’ve only heard of silver and gold tipped bunnies. If you blow on her coat, you can see that the hairs are gray with light or dark brown tips.

  Congrats on the new addition! Glad she’s going to have a great home after what she’s been through….just found it funny though that you have a REW and an agouti like i do and I have another rabbit named Smokey….lol, just a funny coincidence! Heres a pic of mine together!
