Today I drove a hour and a half to get the bun I was talking about I got him in the carrier and out of the cage he was in that was waaaaay to small the lady that “saved” his life was nice but looked overwhelmed with 47 rescue dogs and 19 rescue horses and 1 rescue bunny. So I was glad to get the lil guy out of there to my dismay his condition is horrible!! under weight, over grown nails, verrrrrry thirsty, little bit of crusty ears, and one over grown tooth
so basicaly I rescued this bun from the rescuer! poor baby
I dont think he would have lasted another week! he already has a appointment made for the vets this week to get looked over. He is so sweet and calm and was barely stressed with the drive home withing 10 minutes in his new cage with all his toys he was cleaning himself and chugging down water all they were giving him was pellets so I dont was to shock his system with a bunch of veggies I will introduce them to him slowly. I have a few questions if you guys could help me with I would be soo happy!
How do I get him to gain weight quickly but safely?
Till I get him to the vets what should I do about his ears? they are not severely crusty but are kinda funky
a friend of my dads was over when I got home and he use to raise rex rabbits and said to put vitamin E oil on his krusty parts of his ears to help with that is that right?
With all that that being said I think this lil guy deserves a name!
Im stuck between these three names Basil, Berry, Stitch what do you think?
I dont know why it does it but sorry if the pictures are huge again!

I like Stitch! His nails kind of make him look like Stitch at the moment lol. He’s sooo adorable though
I will let the more experienced people answer your technical questions. Good for you though for rescuing him!
He’s really cute, good job saving him!
The dry skin in his ears could be mites and your vet will have to help you there. It’s key that you treat that quick, they can get out of hand.

Is that the cage you have him in now? If so cover the entire bottom so his feet are not on any wire at all until you can get a better cage made. Rex’s are prone to sore hocks if you have them on wire. Sorry if this is not the cage he is in now and this is not needed to be said.
Sweetness! He looks good considering bu yes, some things need attention. Those nails – yikes. They probably don’t help his ears either when he goes scratching them.
The vit E oil sounds good for providing some relief. I would not be attempting to clean the ears at all. If it is ear mite, it can be quite painful to have them cleaned so let the vet or tech do this.
It’s hard to tell from the pictures about his weight. Rexes are prone to weight gain and sore hocks (due to thinner fur padding on feet). So you’re in an ideal position to get
him up to the ideal weight and maintain it there. Going the other way with too much weight gain will cause problems. I think just a good normal diet would get him slowly putting the weight on. You might want to have a fecal test done to see there are no parasites contributing to his weight loss.
Looking forward to seeing more of the little guy!
Duh! I didnt even think of his nails causing the ear issue! lol (blonde moment) that very well could be the cause they are not oozy or sensitive or hot to the touch so Im keeping my fingers crossed that its not mites!
as for the weight loss I really think it has to do with him not being fed enough, the cage he was in had no free access to pellets, and a small dish for water he drank 6 ounces in the last half hour he seems much more content and is munchin on his pellets. He is a true sweet heart! he hops right to the cage door when I come up to it! and lets me touch him all over without a hint of being skittish. The cage he is in now is the temporary cage till I can get ahold of grid cubes or somthing like that any suggestions?. Thanks for the info about the sore hocks! I will be lining the entire bottom with cardboard and soft squishy stuff for him! lol Litter training is on hold for now I want to clean him up and getting feeling and looking better first. I couldnt make up my mind on the name so his full name is Basil Berry! lol Basil for short still kinda iffy on it though who knows I might change it again! lol Gah! I love him already! and I have only owned him for 5 hours!
I’m so happy to see you rescued this beautiful bun. I too adopted a rabbit that was underweight and have had my battles already. He is on a pellet and hay diet only due to his vets recommendation. I feed him his pellets according to the House Rabbit Society guidelines and he gets all the hay he wants. He is gaining weight at a nice slow healthy pace. He gained 4 oz in the past week. Putting the weight back on him slowly with a healthy diet is the best way to go. The vet can also give you more info on how to feed him. And Basil Berry is an adorable name!
He is a beautiful rex .Congrats on your new love
Im so happy you found him and rescued him.Im sure hes very greatful for a new Mom who loves him and wants to give him the best life he can have. What a lucky bun! Good luck with the ear issue hopefully its just the horridly long nails thats doing that to them .Keep us posted and let us know what your vet says .
If it is ear mites, it’s not the end of the world. Don’t worry. All they do is put a little medicine behind his ears, and it clears right up in a week or two. You don’t have to do a thing… the vet does it all.
What a CUTE little guy! I like the name Basil : )
He’ll put on weight in time. You can cause more issues by trying to tweak his diet too much to make him gain. I wouldn’t do any home remedies until he’s seen by the vet. Also, have the vet’s office trim his nails the first time.
It’s tempting to want to criticize her, but… the important thing is that she cared for him while she had him, listed him for adoption, and now you have him. It sounds like she’s not a bunny rescue, so it’s very possible she just DIDN’T KNOW what to do with him, and I’d be very thankful she did what she could to help him.

I agree with what you are saying I was just a little peeved that she lied about him being fully vetted and ther is no way a vet would let a rabbit leave his office looking like that, and her not having at least water in his cage to drink but I am very greatful she took him from the pound he was 4 hours away from being euthenized!
he will be all cleaned up soont he has no life threatening issues just mostly cosmetic except the ears. my dad calls him Scraggly at the moment lol
he already looks better this morning! hes eating like a horse which Im realeived to see!
He’s adorable! Congrats on your new bun!!!
Congratulations, he’s a beautiful boy.
The pictures are hard to tell if he’s underweight or not. Rex’s are prone to being overweight, so I am sure putting weight on him won’t be an issue. Let your Vet give you some ideas on that.
The nails are long, but since Rex’s have so short fur on their feet, I find it just makes the nails look even worse then on a regular coated rabbit. I call them Freddy krueger clawns when they are so long LOL… I’ve had to trim may a rabbit with neglected nails.
For the litter box, you may not want to start ‘training’ him to it, but i woudl definetly put it in the cage with the hay. Get him used to it. Some rabbits just know and pick it up so quickly.
Goodluck with the Vets this wee, and congratulations and a beautiful little bunny!
For one, i’d replace that cage with a solid bottom. Sore hocks are a nono. After a visit to the vet and some normal feeding, that bun should be perfect.
