My Bun is being bonded right now. I was gone for two weeks, and I found his cage a mass of bunny poop and pee. He didn’t use his box once, and he seems intent on keeping it this way. what can I do to fix this?

Maybe try complete clean of his cage, then set it up again and keep him in it more. When you see him using the box give him praise. When he doesn’t, just clean up and put everything in his litterbox. It could be due to bonding but it might also be because you were away too. They don’t like change too much. If it wasn’t due to this, then I’m afraid it might continue until you finish bonding. But the “back to basics” littertraining won’t hurt to do anyway.

I know this sounds a bit crazy, but my bunny has a little pan in her cage and then I shred yellow pages (recyle old ones, ask your neighbors for thiers too) into a larger box , ( I actually use the bottom of smaller cage so I do not have to worry about the carpet) for when Izzy is out of her cage. I will be honest she use the yellow pages to play in and potty in! Each way I clean out the yellow pages box and use vinegar to wipe out the bottom. Because of the extra box, she is much better in her cage and better on my carpet! I clean out her cage box daily or at least every other day, depending on how it looks.

The other thing is I use I strange things for litter pans, I have spend too much in hospitals and use the plastic bins they put all the toileteries in for litter pans. They are square and my bunny can just jump and do her thing. Since they are free when I visit the hospital (I have surgery this week) I never worry about them. Maybe look for a cheap plastic bucket with all sides, versus those triangle things at pet stores. Look in the kid area, for something cheap.

So, I have to ask, did you leave her alone with a pet sitter for 2 weeks? I bet it will just a few weeks for her to understand you are back and will not leave her again. I have found that Izabella my bunny, really needs personally attention daily, and we as a family have decided if we go on vacation we are taking her, as we hate to see what would happen to her if she did not see us for a week or more. Traveling might be hard on her, but we think it would be better to be with us versus not. We are not really travelers so its not a huge deal.

            Good luck.

That’s funny, I use those plastic bins from the hospital for Bun-Bun’s litter pans too! They would be too small for a bigger bunny though.

I have been having the same problem with my rabbit, who out of nowhere decided my whole house was his toilet. It’s getting better now since I let him out in shorter spurts. Your rabbit was probably annoyed you were gone and he was getting less attention, good luck with the re-training.
