My rabbit, Krimpet, prefers to eat hay only when sitting in it. If there isn’t enough room for him to sit (and poop and pee) then he eats much less. I don’t minding providing him a box to eat in, it’s just that he ends up wasting a lot of hay because it gets saturated with pee. Does anyone have any good hay feeding ideas, hay boxes/bins?

        Thanks,

        Eileen

I only put hay right in the very back of the litter box and leave the front half with Carefresh litter for the peeing and poos.

When I got Eyore from HRS here in Ga. They explained to me that lining the litter box encourages them to eat while they are doing their business. Eyore sometimes is in his for quite awhile eating hay. It does make hay go bad but I think during litter training hay it the thing that gets them to go in there to begin with. I usually put a fresh thin layer on top of old everyday plus I have a basket of hay nxt to his litterbox he can choose to eat out of if he wants. But mostly he likes to eat it out of his littebox. Most bunnies will use one side more than others too.

I suspend a hay bin outside her cage on the bars, where half is next to the litter pan and the rest of it hangs next to a clear spot in the cage where she can opt to sit outside the litter pan. She pulls it down or munches from wherever she’s sitting before it hits the ground. I also put some below the bin in the actual litter pan, but maybe you don’t need to put so much but just have it be the “sweet” spot where Krimpet can find some in the pan and some in the bin. You can take the older hay that’s left in the bin and move that into the litter pan, then put fresh hay in the bin on top of it.

There are some nice hay bins to choose from. Some are made of willow so are edible themselves. Check out the rabbit site stores, and take a look at the photos in the habitats section for ideas of different bins you could try.

I just replied and the server lost it.
The short version: I have had good luck with a suspended hay bin the hangs partly above the litter pan. The older hay can go into the litter pan, but the fresh new stuff can be eaten from the bin while standing in the litter or standing just outside the litter box. It keeps more clean that way. Mine hangs outside the cage so the hay is pulled through the openings.

See pix in the habitats section or check out hay bins in the bunny stores online.

I learned to put the hay in the litter box. I put a layer of yesterday news litter down, then put hay on top of it. Solved most of the problem. Lolli still hasn’t understood yet that she also needs to poop in the litter box. lol

I used to think this was a form of wasting hay also but in truth, this is the second purpose of hay in a rabbit’s world. Hay is part of litter just as it is part of their diet.

And on the flip side… If you get a good price on hay, it won’t be an issue that some gets wasted. Do you have a way to buy hay in bulk boxes or in bale form? My best piece of advice is: don’t pay “retail” prices for hay in small plastic bags. It’s a major money waster.

I figure I am “wasting” as much as hay as I did before, maybe even less because they’d never eat all their hay in the hay box so I’d have to dump it. And now I don’t fill the litter box. I just put enough out to cover the litter, with adding a bit more once in a while before I change the litter.

Thanks for all the advice. I am now in the process of a test. I have a litterbox with a hay rack suspended above it and another litter box which is half hay and half litter. So far, the litter box with hay rack is winning…
