Okay, so I just discovered that my bunny has a mild case of fur mites and have scoured the internet looking for solutions and have his treatment down no problem, but all the advice about cleaning the bunny’s cage given for all these apparently typical people who keep rabbits confined in a cage all the time isn’t helping me any…

I can clean his cage and the bathroom it’s in thoroughly with bleach water, no problem. But what do I do about the carpets and the furniture in the house where he spends most of his time?  Vacuum up every shred of fur I can, obviously… I read that steam cleaning is not advised and can make the problem worse. So what do I do to make sure once he’s treated the house is rid of them as well?  He spends hours every day laying on cloth-covered chairs, and more hours sprawled out on the carpet. I have to treat those areas somehow!

        Help!!

This topic has come up a bit lately. Darned if I can find the discussion though! There doesn’t seem to be a good “How To” guide available. I think with House Rabbits, the cleaning of the environment needn’t be too extreme. Washing any rugs, bedding and bowls from the rabbits cage and a thorough vacuum would be adequete. All the House Rabbit Society recommends is a thorough clean after each treatment to remove and eggs that might be shed.

I think just wash what you can and vacuum the rest and you should be right. As they’re a parasite, I don’t think they can survive long once off the host animal.

Have you looked at diatamasceaous earth? It’s non toxic and works on any bug that doesn’t fly-perhaps it’s an option?

Use food-grade if you use diatomaceous earth. I have this stuff and sprinkle it around the window sills to help cut down on bugs.

I haven’t replied cuz I didn’t know what to say.   Hmm that earth thing you mentioned.  Never heard of it.  Hope it helps.

All I know about mites is we humans here had to wash everything in hot water.  Our pillows, bedding living room pillows etc.  It worked though. Don’t know much about demiting bun areas  though

If fur mites are like ear mites, it’s not as painful as it could be (not like bedbugs or lice). One of mine got a BAD case some time ago. I immediately scoured their cage when I got home. The emergency vet, who was not an exotics expert, had me in a panic so I did throw out the old bedding. I think now a good wash would have been fine. I vacuumed like crazy. The sick one got a dose of Revolution at the vet, and I took the healthy one in for a checkup and a dose too. They’ve both been fine since.

I’ve never heard of that earth stuff either, but it sounds awesome for pest control. I hate having crawlies indoors!

Thanks so much, everyone, the diatomaceous earth (food grade!) sounds like a lifesaver! Have some ordered and can’t wait to be bug-free!!

Just be careful with it around your eyes and any animals. It’s very drying. It’s will probably come with all the various care of use info – I hope.
