Is it possible to teach bunny to follow you.  I would like eyore to follow me downstairs instead of having to carry him esp since he tolerates it but does not really like it.  I am sure this would be a process.

Has he tried the stairs yet to go up and down on his own? Usually if you leave them to do this, they will eventually go down on their own.

No i took a bunny 101 class at the house rabbit society and the girl who taught it said a bunny would not go down stairs if they had not gone up them first. Is this true? I tried to get him to go up once but he wouldn’t budge but he was very new to the house. I am going to try again. I see him getting more comfortable with his surroundings every day.

Hmmm…not entirely sure of that. I guess I’ve never noticed when my rabbit went up and down the stairs.

I guess then I would let him try to go up and down the stairs so that he knows he can. Does your stair have a landing or is it just straight up and down?

                Also are your stairs carpeted?

Why don’t you try this – the 5 steps that go in another direction, that has a landing correct – basically it’s a landing that can either go up the stairs or down the stairs if I’m picturing your stair set up correctly…if you put him there and let him decide to go either up or down then you will at least have the stairs out of the way and he will know he can go up or down.

I think it is possible, my one year old rabbit chomper follows me through out the house, i go right…he goes right, i go left…he goes left, i go outside he goes outside, i lay down in the couch he jumps right onto the couch. He also comes to me when I call him, but i think i managed to do this by always having a treat in my hand when he comes over when i call, after a while he just got used to comig to me when i call even if I have no treat in hand, i had to teach him to do this since he has complete access to my backyard and it would take forever to try and find him. so now i just call for him and he comes running, lol, he looks like he is flying through the air when he runs towards me. It was easier with my 5 month old Zoe sice she would see Chomper run towards me and she would follow, she also follows me. So yeah it is possible, it just takes practice and patience, Oh and i have stairs in my house too, their cages are upstairs where the bedrooms are and in the morning before i leave to work i open both cages and they follow me downstairs to the back yard. Try the treat thing it will probably work, i would do it with a raisin or a tiny little piece of banana or some cilantro (chomper’s weakness).

Yeah, I think the main thing is to have some sort of food or treat as a reward when he does go up or down the stairs. MJ used to look at me like I was stupid when I called him, but after lots and lots of work, he finally associated me calling him with a treat and now he comes when called (usually). Rabbits will definitely follow you, especially as they become more comfortable with you and their surroundings.

I would try each direction with a small reward at the top and bottom. Raisin, baby carrot – something he can smell and know that if he gets there, it’s his.
He just needs a reason that HE wants to go up or down.

You might consider putting a no-slip area rug at the foot of the stairs on the hardwood. This might encourage him to go to that area and explore the steps. Also, is there an area rug in his exercise space? It’s good to have at least one or two so the bunny doesn’t always have to be on the hardwood.

We had a rug under coffee table but our dog would pee on it so we got rid of it. Our office has carpet and he goes in there a lot. We keep the litter box in there. He also likes to lay in the breakfast area that has linoleum. I tried to lure him on the couch with green pepper but he would not fall for it. He was debating though.

Not true on the stairs – Koji went down without ever going up, and has never gone up but has gone down twice now. But, he’s very brave and exploratory.

As for teaching them how, I can’t help, I actually didn’t want him to try at all! I was relying on him not to because we have hardwood floor stairs and I feel they are too slippery to be safe.

I tried to see if he would go up the 5 after our landing would not budge. Maybe I will try the down.
