         Hi,

I have a Flemish Giant, in Florida. He’s a little over a year old and only 9.5lbs (expected to be 22 fully grown). He’s had bunch of respritory infections these past couple of months and upon the docs recommendation I had an ultrasound done to see why the constant problem, the doc says that he has a nodule on the left atrium of his heart and that is what is causing the fluid buildup in his lungs. Well we did a CBC and found out that it isn’t an infection, its a heart defect. So he has me giving Bernie Lasix to help with the fluid in his lungs and Enalapril to help the heart. It looked like things were getting better, but now he isn’t eating any food. He’ll eat hay, and the tops of carrots but nothing else. He’s still drinking water, but won’t eat any of his pellets! He’s always been a picky eater but he won’t even eat his favorite treat, dry oats! His poops are soo small and loose looking! I don’t know what to do about the food. The doc said to take him off the enalapril, but he’s been off if for two days and still won’t eat. whenever i let him out of his cage all he will do is chew on the carpet and furniture but he never did it this much before. And I think i might be stressing him out by giving him the lasix meds. he used to just take them out of my hand, I’d just put it ontop of some oats, since he’s never like juices or certain fruits. but now i’ve had to resort to wrapping him in a towel to give it to him with some ensure. I don’t know what to do. DOes anyone have any tricks to get him to eat? or does anyone maybe know how to help? i don’t want to loose my bunny. its getting very expensive to keep taking him to the vet with no answers.

Hi Bunny Hunny, I see you’ve posted this twice – I am going to move it to the Q&A section and delete the other post – I will PM you as well.

Is he losing any weight? Or is he maintaining his weight?

not yet, its been almost 4 days, no noticable weight loss, but i know that they shouldn’t not eat in 24 hrs. hes just not eating the food, normally he’ll bump me ifi forget to refill his food, but now hes not eating it, only hay and the tops of carrots. not even the carrot bodies

Have you tried critical care? I do wonder if the medications are altering the tastes of his food.

I find that when rabbits don’t feel good that pellets are usually the first thing they stop eating.

Have you tried any herbs like dill or basil or some kale?

Keeping food in him is important, even if it’s some treats and other favorites (or Critical Care as Sarita mentioned), you want to keep the bunnies guts moving all the time.
The meds he is on, are they known to cause digestive upset?

I would treat this sorta like Stasis at the moment, and just do the fluids and critical care just to make sure. If even after a couple days of that his appitite and poops have not gotten better, i would suggest you have the Vet look him over again. If your not happy with him, I would look up a rabbit savvey Vet to get a second opinion from.

                  How is his activity level?
