        Hi there…

As some of you might remember, about a year or so ago one of my rabbits, Dylan, went into GI Stasis. It was quite a fight for his life but he eventually pulled through.

Maybe I’m just being a paranoid mom… But Dylan’s was acting a little funny in the evening… Kept sitting down in a flop then getting up again to flop down again. Eventually he moved to his litter box, where he got up and down several times. (He never sleeps in litter box, for one thing) To me, he clearly seems uncomfortable.

Just so you know, he DID eat today. Ate part of his nightly salad, some pellets. He defintely pooped today, as I cleaned his litterbox in the morning and when I came home from work this evening he had pooped. I even saw him eating some cecals this morning.

He is also undergoing a molt, so he’s probabing ingesting a lot of fur… Hard to keep up with brushing…

Could he have some gas? Am I just crazy? Could it be the beginning of stasis? It’s 11pm, and it was 10pm when I noticed him acting funny, but I’m not sure if it’s serious enough to take to the vet? I was thinking of maybe getting that baby gas reliever the vet told me to get last time, or could that be a bad idea?

        Any help is appreicated…

Also, I just heard him making a mess of litterbox, so he may be starting to feel better, but I thought I’d post anyways.

I think having the infant gas med on hand is a good idea. You can’t overdose them on it and it’s worth a try if it helps with gas. Dosing formula is 1-2 ml (simethicone 20mg/ml strength). You can give a dose every hour for the first 3 hours, then every 8hrs after the intial 3 doses.

I’ve seen both mine this way and my lop acted exactly like you say, flopping, getting up and flopping again. He breathed faster and had wide eyes.  I couldn’t tell if it was gas or something else. I gave simethicone but went to vet next day. I never knew if something else was going on (like a urinary infection) that caused him not to eat. Sometimes stasis is secondary and gas is secondary to the gut slow down too. The main thing is he’s eating and pooping now (Phew!) but watch him in his litterbox for any discomfort there.

My mini rex will sit in her litterbox if she’s uncomfortable. She’s also not a litterbox sleeper, she does her business and gets out, so if I see her lounging in there, that’s a big sign something is up.

I would continue to watch him today.

Simethicone won’t hurt but it’s not an end cure all for everything. I guess all you can do is just watch him closely and see how he is.

Well, I woke myself up at 6am since I know that’s usually when he’s active and he’s looking a lot better. There was a lot of poops in his litterbox (and he wasn’t lounging there anymore) and he had finished his nightly salad (he usually takes his sweet time, but when he had started to act weird in the evening, he still had some of his salad left). He also took some treats too.

I’ll keep an eye on him still, of course. But still, I wonder what was up in the evening…?

Maybe he was just having an off day or he was tired. Don’t you wish they could talk!

My bunny (Lionhead) is molting as well and 3 days ago he went into a brief stasis. He was fine and happy and even ate quite a bit not more then one hour before and then he already in shock, starting to get hypothermia and inflating up. So yes it can be very fast. Few months before it lasted near two weeks (mostly because of incorrect treatment at the start). This time he pulled back in two hours after I gave him 1CC of paraffin oil and 1 more CC 3 hours later. In both cases gas was the result of the problem but not the cause.

What you can do is reduce his pellets till he is done with the molt to see if he will eat more hay. A belly massage (not a rub) might help keep things moving but make sure not to be too rough or too gentle (as it wont help much). It can be hard to tell what is good and what’s not but when I do it just right Shmoo will start licking the carpet like silly .

My guys somtimes do the uncomfortable flops over and over when they have a bit of gas. It’s good you are watching, just in case it had got worse.
