When Eddie and Lolli ate some bubble gum, I called the vet about it.  Well they hadn’t ever heard of a rabbit eating bubble gum before so they had to research it.  They told me that it would pass thru their system and might cause diahrrea or hard poops.  Neither happened and both were fine.

However, the vet was mostly concerned about the gum not being whitening gum.  The whitening gum ingredients are TOXIC to ALL animals.  There was one specific ingredient they named but I can’t pronoune it or spell but I’ll try – xorbital.  ????   I also can’t find any info online for some reason.  But my vet said their office has treated many pets who’ve gotten into whitening gum.  Obviously not rabbits except mine (naturally).  But I just wanted to share this information with everyone.

That’s good to know – thanks for the info. I didn’t even know that there was a tooth whitening gum.

That’s good to know. I’m glad you shared it.
I just noticed whitening gum in the grocery store for the first time last week while looking for a sugarless brand I like. I remember thinking it might not react well with my whitening toothpaste.

Chances are none of it is good for either of us. We need Beka, our dental expert. Yoo hoo – Beka!

Xylitol, and yes its quite toxic to animals. which is why I was more then a little confused when I saw a daily dental treat for dogs with Xylitol listed at the priamrly ingredient! and THAT folks is why you should always resreach and just because the package says its safe, doesnt mean it is! and the kicker? the treat was sold in a VET supply store!!

Xylitol is a fantastic thing! For humans! It is a natural sweetener, but it’s lower in calories AND can reduce tooth decay! If you can’t brush immediately following a meal, it’s suggested that you chew a piece of xylitol gum. It will increase saliva production, helping to clean up your mouth and prevent an acid attack on your enamel.

I don’t know anything about the toxicity to animals, but that’s interesting and helpful to know.
