Yikes … in 2 weeks, Chessie (my first & eldest) will be spayed
I’m worried about a couple of things, and welcome any suggestions/advice on my worries

**Litterbox: I’m using Sunfresh (paper pellet bedding) & hay in her box.**

What’s best to use while she’s recovering?
I don’t want the paper bedding/or hay to stick to her incision.

Should I roll a towel (like a ramp) to help her get in/out the box?
I plan to remove the upper half of the current litterbox.

**House-keeping: I know I have to keep her area super clean.**

How do I clean her area while she’s in it?
Like the day after her surgery…

Should I use newspaper (instead of a blanket) for her flooring?
I want her to be comfortable.

        I’m DREADING this whole thing
        I love my Chessie!

Honestly, the way you have it currently set up looks perfectly fine to me. The main thing is to keep everything as normal as possible. She will already be stressed from the whole ordeal and messing with her home could stress her out more. Just think like she’s you – if you were having major surgery, how would you like your home to be? lol Maybe that’s dumb and corny.

The only concern i would have is if she likes to lay/sleep in her litter box. Although I have no clue what do about that as mine don’t do that so it’s never been an issue for me. But others will have advice on that for you though.

For cleaning her pen area, is it possible to just move the pen to a different area and keep her in it for the short period you are cleaning and then move her and the pen back? If I remember correctly, that’s what I did with Lolli.

Eddie came to me fixed, so I didn’t have worry about that with him. I had to get Lollipop spayed and for the first day/night, she just layed around. By night, she was eating and drinking a little. The next morning, she was back to her normal self probably due to the pain medication they gave me. lol But I still had to keep her confined so she wouldn’t do anything to the stitches. But I kept everything the same and made sure her pen area remained cleaned and she was fine.

Awe! Don’t worry. She will be ok! I know it’s hard though. I’m a crazy worrier about mine. I took Eddie to the vet because he wasn’t eating his pellets or hay very much and I thought there was a problem with his teeth. The vet looked at him then looked at me like i was crazy and told me his teeth are perfect. LOL So yeah – crazy worrier.

Do you remember where you got your litter box from? I have one like it and it is the only “cat” litter box they will use. Only I have cannot remember where I found it and it’s definitely not at petsmart. lol Just wondering if you knew!

I agree … keeping “home” as normal as possible is what I’d prefer

Chessie doesn’t sleep or hang out in the litterbox. She usually sleeps in an attached cage, which I will keep detached during recovery time (as to keep her from jumping too much).

Her pen area can be moved, but it has no solid bottom … I’ll be afraid to move/touch her during the first few days. I guess I can figure out a gentle way to coax her into her carrier without hurting her?? I could just slide everything over (w/her in it), but I might frighten her that way LOL!

Thanks for your suggestions bunbuns1 … I super appreciate it all

That cat litterbox came from Target … I bought 2 at the time
I recently went back for another one, but it’s no longer there. I keep browsing stores/pet stores to see if I can find it …

Just keep her space limited, you don’t want her running or jumping around. Keep things as normal as you can, change will make her uneasy. The litter should be fine, my 2 girls were fine with the carefresh and hay in their boxes. To check her incision, have her stand up for you for a treat, so you can check her tummy without having to pick her up. Works great

She likely won’t eat the first day, just keep checking on her, and tempt her appetite with her favorites. pellets and hay are usually the last things they go for after a spay.

The blanket on the floor should be fine, its what my 2 had If you can keep her in her pen, and not move her to clean, that may be better. Just go in and clean around her. She’ll be sore and not want to move. Pain meds are also recommended, make sure your vet gives you some. My girls went nuts for their metacam. They thought it was a treat each day

Just remember with pain medication that she will be ready to zoom around and stuff but don’t let her. lol Lolli was ready to race around the day after her spay but i kept telling her she had a big boo boo and couldn’t. So the pain medication is some good stuff! haha

@Monkeybun: Thanks a bunch I plan to have some yummy parsley & (shredded) carrots for Chessie. She’s not super messy, but her white coat sheds alot LOL. So I’ll probably roll the lint tape roller around her

@bunbuns1: I will definitely keep in mind some pain meds Thx!!

I was just at target and they had a similar style one. The guard is a bit differently shaped but the height is still the same. I don’t use the guard but these are the only ones my rabbits will use because it’s not as high/deep. I have a cheap regular sized cat box and they NEVER used it cause it was too deep for them or they were just lazy. lol It’s brand is Boots and Barkley. And of course they don’t show it on their website. It was only like $7 too. lol
