› FORUM › DIET & CARE › Ok water dish users! What kind of dish do you like/use?
So since Zeus has decided he likes water dishes, I’m trying to learn about all the kind of dishes you can use, and the pros and cons. Right now I’m using this:
http://www.petco.com/product/6386/P…0Cups-6386
It’s not perfect, but it works ok and it was cheap!
Occasionally Zeus does like to grab it with his teeth and try to flip it though, and then of course makes a mess.
.
So, what dish do you use, do you like it, have you had any issues with it? Post pics or a link if you can! ![]()
http://www.petco.com/product/104263/PETCO-Indio-Cat-Bowl.aspx is hwat all 3 of mine have for water. Smudge will drop her towel in it sometimes, but none of them have knocked it over.

Cute! I love the designs. I tried a heavy glass bowl with Zeus though and he threw it around like it was nothing. Stinker! ![]()
So he’s a bowl flipper? Is he in a pen? I cannot remember….

He’s in a dog crate/NIC cube pen combo. I don’t think he actually flips them on purpose, he just likes tossing them around and they end up getting flipped. ![]()

This might work for you then. I would get the largest one. I’ve seen others that attach but they aren’t as durable and they are harder to attach in my opinion and I’ve tried lots. I thinks these are affordable and worth it for flippers.
My rabbits in the pens have large dog water crocks because they are heavy, but my rabbits are not flippers.
I have a larger size at home that I’m not using, I’ll check the ounces for you when I get home if you think this might work for you.

Does that one sit in like a metal “ring” like some I’ve seen, or is it all one piece? I think he could still tip one in a metal ring mount if he really got playful.
No, no screw bolt thingy – those are difficult to use.
Here is a picture that gives you a better idea of the design:

The bolt part and the bowl are all one piece – in the middle of the bolt part it is open and then you screw the white part on (not too tight) to attach it…if that makes any sense to you.

Ohhh ok. That’s a neat design, and I can’t imagine he’d be able to play with/tip that.
They are extremely sturdy too and dishwasher safe. When I’ve used them in the past I’ve been very happy with them.
You do have to place it in an area that is convenient to unscrew and screw in depending on your set-up. Like you would not want to place it next to a wall because no way could you attach it. The best place I’ve found is at the opening type areas (not the opening though) of the pens or condos where you can hold it and attach it. Because you need to hold it on the inside of the condo pen and screw/attach it on the outside…does this even make sense LOL.
I used to have a ceramic crock when I had just Leroy. And that worked well, but with 2 bunnies I needed something bigger… I auctually use an 8×8 inch (i think) ceramic casserole dish. It’s large enough for both of them to have plenty of water but still fairly shallow so they can get their noses over the edge and down to the bottom if for some reason they drink all the water that’s in there. It’s really heavy (I actually have to take it out, dump it and wash it and put it back in while it’s empty and then use a large cup to fill the dish with water. I’ve had several unfortunate incidents trying to maneuver a heavy, full water dish over the side of their ex-pen) so they can’t flip it. The only issue I have sometimes is that Leroy will sometimes run though it! If he’s bouncing around the pen or trying to get out to get a treat, he won’t always watch where he’s going
But it’s shallow enough that I don’t worry about it.
Doesn’t sound exactly like what you’re looking for though, since you only have Zeus.
I have 2 of these stoneware crocks. I don’t know the cost as they came with Rumball. I have the bottom one in the picture. It’s heavy, straight sides and not easy to move. But then, I don’t have a 10lb bunny! lol. I was filling them right up but would be spilling so much when refreshing the water. Now I half fill them and the rabbits do fine with that. I alos tuck them into caorner so they’re less likely to run thru them. Mine don’t do this anyway but you never know! Before I had these I uses a bowl and Jersey took to flipping it, so I picked up a ceramic dip dish from a 2nds store. It was a plate and bowl all in one. The crocks are much better though. Btw, a good way to clean the water is drag a piece of fine mesh thru it to collect hair and hay. Then you can just replace the water at the end or start of the day.

I use a heavy crock.
One thing to try is wedging it between other items in his cage. I always try to put my crock in a corner, like next to the litter box or something. The bunnies are less likely to go running and binkying through a tiny corner and knock it over. If I put it in a wider open space, they’ve been known to accidentally run right through it and tip it over. The more out of the way and wedged into a corner you can get it, the better. Unless, of course, he’s actually trying to flip it, then you might have to take different measures.

He’s not trying to flip it specifically, he just likes playing with it. The last time I tried a heavy glass bowl in the corner of his cage, he kinda very carefully wedged himself between the cage wall and the bowl, then scooted the bowl out of the corner, then proceeded to throw it all over his cage like it weighed nothing.
Yes, it was full of water. And yes, his cage was waterlogged after. ![]()
He actually gets sad when they get flipped, because then he doesn’t have that top rim to grab onto and throw anymore. He kinda goes “Awwww, my game is ruined.” ![]()
You could try giving him the old one to play with when you get a new one. Maybe he’ll leave the new one alone then ![]()
Well I was at the dollar store the other day, and they had big ceramic dog bowls for $1. They are HEAVY, so I figured it was at least worth a shot. If it didn’t work out it was only a buck, so no big investment or anything. ![]()
So far, he hasn’t dumped or tipped it! I have it tucked in a corner of his cage that isn’t in his “flight path” for when he’s being silly and hopping around in there.
I really do find it amazing how much he’s drinking out of a bowl, compared to a bottle. His water consumption has seriously doubled since I’ve been offering him a dish. It means his litterbox is a bit messier to clean, but I’m glad he’s hydrating himself so well now! So I think I will keep the big dog dish in there, and I do still have the new water bottle in there as a backup water source if he somehow gets super-bunny strength and tips the ceramic dish. ![]()
I get a kick out of buying things for Zeus at pet stores, because besides his food, nothing I buy for him is for bunnies.. all the bunny stuff in stores is way too small. The cashier at the dollar store asked what kind of dog I had. I said the dish was actually for a bunny. She looked at me like I was crazy, then I added “..uh, a really big bunny.” ![]()
I have several le bistro’s and like them, however they are low and get poop and hay in them quickly (yeah don’t ask me how…same reason I can get to work and find poop in my pockets of clothing I just took out of the dryer maybe? lol)-My favorite is this big orange ceramic dish-it slops in at the top, so it never gets icky stuff in it, and it’s big and heavy-nobunny can tip it ![]()

Lol! Serious?
I do a mini freak when I see something that resembles a bunny poo outside of my house – thinking I’m somehow responsible for it getting there.
Kokaneeandkahlua, can you post a closeup of the big orange ceramic dish that slopes in at the top? If it never gets yucky stuff and can’t be tipped, it sounds like just the thing I’d like to get. Also, where did you find it? Thanks!
Jerseygirl, thanks for that neat tip about running a piece of mesh through the water, like a filter. I see!
Ceramic crocks I use, one is actually a ceramic dog bowl. They are nice and heavy to hard for the bunnies to pick up…. now if I could get certain buns from not picking up their food dishes that’d b nice LOL

Zeus’s feed dish is zip tied to his cage.. along with pretty much everything else in his cage. If it’s not “bolted down”, he’ll throw it around. ![]()
