        Hi All!

I picked up my 1 year onl male mini lop last night and discovered that he’d gone bald around his private area and belly.

My partner thinks he’s been pulling the hair out himself?

What do you think it would be? He seems fine and is eatling and hopping normally.

He lives indoors so it can’t be flees can it??

Help as I’m worried about my little baby

Hey there! Bald patches could be a number of things… mites, ringworm, or he could have had it pulled out by accident somehow.

Is it flaky or scaly around the area?

Make sure the skin isn’t red, inflamed, scaley, flakey or itchy. Hairloss can be from many different things. Fleas are not usualy a cause of hailoss unless the animal is scratching out the fur, or having an allergic reaction. You can tell Flea by the blak dirt (poop) they leave on the skin.

With that said, my healthy 6yr old mini Lop has a roundish spot with minimal hair above his genitals almost on his belly. He’s always had this, and it’s nothing.

No, i meant it’s a bit dry but it’s not flaky.

How would he have got flees or ringworm? He’s not been in contact with any other animals.

You said you picked him up last night… where was he? Ringworm is incredibly easy to spread and difficult to get rid of, and mites need to be treated as well. You might want to go ahead and get a vet appointment, just in case.

I wouldn’t think that fleas would cause that around his belly or private areas – fleas can come in on your shoes and stuff so even though he has no contact with other animals, he can get fleas – happened to my rabbit. Yes, you will see what is flea dirt if you look in his fur if he indeed has fleas. It may be harder to see if he has dark fur though.

No he has light fur and i’ve tried to spot flees or anything and there is nothing.

I’m going to the vets on Thursday so we’ll hopefully get it sorted then but I’m worried that he might be uncomfortable.

Do you think it could be a urine scald from him sleeping in his litter tray?

If he has light fur you would probably notice some staining in the remaining fur from the urine – orangey. If it were urine scald. Pee can stain light fur pretty significantly. My white rabbit has an orange butt and will continue to have until the fur grows out. Good you’re taking him to the vet though, if you never noticed that spot there before.

Urine scald can look different depending on the severity. But usualy the skin is inflamed.
I’m sure your Vet Thursday can tell you wants going on, hopefully it’s nothing to hard to take care of. In the emantime, keep the area clean, and watch to see if she is licking/scratching the area more then usual or any other changes in behaviour.

I guess it could be from lying in his tray because of the areas where he’s lost it. Maybe he cleans it really well but that causes more fur to come out? What type of litter do you use?

Try give him a second tray with some bedding (towel, hay, etc) or even keep it empty. He might take to using that as a bed instead.

have you moved recently, or has he had any changes? anything that could cause hime any stress? new smells, places, people, or things can cause an animals stress, and can result in hair loss or over excessive grooming.
both of my cats started loosing hair when we started packing to move, because of all the disorganization and changes they got stressed and there fore lost hair on their stomachs and parts of their legs.. their fur has been growing back a little bit now that their becoming used to the new house and new arrangments….

just a thought. i wonder if this is what caused hershey’s “bump” all the stress from moving and the change of living conditions…..
for those of you who don’t know what im talking about here’s the thread: https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aff/2/aft/111295/afv/topic/Default.aspx

stress is a big part in an animals (and humans) life and can cause many things to go wong.

I’ve not moved or changed anything which is why it’s so bizare! He seems absoloutly fine in himself and he’s eating as usual. When I touch it he dosen’t apper to be in any pain.

I’m hoping that he’s just been over grooming as he does have the tendancy to sit in his own poo for hours (disgusting I know but I love him)!

Thanks for all your advice – I love this website 🙂

the food’s the same too right? did you buy hay lately, he could be responding to a change in the hay, maybe the brand is using different hay? new veggies?
but a vet trip is deffinatly a good idea.

you should get him into a vet IMEDEDIETLY!! if it’s ringworm you might want to take him into the vets to get rid of it before it gets worse and become fatal!! good luck though!
