We might go camping in a week or so, and i might have to take the buns with because the people who would normaly take care of them are on vacation. So they would have t o stay in the van at night and in a xpen in our camping sight during the day. Would that be ok? We don’t really have any other option except leave them home alone for 2 1/2 days and i and not going to do that. So do you guys have any tips about camping with bunnys? We are not positive we are going to go but we might.

Any tips or advise would be great!

        Thanks! Mocha200

I have thought about this myself, taking my house bunny camping with me.
Are you in a provincial/federal cap site? Or out in the wilderness?

          I camp in the bush, so no pay camp sites, and less people the better. I have pretty much decided against taking the bunnies camping for these reasons;
          – Wild Animals, including Eagles. Bear and such may be drawn to my campsite because iof the bunnies.
          – Heat. Much harder to keep them cool, as there is no air conditioning.

If you can provide a safe palce where loose dogs or wild animals cannot get at you bunnies, and they are kept ‘indoors’ when you sleep and can be kept cool then you may want to try taking them with you. Other people have, heck if I had one of thse fancy big RV’s I would LOL

I agree with Andi. If you must take them, I would NOT have them outside at all – what about wild animals and snakes and hawks, etc…best not to take that chance having them outdoors.

we have a nice camper but they aren’t allowed to stay in it. there are dogs aloud in the campground and it could have wild animals, they have a LOT of chipmunks there that could spread diseases i haven’t herd of a bear ever in that campground. but who knows. i am not keen on taking them but its better then leaving them in a un air conditioned trailer house alone for two and a half days.

I have this whole paranoia of loose dogs, they don’t need to even attack your rabbit to kill them, they just need to scare them to death. And so i don’t have my rabbits outside my fenced yard. If you are in a public camp area this would be a big concern, b/c SO MANY Dog owners are clueless (Honestly I had a much worse word for them, but I’m keeping it PG) and have no control over their dogs, who will get excited and run straight to a pen/cage of bunnies out of excitment. (These owners also think it’s ‘cute’ there doggy wants to ‘play’ with the bunnies, and contine to allow the dog to scare the crap out of them)
If you can sort of have two layers of pens and keep the rabbits out of plain view may be best. If you have spare NIC’s you can build a fence with that, even a topper for the X-Pen (As a lid would be important too). Maybe hang towels/blankets on some of the sides (don’t want to restrict airflow on hot days) to keep them from being seen as well.

I don’t think I’d worry about the chipmunks. I agree it’s better than leaving them in an unairconditioned home for 2 1/2 days. Seeing that you don’t have many options you are pretty much stuck taking them and making the best of keeping them safe while you are there.

Hungry dogs are just as bad as any wild animal too.

well i have to say there was recently a two pit bulls that broke loose in that campground and pined our friends dog to the ground but he said they would never come back because he got in trouble. but that doesn’t mean there are other animals out there.

                      It doesn’t mean there isn’t.

Since you’ve asked we are all just giving you caution – I myself would not put my rabbits in this position and I certainly hope nothing happens to Mocha and Lulu but you need to be aware that things could happen. You will not be in an environment that you have total control over being at a campground.

I might even caution you to be aware of other campers trying to bother your rabbits – I have no idea how isolated in your campsite you would be from other campers.

Do you really not have any family friends who could just check in on them and dump some pellets into their dish and check their water once a day or something?  I can’t imagine you can’t find ANYONE to just pop in on them for a few days.

well the two people who normally do it are both on vacation. And our family all lives 1 to 3 hours away. we might have someone to take care of our horse but i am not sure if he would do the rabbits. and if i brought them up north and left them at the trailer no one would be able to take care of them. so idk i am kinda stuck.

If you do have to bring them with you, make sure their pen has a cover, and they can’t dig out. Some sort of wire or something laid on the ground, so that they can’t dig out and other things can’t dig in. But have it so their feet are still touching the ground so they don’t get sore toes. Chicken wire or something. Give them lots of hidey boxes, and shelter from the sun. It might be scary for them, so being able to hide will make it easier for them. And lots and lots of water. Also make sure no unknown plants are in their pen when you set it up

Anyone isn’t good enough. I can imagine that a pet owner can be in a jam for vacation pet care.

Don’t get too worried, Mocha, at least you do have a plan B of taking them with you if all else falls through.

What I meant was surely there is a family member, friend, coworker, neighbor, acquaintence, etc, etc, etc, who has some basic animal experience, or even is just a trustworthy person.  It sounds like if they are brought with, it will really not be an ideal situation.

i know what you mean. But there are those people who don’t have family near by, or friends who will deal with bunnies. It can happen that there is just nobody. I also know that mocha’s rabbits are the apple of her eye to her and she would worry very much if they were left with a new person as she has had trouble with vacation care for her two before.

Mocha, if you do take them along, they can’t be in an xpen. There could be weasels, dogs, birds of prey… they would need to be inside a sturdy wire dog crate unless you are sitting right with them. Do not leave them unattended in an xpen in the campground. Campgrounds attract much wildlife because of food scraps, barbecues, etc.

i have a suggestion. do you own any or those store bought cages? if its only for a few days im sure they’d survive. and they’d be alot more secure.

I agree with mirbear. For a couple of days, that would be the best solution. It will deepen their bond too.

no i don’t own any store bought cages, but i do own two dog crates. I am trying my best to find a pet sitter, but i have to make something clear, if i can’t find someone to pet sit, i would stay home with them ( even though i have been waiting my whole summer to go). but one of the people who have pet sited the buns are on vacation and the other people are going to be to. and i can not think of any one else who lives around us. but we might not even end up going camping because of other things. so i am hoping every thing will end up right in the end.

It sounds like you’re definitely trying to plan something out, good on you for thinking of all possible solutions.  Can you ask your parents if they have any friends/coworkers who would be willing to bun-sit?  I’d hate for you to miss the vacation and have to stay home just because you couldn’t find someone.

You would also have as much worry about keeping them in a vehicle- if it is hot outside- it is way hotter in a vehicle.  Unless you have the van running and AC on- which I assume not since they are not allowed in the camper.
