I think VPI is the only one that covers rabbits. It’s said they’re now the 3rd most popular pet so I would have thought insurance companies would be getting on this.

They offer multiple policy discounts- so if you insure more than 1 pet you get a discount.

They do NOT cover pre-existing or genetic conditions- so if you are looking at your rabbit now and can predict that it needs dental work- it will most likely not be covered.  Malocclusion (misalignment) of the teeth is not covered.  But if your bunny were to get an tooth abscess not because of a genetic condition- that is covered.

Insurance rules vary from state to state so you should call VPI and talk to them.

Premiums are based on the pet AND their age.  I looked into insuring one of my dogs when I first started at my current job- and they required her past medical history- at least one year and a comprehensive blood panel results to be submitted to even be CONSIDERED for insurance- and the premiums were very high- about $50 or more a month I think for a 12 year old dog.

You might check with your home insurance…I’ve heard from a number of people that they found great/cheap pet insurance through the company that covers their home/cars

Home insurance companies rarely cover exotics such as rabbits unfortunately.
Have you looked into Care Credit? Sarita mentioned it and I think it is such a good idea. It depends on your vet office though if they are a member with Care Credit.

Unfortunately not many insurance companies cover rabbits yet… the company that I like for dogs and cats is Petplan, which has a different structure than VPI but only covers dogs and cats at the current time. As far as covering dental work, there are two basic kinds of plans emerging:

– those that pay for some percentage of most medical care, including routine/wellness/preventative stuff. I’ve found that these policies tend to have higher premiums and exclude a lot of conditions (i.e. hereditary), but will cover things like yearly exams and vaccines. VPI follows this model.
– those that don’t pay for routine care and exist pretty much solely for unexpected expenses. These plans have lower premiums but higher copays. Petplan follows this model, and with few exceptions they DO cover congenital conditions in dogs and cats.

The *second* Petplan picks up bunnies, mine will be going on there In the meantime, like most other rabbit owners, I’m going on luck, savings and CareCredit if needed…
