Because I think I may have found a cause to two of my bunny problems currently:

I was using feline pine in Pip’s box this week. She suddenly developed the same mushy cecals as Fiver. I’m thinking they may both be EATING the litter and that may be why they are unwell? I’ve tried everything else; changing diet, eliminating treats, etc.

Also, with Fiver’s adoption day coming up on the 20th, I’m thinking back to when Mimzy first started having trouble with his nose. It was about a month after Fiver came home and we started using the FP for Fiver’s box….hmmm.

I’m planning on finishing the bag I have and then just using my YN from now on. It’s the only unscented I can find. Although my local large pet store who shall go unnamed has not only discontinued the food I’m feeding the dog and cats, but appears to be closing out the YN as well.

        *sigh* It just never ends.

Anyone else have super sensitive bunnies when it comes to litter? If so, what are your bunnies’ symptoms?

Mushy cecals cannot be the result of an allergy, I don’t think. I’ve never ever had any of my rabbits eat any litter, but I guess I wouldn’t put them past them.

I guess it wouldn’t hurt to try another litter.

Mushy cecals though are a result of diet, not allergies.

When you say, unwell, how are they not well?

Fiver overproduces cecals that he doesn’t eat, just mashes them into his bedding and trods them around on his feet. I’m forever doing butt baths on him.
Then this last week I had to do a butt bath on Pip as well and the only thing that changed was the litter in their boxes.
I say ‘allergy’ in reference to Mimzy sneezing all the time and the presence of the pine litter, which may be too pungent for him. I notice he sneezes when I come in after a shower also, if I’ve used any perfumy soaps.

I think there’s no hope if it’s not the litter. I’ll have to get him in for a fecal/cecal test and an exam.

MM, you may be on to something. It certainly wouldn’t hurt to stop using it for a time to test the theory.

I was looking up the ingredients and was surprised to read it has guar gum. This can be a stool softener. Then I realised this is only in the clumping formula of feline pine. Didn’t even know there was a clumping kind! Could you have accidently picked up a bag of that kind. The bags look very similar.

No clue. But I am going to drop the FP for now until I get a firmer diagnosis…no pun intended. ^_^
Thanks for the linkie on the wood pellets too, Jerz…although with the possible ballot to ban woodstoves up here, I’ll believe they’ll build that plant when I see it. lol….
Tragically, I’m allergic to things like cottonwood and aspen myself…so even if the buns could use those pellets, they would have to pass my sniff test. We’ll have to see. We’d probably be buying some for our own stove if the gov’t allows us to use it.
