Hi there, I’m a new rabbit owner and have learned a ton from reading websites, I just wanted some input from others on a couple of questions.

My rabbit was surrendered by one of our patients (I’m an acupuncturist.) She was too mentally ill to care for him anymore, and he stayed in our clinic for a few weeks. I’m a bleeding heart longtime vegetarian who must stay away from shelters at all costs because I already have two cats and wanted to keep it at that limit – at first I just made sure the rabbit (who the patient annoyingly had named “Bunny”) had plenty of food, exercise, and water. Then of course the inevitable happened and I fell madly in love with him. She actually took great care of him except for the fact that his cage is a little too small (we’re waiting for his deluxe gigantic new cage to arrive) and she didn’t get him fixed. I live in Chicago where the going rate for a male rabbit neuter is $400. If I travel 2 hours and 20 minutes north to my parents’ house in Sheboygan, WI, it costs $110 (also a rabbit specialist.)

Is it wrong of me to subject him to a longer car ride? $300 is a pretty signifcant chunk of money to save, especially considering what I’ve dished out on his new fancy cage and cord covers for bunny-proofing, etc. I don’t want to stress him unnecessarily – but is a 2 hour car ride that much more stressful than a 1/2 hour ride? He’s been in the car for 1/2 hour before with no problems, freaks out when he goes in the carrier (like every animal), then just sits in the back sulking. We would also be in an unfamiliar environment (my parents’ house) – although he’s only been home with me for a week and already is quite comfortable and in charge.

My other question is about fleas. At the herb store connected to the acupuncture clinic, we have a litter of kittens (will be last one, don’t worry, the father is fixed and mother will be fixed after the kittens are weaned.) They have fleas of course, so I’ve been bathing them to try to control the number of fleas until they’re old enough to be treated with flea poison. I want to give my cats a flea treatment just to be on the safe side in case some of the flea eggs tagged along with me. I bought Advantage which I read is safer around rabbits. I’m not going to put the treatment on Mr. Bun-Bun of course, just the cats, but I know the poison sheds into the general environment, and I don’t want to do anything to endanger him.

Phew! Sorry to go on and on. Thanks in advance for any advice! I am so excited to be a new rabbit mommy!

Welcome! He sounds like he’s in excellent hands with you.

I think he will be fine with the long car ride – yes, it’s not ideal, but it will work best for you and as long as he stays cool in the car, he will be fine. Many of our members have traveled long distances with their rabbits and they are fine.

Advantage and Revolution are rabbit safe (Never Frontline though – bad stuff) so you can treat Mr. Bunbun with this if you need too.

Hi, welcome to the forum! Thanks for taking this bunny in. Have you given him a new name? Advantage flea treatment is safe around bunnies. Advantage and Revolution can be used on rabbits. The main one to be wary of is Frontline which is not safe.

I don’t think the car trip should be a big deal. To me, you can pocket the $300 for any future vet care you might need for your furbabies. Do you plan to stay awhile after the neuter?
You might be able to find something closer to home though. Some of the low cost neuter programs do cover rabbits so it’s worth looking into.

Edit: Oops, sorry for repeating much of what Sarita wrote.

No problem – I appreciate any replies! Yes we renamed “Bunny,” he’s now “Mr. Bun-Bun” or Bun-Bun for short. Yes it’s also uncreative, but we started calling him that and it stuck. Our patients in the acupuncture clinic loved him, but I’m pretty sure we were breaking some health codes by having him there – he’s safer at home with me. Luckily my cats are tolerating him – he wants to play with them, but they want nothing to do with him as of now.
Bun-Bun definitely needs to be fixed, he’s litter-trained but already piddled on my couch trying to mark his territory.
Prior to this I had no idea that Bunny People were crazier than Cat People! Now I’m happy to be in both of those categories.

Oh sorry, I didn’t see that in your original post – Mr Bun-Bun! Is that him in the picture? Lovely! Looks like a rex breed. Um…the couch thing…yes. Fixing should help with this but some neutered rabbits will still target couches!

Yes, that’s him. I have no idea what breed he is, I tried looking at pictures online but all the little brown ones looked similar. He acts bipolar – runs around like crazy, and then will lay in my lap for hours (literally!) – which I’ve read is quite rare for rabbits actually.

Yes laying on your lap is. I’m jealous! But the bursts of energy isn’t too unusual. They can do that. Some if us call it the Bunny 500. You may even notice certain times of the day when he’s quite active and others where he just sleeps. Totally normal.
If you want to post more pictures, I’m sure members here will help identify his breed some. We love pictures!

fyi: rex breeds have some easy to recognise traits. The fur is one length and feels velvety. They will also have sort of crinkley whiskers.  They don’t have much fur on the underside of their paws/hocks too.  Mini rexs average about 4lbs and the full rexes about 10 lbs.

Yes – when he was with me in the clinic (during the late morning and all afternoon) he would cuddle in my lap for hours – probably because he would normally be sleeping then. Now that he’s home with me, he gets out of his cage in the morning and early evening/night, which is when he wants to run around and go crazy. So he hasn’t been in my lap as much, also probably because he’s getting used to the new place.
He might be a mini rex… he has super-soft short fur, feels like a chinchilla. His whiskers are tiny and almost invisible… I haven’t weighed him yet, we’ll see when he goes to the vet, but I estimate he’s around 3 lbs, and probably full-grown as he’s about a year old.

Definately sounding like a mini rex. From the pic I’d say his colouring is called Castor. All that aside, he sounds like a complete love. Welcome to Bunny Slavedom.

i’ve got some potential good news- there is a rabbit rescue out in algonquin (where i got my two buns) that might be able to help you get a reduced neuter fee. when i got my buns there they gave me some sort of certificate to take to a place, which was supposed to give me a low-cost neuter. i didn’t end up using it as i have since left the chicago area (the bunnies got to ride in the car for 12 hours on that one…).

i lived in evanston so the ride to algonquin was 1.5 hours and my buns seemed to handle it fine. when i only had one, i put him in his litter box with nothing in it and just held him in my lap while my companion drove and he seemed quite content.

if no splitting hares can’t help you out, i would definitely take him on the adventure! if you can it would probably be good to have a day before and a day after the neuter so he isn’t freaking out when he gets there and so he isn’t still somewhat anesthetized when he goes home.

                          good luch!

I have used revolution on my bunny. My non bunny vet recommended it. They gave him a kitten formula, just make sure you watch him for the first 1/2 hour, so it has a chance to dry. All my bunny wanted to do was groom where I put it.

I don’t think a car ride will be too stressful on them. As long as they have a litter box and maybe some water… depending on when you are getting him neutered.

Thanks for the suggestions! I thought about contacting Red Door Shelter here in Chicago to see if they know of any low-cost options. Technically Bun-Bun is a rescue rabbit who was just lucky enough to skip the shelter stage. I may just make the drive up to Wisconsin, I would need to stay a few days anyway because they require an initial exam to assess health before doing the operation.
Brazen little guy peed on the couch, I washed the couch cover and put it back on but left the side he usually sits on uncovered… he walks over to the freshly laundered side and sprays right in front of me! Back to the laundry room! Hopefully getting him fixed cuts down on this, but other than the 2 times he hasn’t done it anywhere else.
