… my beautiful boy Stanley is litter trained, he chooses to use his litter tray to go to the bathroom properly; yet he will leave some pellets on the couch, its like they happen without him thinking about it.

I sit in one place and he loves to come to where I sit and have a snuggle (I don’t want to stop this) but he even leaves pellets on me.  I’ve tried all kinds of smells to stop him viewing the couch as his toilet inc. vingegar which didn’t put him off at all he started licking the couch and the living room stank for days! I’ve tried various anti pet stuff all to no avail.

I love that he feels at home with me and wants to spend time with me; I just wish I coud limit all his bathroom habits to his tray.  Am I being totally unrealistic?  Is this something I will have to learn to live with?

        Please help,

        Kirstie x

Ps. Used they hay in litter tray to train him in first place.

If he is leaving a few droppings, then that is normal territorial pooping and there’s nothing you can do about it.

I’ve heard that most rabbits, even those that are litter trained, occasionally leave a stray poo or two around. Oliver does this sometimes, but I just pick up the droppings I put them in his litter. Rabbit poo doesn’t bother me that much; it’s small and not smelly, so I don’t mind dealing with it. I’m used to dealing with hedgehog poo, and man, their stuff is naaaasty!

If your bunny is leaving more than a few poos, then maybe he’s not as litter trained as you think? Oliver likes being on the couch with us, but we had to limit his time up there at first because he wasn’t too keen on the litter box yet. As his habits got better, we slowly started increasing his couch time and now he’s allowed up there whenever he wants.

It’s also rare to be able to fully litter train an un-altered bunny. He should get better after being neutered.

It certainly sounds like the territorial poop. Some people have put a litter tray up beside them so they can at least pop them there if they decide to litter. I’m not sure if this is good or bad….Does it reinforce that the appropriate place is in a litter box OR does it teach them that the couch is an ok place to litter and they’d do that when the tray isn’t there?

Mine have taken to peeing and pooing on the couch!  I don’t know what it is about couches and rabbits. They can get on the armchairs but they don’t soil them. They also have access to the furniture during the day and they don’t soil them then. It’s just when I’m at home. Their free range privileges are going to be limited!!!

Yep buns are funny about some things.   Cotton used to jump on me and dig.   Then leave a few poop then hop off  come back dig some more and repeat.    I would put his poops in his litterbox right next to the couch.        Didn’t bother me much.    Guess he figured he marked me enuf that Ruby knows I am Cottons pet and he has stopped.

He still leaves occassional poops by the door or in front of Ruby’s house now n then.  He has gotten much better.

Ruby has now started leaving territorial poops about 5 on the rug by my side of the bed.   Just started this a few weeks ago.  I washed the rug and that made it worse.   I just pick them up and put them in her box.   5 poops aren’t much of a problem for me.   So I don’t worry about it too much as most of the stuff they put in the litterbox and not the floor.
