So most of us feed Timothy hay as the main staple.  Will orchard grass work as a staple too?

The shelter where I got Leo feed their buns (and horses) local (as in the neighbor next door’s) orchard grass.  Leo came home with a huge garbage back of orchard grass and Arduina seems to love it too.  I like it because its not as messy as the 2nd cut Timothy hay I get.  Arduina and Leo also love the 3rd cut timothy hay, is that just as good as 2nd cut?

I have been alternating btw the 2nd cut timothy and orchard grass and use the 3rd cut timothy hay as a treat (I don’t have as much of that).

Next time I make a hay order, can I just get orchard grass and 3rd cut timothy? Or should I also get 2nd cut?

Oh most definitely! Orchard grass is a great staple.

Well ideally the 1st cut has the most fiber for timothy hay but I only use 3rd cut when I can get it and if I can’t I use the 2nd cutting.

You can also get oat hay or bluegrass so there are options (if your rabbits like them) besides Timothy.

Those are all fine choices, I wouldn’t worry about it. As long as it is a grass hay it will feed the rabbits well, and I personally believe some variety from time to time is a good thing.

I feed my bunny Orchard all the time. I also buy bags of Meadow Grass and mix it in with the Orchard. It gives a good variety I recommend Oat as well!

The shelter bunnies are on mostly Local grass hay, and if they get anything else it’s been donated. Can’t be picky when it’s free
My guys get 1st cut Timothy, i try to stick to first cut when ever I can, it’s more fiberous but also less messy i find, it has a lot less ‘bits’ falling out. I’ve had good luck with 1st cut so far, so i am sticking to it.

Good to know! Thanks everyone. I think the orchard they actually call “bluegrass’ because it is really blue in color.

Is that the KMS hay? She really has good hay. I love her 3rd cut – haven’t tried the 2nd cut in awhile though.

Though there are actually different kinds of Orchard,Blue Grass is not Orchard. It is a different type of grass.

Here is a little tidbit that will helps explain the difference: http://www.gardenguides.com/129612-…grass.html
