Gracie has been having some problems lately.  I think she ate too many peppers a few days ago and had some diaherra.  We gave her a butt bath and she ate well that night and the next day for lunch, but for dinner time she didn’t eat.  She sat in their tunnel hiding the whole time until I forced her to go in her cage.  She had a stomach ache.  She went to the 2nd level and sat in her fav. corner which I didn’t like because I knew she wasn’t going to move.  I moved her to the litter box and she went right back to her corner   I couldn’t do anything that night so I waited it out.  About 50% of the time when I give her a bath she has a stomach ache, maybe from licking her hair up or something.  She was fine the next day but she had pee all over her…ugh.  Didn’t have time that day to give her a bath, I know bad mommy but with her long hair I need another person to help me and we need a to hold her to blow dry her off while combing her…it’s a long process.  So the next day (today) I picked her up but she wasn’t that bad, she just had stained fur, not as bad as poopy butt.  I can usually just comb that out.  Well when we gave her a bath before we got too much soap in and didn’t get it al lot but when it dried it matted her fur   So I flipped her over and started combing her sides and rear.  The one side (that had some soap left on her), her skin was red, almost or already raw!    I’m not sure if it was from the soap, the comb, or if it is urine scald from her sitting in it (I’m assuming) all night when she wasn’t feeling good.  So my BB friends, what should I do with her skin?  Should I put neosporin on it?  Could this turn into an absessed or not since it’s just raw skin?  (It’s not bleeding)  Thanks guys!  I so wish Gracie would get a break, poor girl has been through enough but at least she has someone to take care of her now.

If it is raw skin, and not just devoid of hair, I’d put the neosporin on it.

            I second the neosporin.

Aww, poor girl. She does seem to have ongoing issues. (((Gracie!)))

Did she have to be treated for coccidia once?

That sounds familiar.  She might have had it when I first got her and we treated it right away.  The last time I took her to the vet she said her calcium was high but she’s on timothy pellets (which she gets no more treat ball with them in it…and she loved it too ) and timothy hay.  We just put the last batch in the basement today so I’m going to switch to Orchard next and see if that might help her.  But ever since we went to the vet and was put on antibiotics for a possible urinary infection she has been super with the litter box and has hardly peed outside of it!

Thanks guys I’ll put some on her tomorrow…it’s getting late here so I gotta get to bed.

If you think the shampoo is causing irritation- you should rinse her again to remove it.

I recommend silvadene for this. Also, I never use soap for these type of things, only warm water.

I agree with Sarita- I never use soap when I wash a poopy butt- just warm water.  I think Silvadene might be a prescription?  but it works awesome- your vet might be willing to call in a prescription to a pharmacy for you.

Same here, warm water only. I’ve gotten to where I have 2 plastic dishpans I put in the kitchen sink and put water in both. While Lola is soaking in the first one I use my fingers to work and break the lumps apart and get everything I can off of her then plop her into the second one so I can finish off in clean water and it works pretty well. She’s white and her butt comes out pretty clean.

Huh I always thought you guys used soap. I bought a hypoallergenic animal shampoo that I used. She usually is ok with it but I think hubby might have put a little too much on. I put neosporin on her last night and will put some more on tonight. It’s by her back legs so she can’t lick it off.
