› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › My “Male” Bunny Has Nipples
I was petting Linus’s tummy recently as he was laying on his side and I noticed a tiny little lump. I moved the fur around it so I could get a look at it and it appears to be a nipple. I felt around to see if there were more, and indeed I found a few more. I googled first to see if male rabbits could possibly have nipples, and there were some mixed results so I decided to come here. For a male rabbit, Linus does have a rather pronounced dewlap. I haven’t been able to check his genitals because he’s very squirmy and I try not to flip him over unless for nail trimmings. Bunny burrito-ing is even a challenge!
Can male rabbits have nipples? Or is my little boy actually a girl? I am going to try to get he/she in for a neuter or spay very soon any how.
How old is bunny?
I felt my bunnies nipples as I pet her while she was on her side.
You might have a girl
Females have dewlaps. Very rarely males.
Don’t most male animals of any species have nipples?
Yes, nipples have nothing to do with sex (gender). Male humans have nipples…
Well when I googled it, a bunch of the results said that unlike most animals only females have nipples but a few of the results said males could have nipples. So I’m quite confused >.< However it is rare for males to have dewlaps?
Oh and I believe Linus is estimated to be about 7-9 months old, Brittany
males usually only get dewlaps if they are overweight. females tend to develop them as they mature
Did you find the other lumps in a row? The bucks do have nipples but they’re not as developed. Typically, the testicles would have come down by his age so that might be a quicker way to check his sex. It’s not a fool proof way though as some males are late developers or they don’t decend at all. But if you can see testicles, at least you’ll know Linus is in fact a male.
Male can develop little dewlaps if they’re carrying weight. I also read that it’s more common in neutered buck to have dewlaps.
I’m guessing it nothing like the unfixed Doe dewlaps though.
Well Linus does not appear to be overweight. When I recently trimmed up Linus’s nails I didn’t see any testicles which I thought was odd as well but he may just be late. I found the nipples like across from each other in pairs along the stomach.
Mmmm….I just looked at some pics you posted before. “His” weight looked ideal but there is definately a mini dewlap.
So are you ok with him becoming a her?![]()
Yes I’m fine with it ^^ I’m just not looking forward to the spay, I hear it’s rough on the girls.
It can be, but with rest and pain meds, they come through just fine
I’ve had 2 girls done now, and both came through great ![]()
I’m nervous my bun will be one of those who rips out their stitches >.< Hopefully everything goes okay! I'm glad your spays have been successful Monkey!
Has your bunny been in to a vet for an exam yet? Even breeders/vets can make mistakes when sexing very young bunnies, so it’s definitely possible he is a she. Females begin to develop a dewlap at around 6 months. My mini rex started to get hers at that point, but when she was spayed a month later, it shrunk back down.
We’re planning on taking Linus in for his/her first exam this month in order to set up a neuter/spay as soon as possible. I first noticed the developing dewlap about a month ago. I’ve had a feeling he was a she for quite some time but my family just tells me I’m crazy. xD “The people at the pet store know what they’re doing.” Oh well!
^^^Hahaha!!! No, they don’t. So many buns get missexed by petstores, breeders, AND vets. It can be really, really hard to tell when they’re so little. At his age, chances are testicles would be visible now, altho in some cases, bunnies will “suck them in”. Usually tho, you can see them.
When I purchased my first rabbit Peter, I was informed that it was a he. It wasn’t till a year latter that I noticed some nipples and started to scratch my head in confusion. My aunt (who is a vet) explained how to do a “sex check” over the phone. It turned out that he was actually a she, and had to deal with a sexually confused name for the rest of her life.
Nipples are more pronounce on females; but males can have a set of nipples to be proud of too. I just wouldn’t encourage any male bunnies to go out and get them pierced…
^^^LOL!!! That would be one bad bunny… get him a little motorcycle too…
Here is a website that shows how to sex your bunny. Ok….fair warning – there are pictures of *everything* in case that bothers some people. lol

I tried explaining to my parents that the sex of a bunny is easily confused when it’s still quite young! xD Maybe they’ll learn to listen to me!
Thanks for the great reference bunbuns1!
Hmm I may have to lecture my bun about unnecessary piercings!
Don’t forget to talk to “him” about expensive cars, and nights out without calling home too. ![]()
Oh and bringing home random girls! Sheesh being a bun slave is way harder than most people think.
Yes, being a bunny slave is quite hard
But the pay off is fun! I find the fun in cleaning a litter box 😡 That is just me though.. LOL.
Haha! Anyway, i don’t doubt the idea of a pet store employee just SAYING that a bun is a boy or girl to please the costumers. Lotsa petstores (unfortunately) think of animals as objects and wads of cash, not living breathing creatures. Ive shared a good amount of heartbreak because of them.
Oh MY goodness!!!! I literally just felt nipples, or what I believe to be nipples. I was told this was a boy. When I felt them, I was so worried this was a skin condition! I noticed he didn’t feel too much discomfort when I touched them, however. My mother told me these were probably nipples. As most of you have said, there are mixed results online! I did examine his “parts” but he is barely three months old! AH! I guess I need a professional opinion ![]()
