my rabbit is about 8 years old, he was examined heart hypertrophy(right side) in November 2009, I didn’t let him do the ultrasonic waves, but two veterinarians considered it isn’t thymoma, so I let him took vasodilator, the initial two months, his breath is slightly become not so short and rapid, but after that, he is pant again, until now. but he took twice x-ray this year, it showed his heart didn’t keep expanding too much(but had slight spur). and the environment’s temperature is moderate, I don’t know why he become that, he seems very uncomfortable.

when illuminated the third x-ray, it seemed the veterinarian hurt him, the day after we went home, I found his left canthus had a small laceration and tears, and his nose had water’s voice while breathing.

I broght him to another animal hospital, after some days, his wound recovered, but still secret tear, even the right eye, the nose wasn’t recover, too. so the veterinarian thought he is ”nasolacrimal duct blocking”, now he has took medicine for five days, but doesn’t improve, he also slobbering, but the veterinarian said his teeth do not too long.

his appetite is well, but his mouth, jaw, chest, are very wet, why does he become that?might he hurt the jawbone?

his vitality is average, but frequently to lie prone.

he has too much symptom..I can’t tell whether they are related to each other and what’s the cause..please give me some helps.

OP…This is BinkyBunny in Admin mode today:

So I am understanding this correctly let me paraphrase —Your rabbit was being treated for a heart issue, but later his eye was possibly injured in the vets care along with nasal issues. So then you took him to another vet who treated him for the eye and nose, but his nose and breathing issues did not improve, so the vet checked the teeth and did not see teeth issues. Did the vet only check the front teeth? Rabbits can also have problems with their back teeth, and there could be other mouth and jaw issues that are happening. There really is no way for us to know.

I would either call this vet again to let him/her know what’s going on, or seek out another vet. Do you have access to rabbit-savvy vets?

          Helloworld!!

his back teeth are not too long either.
I will bring him to the hospital again next week.
            the veterinarian is rabbit-savvy.
but I’m not sure whether we will find the cause.
            because it was too complex..

One of our wonderful members (eh.hem…Jersey…THANK YOU) sent me some information to look over that might be helpful in this situation.  Again,  there is no way for us to know for sure what is REALLY going on — but the link provides information about someone else’s bunny going through some very similar symptoms and maybe this can be used to consult with your own rabbit savvy vet about.

thank you very much. In fact I saw this information weeks ago, it is useful to me, but two veterinarian thought my rabbit hasn’t thymoma.
they thought my rabbit’s third eyelid doesn’t keep appear.
and they said if he has thymoma, he will die within one year.
if there are possibilities of any disease, please tell me, and I will discuss with veterinarians.
                thanks a lot!

I’m sorry you rabbit is so poorly.

As Binky Bunny has already brought up, molar problems can behind the drooling (and usually is!).  How did they check his molars previously? It might take sedation to take a thorough look and xrays of the roots.

If it’s not the molars, I wonder if the wet mouth is from laboured breathing? Like rabbits do under heat stress.
Did the most recent x-ray show the condition of his lungs? Is the enlarge heart putting pressure on them for instance? Similar to what a thymoma may do. Maybe an ultrasound would be needed to check the lungs and major arteries and pulmonary veins. Respiratory and heart issues often go hand in hand.

It’s also possible he’s contracted a respiratory infection separate to his heart issue.

You would really need to see a specialist to determine what is going on. Do you a rabbit specialist near that you could visit?

From what I can understand from your very good description of his history, I would see if the vet could reevaluate him, and not rule out thymoma. It’s suspicious that right after the difficulty with breathing he developed eye problems. It could be that the two are not related, blocked ducts can be common with rabbits, but in such a complex situation, every single symptoms needs to be looked at and evaluated.

I hope you can get to the bottoms of what is going on with your guy! He is very lucky to have someone who cares this much about him!

in fact my English is poor..so it is very difficult for me to reply you-all..
but I will bring all of the suggestion to discuss with my veterinarian on Aug 2.

I just want to say good luck tomorrow. It sounds complicated, but if your vet is good he will get help for it.

                        What is your first language?

there are few rabbit specialist in my country.(no more than 15)
some of them had been to America,( for study the course in exotic animal)

today I go to two animal hospitals.
now I can confirm that my rabbit has not thymoma.
                          maybe I’m too anxious.
he has accompanied me since I was a elementary student.

I hope he is just ”nasolacrimal duct blocking” and can recover soon.
                          thanks the blessing!

I do too! Blocked ducts are usually a more simple fix.

                            ((((Healthy vibes!))))

My sister-in-law is from Taiwan. She has trouble sometimes, but I am better than most at understanding her. I am terrible at learning languages, so I admire anyone’s attempt. All I know is Sheshe (don’t know how to write it out, but it’s Thank You in Mandarin.)

How is your bunny doing today? Hope he’s feeling better.

                                What a coincidence!
I thought nobody know where is Taiwan.
                                “sheshe”=”謝謝”  ,means thank you

the veterinarian change another medicine to treat his blocked ducts.
it seems to have some effect.
                                but still not recover fully.
I’m afraid that he need to have a operation.
                                his heart can’t endure anaesthetic..

but happily,he looks better now .

My first bunny had blocked eye ducts and medication helped him. It came back, but it was an ointment that he just used whenever his eye got moist and it kept it from ever getting worse.

Let’s hope he gets better soon and doesn’t need any surgery.

My sister-in-law is also from Taiwan. My brother lived in Taiwan for 15 years and so he is fluent in Manderin.  My best friend is Taiwanese as well,  though she’s been living here since she was 13. She taught me some manderin when we roomed together in college.  I did take a Manderin class, but I need to keep up with it.

Anyway, back to your bunny –  I am glad to hear your bunny is doing better, and I hope he continues to do well.

                                      Keep us updated.

If bunnies obey basic commands in Mandarin more than English (I’m thinking “come here” or don’t chew on that”) than I need you guys to teach them to me! I think diva bunnies are universal – they say “no, I won’t” in every language.

How’s he doing? Any sign of improvement?

“come here” in Mandarin is “過GUO 來LAI” , or just say “來”(LAI).
“don’t chew on that” is “不 BU 要YAO 咬IAO” , it’s difficult to read, you can say “don’t do that” = “不BU 可KE 以YI”.
in fact, my rabbits never listen to me..
they come to me when they listen the voice of shaking food and oxbow papaya fruit..

after changing the medicine on Aug 2.
                                          he got better .
but since Aug 7, he became worse again.
I will go back to the hospital on Aug 10.

Awe your bunny got bad again.  Maybe a stronger med or take it for longer time. Your vet will decide.

I hope he gets well soon.   We worry so much about them.  It is hard when one is sick.

Hoping for good news on your bunny’s health.             True no matter the language all bunnies seem to know I wont’ til I am ready and I may never be ready

yes Taiwan is a island which near China.

                                              Aug 10.
the veterinarian didn’t want rabbit to take too much antibiotics.
so he gave some bromelain to my rabbit.
veterinarian said bromelain will dilute his tear, then tears can flow easier.
now it’s Aug 15. my rabbit still not improve..
                                              but he won’t take surgery.

all I need is to find something which can make him feel better rather than make him recovered.
is there are another supplements which have the effect as bromelain?
