I’m wondering if I’m doing more harm than good, so I thought I would ask here.  I have a very nice 4 x 4 foot pen that my Honey is in all day while I sleep.  (I work at night generally).  I work from home and she is in my home office.  When I get up in the evening, she is perfectly content that I’m just there and stays in her pen until about 9 or 10 at night.  Then, she does want out and I of course have to clean up and all, so I let her out.

I have been letting her run the room for about 6 to 8 hours at night.  Is this too long?  She’s 16 weeks old now.  She poos EVERYWHERE!! There is no rhyme or reason to it.  She has claimed under the bed in that room as her hidey place of choice and tends to not go so much under there, but my carpet all around? A mess!  It does seem to be though 2 or 3 hours after she’s been out before I notice a lot of poo on the rug.  Suggestions?

She is usally pretty good about just peeing on her rugs in her cage or in the box.  She does wet sometimes on my carpet.  Thank god for vinegar!

I’m wondering if 6 to 8 hours is maybe too long, even in just one room?  Should it just be 2 or 3 hours maybe? and then if she does well with that for a while, move it up an hour and so on?  I hate that she is “cooped up” in that pen, but then I realize some buns spend their whole life in a tiny cage and never let out much.

I just thought I’d ask here what others have done with very young buns.

        Thanks in advance!

With younger buns, I’d definitely limit the Out time, as well.. they aren’t completely potty trained yet. Wait til she is spayed to give her that much play time

I think you’ve answered your own question with a good solution.
A young bunny needs to learn good litter habits thoroughly, and being more confined actually achieves this. 2-3 hours, with a bit of vigilance in putting her in her pan as soon as she poos or pees will reinforce the idea that she needs to keep it in the box. Put all of the poos, and urine soaked paper towel you clean with, into her litter pan right away so she smells it in there only.

When she’s out another good option is having a second “out” litter pan, so she doesn’t have to go far to get to it. Less initial space, and less time out, gets the job done well. Eventually she will be able to be out longer hours. I say this as a pair of ears just stuck up into my line of sight while I’m typing. Someone I know has been out, playing, pausing in her open cage’s litter box, then out again for a run.

I know nothing of age as both my rabbits I adopted as adults, but I wouldnt allow that long when lot litter trained. Jenny has free run for about 14 hours a day, but she is a litter trained adult.
