Apparently that’s just what lettuce does in response to midsummer heat stress, and actually derives its name from it: http://www.chow.com/ingredients/83. I don’t think I’ve noticed it in lettuce I’ve grown but I never let it get past the tasty baby stage either

Interesting. A lettuce’s response to stress. I learnt something.

I hae chopped perfectly fine romaine that has done this.  If the lettuce is clean and the scissors are clean- then I think it is fine.

I don’t see it often- but I have seen it- and it is clearly from the lettuce and not a contaminant or sign of spoilage as the romaine was pretty darn fresh!

Also be sure not to give the Iceberg lettuce that we commonly eat. It’s not good for bunnies, with our without juice.

Hey Mocha, it just goes to show how fresh your lettuce is! Sometimes I see it in store bought lettuce but not often. Anyway, as others have assured you, it’s normal and fine for bunnies. It might be bitter but some bunnies like the bitterness. fyi, alot of lettuce varieties have a scientific name starting with Lactuca which is latin for Milk! So white juice or the “milk” is fine. You see it sometimes in dandies and thistle too.  I actually think this milk stuff has beneficial enzymes and why rabbits eat dandies and such in the wild. Smart bunnies!

My buns haven’t been eating as much hay sense they had some alfalfa ( and now it is timothy) so i was wondering if this would work to get them to eat more!

i was wondering if you take some hay and maybe cut it down a little so it isn’t as long.
then you take some veggies and wash them and then dry them then cut them into little pieces, and then mix the hay and veggies all together in a bowel or something then give it to them. do you think that would work? because last night when i gave them there veggies and put there lettuce in a pile of hay and i noticed when they picked the lettuce up the got some hay with it. ( i threw away that hay because the lettuce was wet after and i didn’t want it to get moldy) so what do you think?

oh the reason i would dry the veggies is so then the hay wont get as wet. but then i am thinking i might need to give them plain wet veggies so they can get water from it.

Try and trick them huh :~)

What you might try is to just leave the hay the same length and maybe put the greens on top of that and they may accidentally eat the hay with the greens. I don’t think you need to cut up the hay. I don’t think it will hurt.

a hay salad will work but make it with something less wet, such as grated carrot. I wouldn’t spoil your rabbits too much, though, because it can start a habit in them of only wanting their hay that way. If they are healthy they should eat their hay plain. Don’t cause yourself more and more work. Is it possible that they haven’t eaten as much hay lately because they have been getting more veggies from your garden? They should snap back to appreciating their timothy hay, but observe them.

Oxbow sells botanical hay with added herbs, etc.  Kaytee sells have with added carrot, marigold or mint (not sure on flavors).  So you could certainly make your own batch of “special hay” for your bunnies.  But the amount of veggies to be fed daily does not translate well for the amount you would need to mix in.  Plus the moisture is very benefical for the bunnies.

But making an herb blend hay could increase their hay consumption as they will forage thru it looking for the goodies first- and it should certainly eliminate any boredom by causing them to look/forage for their prime bits to eat.

I no longer use bowls for my bunnies- I dump their pellets and veggies right onto their blankets.  They can certainly move around to eat if they scatter around a bit.  Plus it takes them a bit longer- and also helps eliminate boredom.
