When I purchased Chai, I was informed that she was litter box trained. She at first would use it but she would have the occasional accident. I thought this was due to being in a new environment and that she may have been uncomfortable and was tying to claim her entire cage as her own. Since then her litter box habits have gotten worse, even though I continue to focus on training her. Im assuming that she is probably coming into puberty. Though her potty habits are a concern, the main head scratcher is that in the last four days she has begun to dig out her entire litter box and spread it all over her cage. Every night I clean the mess up and start a fresh litter box with three marbles added. I cannot figure what she is thinking and she does it with tons of vigor. I have provided her with a “Diggy box” that has shredded newspapers and treats mixed in; but she has no interest what so ever in it.

Anyone know what the Diggy 500 is about or does any bunny wish to have a race???

Females do have a strong instinct to dig. So it could well be her hormones coming into play. What age is she?

She could also be “telling” you there’s something she doesn’t like regarding her litterbox. For example, it’s too small, too clean, too dirty, she doesn’t like the litter…. It can be various things. So you may need to experiment here. To prevent her digging it out you could try a cake cooling rack overr the litter with hay on top. Hopefully then she’ll dig at her diggy box instead.

Her age is approximately 3 months. The litter I am using is Yesterdays News.
            Thanks for the response jerseygirl.

What kind of litter box is she using? One of those corner ones, or a cat sized box?

I say this is quite normal behavior. Some rabbits like digging more than others and digging is closely related to pottying. Rabbits love to dig where they potty. I suggest a screened litterbox such as the one from the BB store, with hay on top of the screen.

The litterbox is a large (meant for multiple pets) corner tub.
                  Thanks for the responses.

I know alot of bunnies like the large cat boxes. Mine adore them, and I couldn’t imagine having a corner box for them. It’s too easy to dig out of in my opinion

I would also try a large rectangular cat box or a large dishpan (you can get them at the dollar store for… a dollar! LOL!)

So if she’s 3 months, I’m assuming she has not been spayed, so it’s very possible she is entering the hormonal teenage bunny stage. This is not uncommon behavior. Eight week old bunnies sometimes do pick up on the litterbox right away, causing people to think, “That was easy, my bunny is so smart!” but those habits can be short-lived as hormones take over only a month or two later. So if that is the case, it’ll just be a matter of dealing with the behavior and keeping her area clean the best you can until she’s old enough to be altered.

I have two guys who dig in the litter box when it needs cleaning LOL
I would wait a few weeks and see if it’s a hormonal thing, maybe get a bit bigger of a box and see how that works.

Another thought besides a screened box is the covered cat boxes, if you can fit one in your habitat. You’d lose more litter than screened, I imagine, but maybe have easier access to one as most petstores carry those vs having to wait for a mail order screen. Depends how annoyed you are at having to clean up – I think those screens look nice.

Also if she’s into the litter maybe try something with that texture in the diggy box instead? Maybe the paper shreds aren’t heavy enough to be satisfying.  I just gave my bun a diggy box and he snubbed it too, so I’m trying a variety of fillings to see if I can entice him.

Eddie digs in their box.  He always has to make a potty spot.  But I swear once it needs changed, he starts digging more.  He sometimes flings it everywhere.  I’d like to say it’s along the lines of a boy playing in a mud puddle, but he’s probably just mad cause he can’t find a clean potty spot.  LOL   It’s so funny too cause he sometimes takes forever to finally go cause he has to dig and pat and dig and pat…..Lolli just hops in and goes and leaves.  haha

Litterbox digging is so frustrating… it makes such a mess! Oliver used to dig in his box before we switched his litter to Feline Pine; there must have been something about the old stuff he didn’t like. Maybe you should try using another litter? How dirty is the box? Oliver won’t use his if it’s too full, even though I’ve heard that some bunnies like their boxes messy because it retains their scent better. Complicated little critters.

Today on my way home from work I purchased a pet carrier since it was cheaper then a cat covered litter box and I also purchased cardboard bedding material. I put it together as a litter box and left the door off. While the top of the carrier was off, I also jammed in a large piece of wood to create a partial wall at the door. I cleaned out the main cage again and placed the new litter box in. As soon as the cage was closed, Chai went into the carrier. I was super excited that she was comfortable going in the carrier and spending a large amount of time in there.

Then I went to make dinner…

                                and what do I hear….???

                                Diggy Dig Dig Diggy Dig!!!

I came back down to her cage and the block was over at the other end of the cage (how she got it out, I have no clue) and all the material was out of the carrier. AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

There was Chai standing up on her back legs bopping up and down as if to say “See Mom! Isin’t this great! It’s so much fun!!! Come play! Come play!”

As I type this, she is sitting on my shoulder bopping her head up and down again as if to say “Yep! I did! I did”.

She is so cute but so stupid. How can I be mad at her?

Sitting on your shoulder? how sweet!

Aw, she’s not stupid. She’s just being a rabbit.

My Bumblebee started digging a lot at that age as well. She ruined my bedding. She started around 3-4 months, now she is spayed the digging has calmed down but now she keeps peeing on my pillows. We win some and lose some here. I recently bought a bunch of small wicker baskets and have been introducing them with hay and a few raisins in them and hiding veggies in my room to keep her busy during the day. I don’t know I was trying anything to get her interested in other things than digging in my bed.

                                      LOL… too cute.
My Ani does the head-bob thing too! So i can totally picture that LOL.

Some of my digging boxes have been just cardboard ones so ocne they are destroyed i can chuck them out. I put shavings in them, sometimnes with some litter.
