So, you may have seen the post about Lily mounting again, so I have been keeping a real close eye on him! He hasn’t mounted anything lately, actually after the day I posted that! But what I have noticed is a bald patch on his back side! He doesn’t let us pick him up or anything but pet his head so it’s difficult to check him out & I am covered in scratches right now! Once I saw the patch, while he was eating his mornin salad, I right away picked him up & checked him all over! That is the only bald patch, but I did see a flea on him!
I right away braught him into the tub! I wet his head, then started washing him, but with just water! Then I sprayed him with peppermint oil & eucalyptus oil in a bit of water! Oh he is soooo MAD at me, but it needed to be done! I am getting some perma guard & dusting the whole house & him with it! But I was wondering, cause Boo’s has advantage on him, what can I use on Lily? I had called the vet’s and they said nothing is safe for bunnies, so I am waiting til my cousin gets back to me (she’s a vet tech & has a bunny), but maybe i can get a faster response on here?! Poor Lily! I feel so bad for him! Any suggestions PLEASE?!
Is there a good shampoo? Or stuff from the vet? I really just want to help him!
Use can use Advantage or Revolution. I use Revolution. Never ever Frontline though.
We can use Advantage? So happy I have some, but I’d only use 1 drop instead of the whole tube! It’s for a ten pound cat! LOL! Thank you!
I am trying to find pictures of skin mites, fleas, ring worm etc. just to see if Lily could have more than just fleas. would you know if advantage would help with the rest too?
See if your cousin can properly dose it for you. As far as I know it only helps with fleas. Revolution helps with fleas and mites.
Ringworm requires a totally different medication.
Obviously if you feel it’s something like fleas or mites, you will want to have the vet check.
I would NOT dust the perma-guard (diatomaceous earth) ON the bunny!!! Rabbits have sensitive lungs/respiratory tracts to begin with and I’d be very hesitant to increase the dust in their environment, especially with something risky like DE, since it’s a lot easier for their tiny, low-to-the-ground bodies to breathe it in relative to dogs and cats. Also, the “pet” formulation of Perma-Guard contains pyrethrin insecticides, according to the label online… while OK in low doses, I’d be really hesitant to use it around rabbits, especially with that risk of breathing it in.
Stick with the pharmaceutical solution- Advantage (imidacloprid) and Revolution (selamectin) are OK, but you definitely want to check with a vet about the dosage. When using these products you also DON’T have to treat the environment unless the infestation is especially severe- the stuff on the animal kills all life stages and breaks the life cycle, so they will steadily die off in the environment without a usable host (humans are not hosts thankfully, but all dogs/cats/bunnies/things with fur in the house need a topical treatment to fully break the cycle) That’s why they’re the greatest thing since sliced bread
Pictures of mites etc. may or may not help, as you need a microscope to see a lot of skin bugs. I would have a vet take a peek at it one way or another, just to choose the right product for treatment and to get the right dosage. Hair loss can be due to scratching from fleas but there are many other things that can cause that as well.
For the Advantage to be effective you need to dose the correct amount- check with your vet or your cousin for the correct dose. Revolution and Advantage (MUST be Advantage- not Advantix, etc) are safe for bunnies. But since you bathed the bunny you will have to wait a couple of days in order to apply the topical flea product- since it uses the oil in the skin and haircoat to disperse over the body.
I would check into your flea treatment for the house to make sure it is safe for bunnies- many flea products are toxic to rabbits.
I can see why your bunny might be mad if you sprayed him with essential oils- they are strongly scented and could be irritating to the bunny’s skin or eyes and there is no way for the bunny to get away from it if it is coating the fur- and the bunny will most likely end up ingesting some when grooming. ![]()
So I applied the advantage last night! & reapplied it to Boo’s! Yes, Lily was mad about the essential oils, but they were really diluted, like 5 drops in an ounce of water, just to try to repel fleas til I found something to use! Well, the essential oils didn’t work, when I got home I saw alot of fleas on him & Boo’s too! I checked his bald spot out, there was no flaking or scabs, but little black flecks! This morning, he was alot better, Boo’s too! I did alot of research on advantage before I applied it, since I couldn’t get a direct answer from the vet’s office. & the facts on advantage were really good! I put about half a vile on him & the other half on Boo’s, it’s only been about 1/2 a month since Boo’s was treated, so just to get him to spread more around the house, I used anouther half on him! I had never know that you can reaply it weekly if needed to spread it around the house! Well, I am still going to bring Lily in to see the vet, but just couldn’t let her get eatin alive til then! & When I called the vet, I asked his weight from his last weigh in & he had weighed 4lbs, he has grown alot since then, but not quite 9lbs, so I knew half was fine for him!
I know I should have waited to apply the advantage, but the bath was just water, no shampoo! I didn’t want to use a shampoo til I knew if it was safe for Lily!
Usually its the kitten dosage you’d use on a bunny, full cat size is often too much. And plain water baths still take off too much of the natural oils… it really is best to wait the couple of days.
I wish I could have waited, but there were so many fleas on him that all he was doing was scratching himself & this way he can spread it around the house with Boo’s! I couldn’t sit there for 2 days watching all of those fleas eating Lily to death & him scratch himself! I think I did the right thing & he is going to the vets on Monday to get checked out! I used 1/2 Boo’s dose! Lily’s doing alot better now so I think it was a good idea! Poor animals, I start scratching just thinking of all those fleas!
& when I researched advantage, they used three times the recomended dose for three consecutive days & no side effects! it’s not having enough compared to having too much that is the problem! I’d never do that but that was how they tested safety on the animals!
Just make sure that you mention that you already did a dose and how much – it may not matter but better to let the vet know.\
It took a few doses of Revolution to get rid of the fleas on Pepe.
Just be careful with dosing as most of the dosing and testing is done on dogs and cats- not rabbits. I know that using it on a rabbit Is off lablel use for Revolution and I think for Advantage too. That means it is effective but has not gone thru the rigorous testing to get the label claim that it is safe for bunnies.
You should try to reduce the flea population in the environment by washing all the blankets, etc that they come into contact with and vacuuming the whole house- especially where the bunnies like to hide- including under furniture, etc and then taking the bag or canister off the vacuum and dumping it out and getting it into a trash can away from your house- so the flea eggs don’t hatch out and get back into the enviroment. It will take a few months of treatment to completely eliminate fleas from the environment due to the life cycle of the flea and the different stages it goes thru between egg and adult.
I would mention to your vet when you applies Advantage, how much and that one bunny was bathed before hand.
It is kinda odd that your vet is not at all helpful with coming up with an effective treatment plan. Just make sure that you are using Advantage and it is purchased from a reliable source (there are counterfeits on the market that could be toxic).
Thank u everyone! Lily’s doing much better, I didn’t bring him in yesterday, but have an appointment for his check up on Saturday! His fur is growing back in the bald spot & he is binking everywhere! I did talk to my cousin while I was at the vets for my parents dog & she said make an appointment just to make sure, but advantage is good for fleas! But this morning i was checking him & saw a few white flakes, so that could be from either fleas or mites, but he’s not digging/scratching anymore! But he hs an appointment to make sure of his weight & get him all checked out! It’s like I got my sweet Lily back! He lets me check him out again & pet him everywhere!
The vet doesn’t specialize in exotic pets, but he is an awesome vet! My cousin has a bunny too, so that’s why I ask her! The receptionist can’t give out information & the vet says that it hasn’t been proven/tested on rabbits! But when I bring him in, we’ll talk more about it! They are really helpful there, personally I think he’s the best vet ever! We have had not so good vets that our dogs have had to have muzels on them, but never with him, our animals like him & the vet tech’s!
